RELEASE NUMBER 8 (October 27, 2009) FSN (Regional) | KOA-RADIO | CUBUFFS.COM (Live Stats) QUICKLY SPEAKING… The Colorado Buffaloes (2-5, 1-2 Big 12) return to Boulder this week for their annual Homecoming game, hosting the Missouri Tigers (4-3, 0-3 Big 12) in an 11:40 a.m. MDT kickoff at Folsom Field (53,750) … The game will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Net, with Bill Land (play-by-play), Gary Reasons (analysis) and Emily Jones (sideline reporter) to call the action … Since the start of the 2001 season, Colorado is 16-5 at home versus Big 12 North teams (4-0 vs. ISU; 4-1 vs. KU; 3-1 vs. KSU; 3-1 vs. MU; 2-2 vs. NU) …This will be just the third day game this year for the Buffaloes (Wyoming, Kansas State); the other five have kicked off between 5 and 9 p.m. local time) … The Buffaloes are coming off a 20-6 loss at Kansas State, just the 45th time in the last 299 games (dating to 1985) that CU didn’t score at least 14 points (CU is 3-42 in those games) … CU is 1-0 against Missouri in Halloween Homecoming games, rallying from 20-6 down early in the fourth quarter to win, 21-20, in 1959 … The CU-Texas A&M game was picked up by Fox College Sports for regional broadcast (11:30 a.m. mountain start); CU will now have a minimum 11 games televised this year (eight national/three regional; the Iowa State game is still possible) … About 9,000 seats remain for the Missouri game, the same number of which are left for the Nov. 7 Texas A&M contest …Visit CUBuffs.com/gameday as your one stop for everything, including live stats for all games. DEPTH CHART ON PAGE 54; ROSTER ON PAGES 55-56 Cu on track to start fewest upperclassmen in recent memory Thus far, upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) have started just 54.5 percent of CU’s seven games; the lowest figure in the last 26 years is 58.3 percent in 2003, as precise information is available back to 1999 and rough data eye-balled back to 1984. Of the 154 starts through seven games, 32 have been by seniors, 52 by juniors, 54 by sophomores and 16 by freshmen (14 redshirt/2 true). STAT OF THE WEEK Colorado continues to stifle the opponent on third down, as the enemy is converting at just 32.7 percent on the year (32-of-98); within those numbers are 12-of-49 (24.5%) at Folsom Field; 1-of-13 (7.7%) on third downs inside the Buff 20; and 9-of-16 on 3rd-&-2 or less and 17-of-34 on 3rd-&-4 or less, not distances teams only click around 50 percent. There is still a feast or famine factor, as opponents have gained 491 yards on its’ 32 makes (15.3 per), but have gained a net 0 on the 66 misses (0.0). Colorado is 19th in the nation in third down defense; ahead of the Buffs are five of the seven remaining undefeated teams (all combine to be 96-36), with just two also owning a sub-.500 record (Bowling Green, 16th; Virginia, 17th) and a third at .500 (Air Force, 5th); at 2-5, CU has the worst mark currently in a stat that is one of those that usually reflects success. OBSCURE NOTES OF THE WEEK Colorado is currently averaging 4.0 yards on first down (which stands to be its lowest figure since 1979, when it averaged 3.5 per first down play). The Buffs are gaining more on the average on all other downs: 4.3 on second, 4.2 on third and 6.4 on fourth (just 14 plays). The last time that happened was in 1992, when CU earned 4.4 yards on first down, followed by 6.2 (second), 6.4 (third) and 8.8 (fourth). The Buffs were 9-1-1 that regular season. The Buffs are on schedule to record the most single season quarterback sacks in the Dan Hawkins Era; CU has 19 for 150 yards in losses (7.9 per) through seven games, with that average noticeably higher. In 2008, the Buffs had 26 sacks for 175 yards (6.7 per), with 19-for-130 (6.8) in 2007 and 25- for-172 in 2006 (6.9).     Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league.     Famed CU coach Eddie Crowder dies Page 1 of 3 Famed CU coach Eddie Crowder dies By Neill Woelk Wednesday, September 10, 2008 Eddie Crowder, the man who took Colorado’s football program to national prominence as a coach and set the stage for one of the school’s most successful eras as its athletic director, died Tuesday of complications from leukemia. He was 77. Crowder leaves an unmatched legacy at CU. No other man has had more of an influence on Colorado’s athletic department, with that influence spanning more than four decades. As the football coach for 11 years, Crowder led CU to a No. 3 finish in the nation in 1971, five bowl games and a 67-49-2 record, including CU’s first 10-win season in 1971. As CU’s athletic director for 20 years, he took Colorado into the era of big-time college athletics. He also recovered from what he would later call his “biggest mistake” — the hiring of Chuck Fairbanks as the Buffs’ football coach — to set the stage for what would become a golden era of CU athletics. “Eddie Crowder held Colorado athletics together,” said former Big Eight commissioner Chuck Neinas. “Let’s be candid — Colorado has never had the resources of an Oklahoma or Nebraska. “But in large part, they’ve been able to compete with those schools on a fairly regular basis because of the efforts of a guy like Eddie.” Crowder’s influence is still being felt at CU. Two of his final hires were football coach Bill McCartney and women’s basketball coach Ceal Barry, both of whom led the Buffs to unprecedented national prominence.
