The Unitarian Chapel, St Saviourgate When? Saturday, 24th September 2016 From Georgian Northern Europe to a Post-Second World War period and beyond, with a Yorkshire connection. Pianist Jo Peach at the grand piano in Original Piano Music by Composer the Unitarian Chapel Organists. Such was the sharply focussed and well-defining title of the YDOA's September event held last Saturday in the Unitarian Church on St Saviourgate. The Unitarian church makes an ideal and intimate venue; and coupled with their forward looking investment in the new 'Yamaha' Grand Piano, it both looks and sounds the part as well! Throughout the various venues within city of York, this venue really does stand apart as it gives a rare opportunity See, listen and hear at close quarters the clarity of both the instrument and the music in a most clear manner. Jo Peach performed a most interesting programme of pieces within the clearly defined remit of the title, demonstrating both representative pieces of music composed in varied contrasting styles alongside her undoubtedly superb pianistic skills. The journey commenced in the Classical era of Samuel Wesley and Matthew Camidge, progressing through the Romantic and Late Romantic eras with Guilmant, Stanford, Woolstanholme and Elgar. Music composed in the early 20th century made for most interesting comparisons where the harmonic language clearly showed which direction the composer was looking - ahead, or over the shoulder. (Jongen 1902 / Vierne 1916) and (Stanford 1921 / Messien 1928 / from left to right: John Scott Whiteley, Jo Peach, Elgar 1932). An experience of some Joan Johnson and Philip Moore - 4 - YDOA PipeLine October 2016 delightful musical moments. That these last three works overlapped within eleven years gave me serious food for thought. I had not thought of that era being such a musically turbulent time - but indeed it was. More recent composers included Jo's tribute to Francis, a youthful work from Paul Trepte, Bernard Littlefair, Naji Hakim, plus Philip Moore and John Scott Whiteley (who were both with us in person). The latter pieces of the programme utilised the compositional technique by which letters of a name were embedded within the melody or texture. Jo drew our attention to these 'hidden' words and explained how this is achieved with the musical scale containing only the letters A to G. We are probably all familiar with the works based on the letters B.A.C.H; well these compositions took this technique one stage further. John Scott Whiteley's composition was based on the completely different technique known as 'deconstruction'. This works by the skilled 'deconstruction' of musical material from previously composed works followed by the equally skilled 'reconstruction' to create a totally new and satisfying musical 'whole'. The original works were in this case all compositions of Benjamin Britten and it was for me at least, a completely novel experience to hear melody, harmony and accompanimental textures from familiar works regrouped and reformed into something completely new. This was a most enjoyable afternoon of varied and interesting music most excellently played and a big vote of thanks is due to Jo Peach for the recital. Text: Nigel Holdsworth Photos: Stephanie Holdsworth At this point it remains to be mentioned that both John Scott Whiteley as well as Philip Moore, composers featured in Jo Peach's programme attended the concert. The late Bernard Littlefair was represented by his daughter. Also, many thanks for all those of you who came to this concert whilst there was another, non-YDOA event with John Rutter only a few doors' from left to right: John Scott Whiteley (featured down the road in the Central composer), Jo Peach (pianist), Joan Johnson (YDOA Methodist Church!
