2014 MILLERSVILLE FOOTBALL SEASON OUTLOOK Greg Breitbach’s first offseason at Millersville was all about building toughness and competition. After stepping onto campus one day before spring workouts in 2013 and enduring the 1-10 record that followed, Breitbach began to establish his vision for the Maraud- er football program. Throughout the offseason, players were pushed harder and further than they ever had been as Marauders. The coaching staff, meanwhile, hit the homes and high schools of potential recruits effi- ciently and diligently. What resulted was a bigger, faster, stronger and more confident set of returners and an incoming class of recruits that will improve the size and speed ratio of the Marauders immediately. “In our winter conditioning, our motto was toughness,” said Bre- itbach. “Are we tough enough to get up and get there on time at 5:30 a.m.? Are we tough enough to finish a drill when we are tired? Are we tough enough to be coachable when we are tired and it isn’t conve- nient and isn’t easy? It wasn’t as much about physical toughness as it was about resolve and mental toughness and the ability to bounce back when things aren’t going your way.” Breitbach was disheartened by the lack of this characteristic in 2013 when the Marauders were outscored by an average of 45.1 to 10.9. The Marauders scored more than 16 points in just one game (the 30-12 win over Cheyney) and gave up 45 or more points eight times. Compounding it all was an astounding 32 fumbles (15 lost) and 17 interceptions thrown. Millersville did play one of the most difficult schedules in Divi- sion II. Its 10 losses came against teams with a combined record of 67-37 and its three PSAC West opponents finished second, third and fourth in the standings. Still, the Marauders let games get away. No game exemplified this more than the match-up against California in the season finale. The Marauders trailed 24-14 with 10:42 left in the third quarter. The defense proceeded to return a fumble deep into California territory, but a missed chip-shot field goal was followed by another missed opportunity after a blocked punt. Then the wheels came off.
