INTRO SOAP When you have your daily time with God, use SOAP to help you think through what you are reading. SOAP Pick a book of the and read 1-2 chapters a day. Each day, write out Scripture the Bible verse that stood out the most to you.

What is God saying in this verse? What truth did you learn? Observation Write down your observations, thoughts, or questions.

How can you apply what you learned? What truths do you need to believe? Application Write down a practical way you can apply this truth

Respond to God in prayer. Write down a short prayer thanking God for this truth Prayer and ask Him to help you apply it in your life.

Example Of SOAP

John 15:5 - “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it Scripture is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

We don’t naturally abide in so He commands us to abide. Following this command is not burdensome, but actually for our benefit. If we’re not connected to Jesus, we can’t do Observation anything. Jesus is the true vine and if we abide in Him we will bear fruit. The fruit we bear brings glory to God.

What are ways I can abide in Jesus? Jesus says I will abide in Him if I keep His commandments, Application but am I actually doing that? Abiding in Jesus allows me to experience the joy that Jesus has for me. I can continue to abide in Him through regularly reading the Bible and prayer.

Jesus, thank You for saving me! Please always remind me of how amazing Your is. I confess that most of the time I would rather do my own thing than abide in You. Teach me Prayer more about what it means to abide in You and I pray that abiding in You would result in great fruit for Your glory! We will be using the acronym SOAP to guide us along and help us unearth some of the truths found within the first INTRO couple chapters of Luke. We will highlight the different parts of our study guide with the corresponding SOAP letters. This will give us a feel for what we are doing. The process of “SOAPing” will also provide an easy way of sharing A STUDY what you’re learning through the Word with those you do life with.

OF LUKE We pray that each of us would know the truth of God’s Word, love Him more deeply, and live for Him more fully! 1:26-56 & 2:1-20 CONTEXT Luke is a historical narrative, which simply means, it’s a book written to tell a story or account of historical facts. Specifically in Luke’s gospel we see a theme of Christ, the Son of Man. Throughout the book are many events that display Christ’s humanity.

It was written by Luke, who also wrote the book of Acts. We see in the opening of the book that Luke is writing to , to whom he had also addressed the book of Acts. As a doctor, and one of the Apostle Paul’s traveling companions later, Luke offers a rather detailed account of the time around the life and death of Jesus.

Within the book we see prophecies fulfilled in the birth of and Jesus, details of Jesus’ life and ministry, events leading up to the death and , and accounts of witnesses to the resurrected Savior. As in the rest of God’s Word, we see in the book of Luke God’s faithfulness and provision to those who believe. DAY 1 Scripture Read Luke chapter 2. :21-52

Let’s spend a few minutes getting a little context for the passage, Luke 2:21-52.

Who is introduced in the second half of chapter 2? What do you learn about them?

Even though there are a couple different timeframes referenced in our passage, they happened in the same location. Where is it?

Now that we have our initial observation out of the way, let’s look a little more.

Leviticus 12:2-8 gives details of the Law of referenced in this passage. By it we learn that verse 21 and 22 don’t happen on the same day. Note any other details you find in Luke 2:21-39 about the Law. Observation As held Jesus and praised God, what do you learn about who Jesus is?

Who moved Simeon to go to the temple courts? Why might this be significant?

What is characteristic about Simeon and Anna’s relationship with God?

Scripture Read Luke 3:1-6, Isaiah 40:1-5 DAY 2 John was also prophesied about in the book of Isaiah!

LUKE 3:1-6 This scripture was spoken as a comfort to God’s people following a prophecy that Babylon would invade and take the people from their home because of their sin.

Who was coming in verse 3? Who would see God’s salvation? Why might this be significant for Luke’s audience to hear? Whose word was the fulfillment of this prophecy Observation dependent upon?

Luke opens this chapter by listing 5 different Roman officials with titles. These careful details help to show that this is a true story that actually happened. Knowing this, how does the identity of Jesus portrayed in Luke change your perspective?

How might this connect back to Luke’s purpose as an author in Luke 1:1-4?

Read Luke 3:21-37, Matthew 1:1-17 A genealogy is a record of a familial line. Luke contains one of the two genealogies of Jesus DAY 4 in the Bible and Matthew contains the other. Both genealogies are complete and accurate, Scripture however, they each highlight different details in connection to Matthew and Luke’s purpose LUKE 3:21-37 as authors. Luke was a Gentile writer writing to a predominantly Gentile audience. Matthew was a Jewish author writing to a predominantly Jewish audience.

How does Simon respond to the catch he brings in after Jesus encourages him to let down Observation his nets? Why does he respond this way?

LUKE 5:12-16 How does the leper approach Jesus?

How might this reflect Peter’s encounter with Jesus earlier in verse 8 following the Observation ?

The leper was healed far beyond his physical ailments. What was the significance of Jesus telling the man to go show himself to the priests in verse 14? See Leviticus 14:2-32.
