The Fair was inaugurated by Begum Selima Rahman. Hon’ble Minister of State of Cultural Affairs, Govt of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Publishers from, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka participated in the Fair. Seventeen Publishers from India Including Vigyan Prasar and Publications Division, Govt. of India took part in the fair. The closing ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Mr. M. Morshed Khan. Vigyan Prasar’s books were well appreciated by the visitors at the Fair. Publishers from other foreign countries showed keen interest in Vigyan Prasar’s books. It appears that there is lot of scope for promoting Vigyan Prasar’s books in SAARC countries. Popular Science Writing in 19th Century Bengal s part of its effort to document popular science writings in different Indian Alanguages, Vigyan Prasar had commissioned a project to Science Communicator’s Forum, Kolkata for popular science writings in Bengali. Earlier, a similar project for Hindi was completed by Vigyan Parishad Prayag. The period covered in Bengali was 1818 to 1860. The final project report in the form of compilation of selected articles/writings and with a detailed introduction was handed over to Vigyan Prasar by Professor Sushil K. Mukherjee, former Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and Kalyani University, at Kolkata on Prof. S.K. Mukherjee handing over the manuscript to Dr. S. Mahanti of Vigyan Prasar on Aug. 24, 2002 at Kolkata. August 24, 2002. The function was held at Loreto Day School, Sealdah, Kolkata. Also seen Dr. Amit Chakrabarty and Prof. S.S. I found it impossible to do so. The sorrow of a bereaved mother is no fit matter for discussion by strangers in the public press. But the book revealed to me such an astounding mental attitude on the part of its author, that I sent for a previous work of his, The Survival of Man, to discover on what ground he, a professor of a certain branch of physical science, and the Principal of a University, speaking with the authority conferred by his occupancy of these positions, could make the assumptions that he does, and promulgate urbi et orbi such extraordinary doctrines. I have been engaged for some forty years in the study of the vagaries of the human mind in health and in disease, and am not easily surprised by witnessing new vagaries ; but I must confess that The Survival of Man did surprise me.     Henry Handel Richardson, a Secret Life – a talk given by Dr Barbara Finlayson at the Bendigo Philosopher’s Group on July 2, 2018 The background music are songs to which Henry Handel Richardson (HHR mainly from now on) wrote the music, some whilst she was at school, others as a music student at Leipzig. That she wrote music is not well known as was her deep involvement in Spiritualism, the subject of my talk. Firstly though, I shall give a very, very, potted summary about this author Henry Handel Richardson, the nom de plume of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. She was born on the 3rd January 1870 in East Melbourne, the eldest daughter of Dr Walter Richardson and his wife Mary. The family lived in various Victorian towns, as well as Melbourne itself during HHR’s childhood and youth. These included Chiltern, Queenscliff, Koroit, and Maldon after her father’s death. Her mother took the family to Europe in 1888 to enable HHR and her sister Lill to continue her musical studies at the Leipzig Conservatorium. HHR married George Robertson who became chair at the University of London and they moved to that city 1903. She published her first novel, Maurice Guest in 1908 and that is when she adopted her pseudonym. (I have included a list of her writing in the hand out.) The best known are The Getting of Wisdom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. She died in 1946, aged 76. In Dorothy Green’s book about Henry Handel Richardson, Ulysses Bound, she said, ‘Richardson’s life-long adherence to Spiritualism is a fact which has largely been ignored.’ This book was first published in 1973, and HHR’s involvement in Spiritualism was largely ignored until 1996 when 2 events occurred.

    ARTICLE JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE: THE PHYSICIST WHO WAS FORGOTTEN D. P. SENGUPTA* This paper touches upon the exposure Jagadish Chandra had with the leaders of science in Cambridge, his joining Presidency College, Calcutta ,his initiation and researches as a physicist, before he switched over to become one of the leading Plant electro-physiologists. Contrary to popular belief, the objective of Bose was to establish experimentally Maxwell’s theory of Electromagnetic wave propagation for short waves rather than explore the commercial aspects of wireless signal transmission. A cursory glance is made at the history of electromagnetism that led to Maxwell’s Electromagnetic theory. Jagadish Chandra’s extraordinary intuition and skill in instrumentation carried out in the most primitive and ill equipped laboratory conditions, led to the production of equipment some of which is still used in modern communication. In this attempt, he turned out to be the first person to produce, transmit and receive millimeter waves that are used for much of today’s mass communication. Unknown to most, he anticipated the first semiconductor, the seed of today’s computer and electronic revolution. Caught in the transition of classical to modern Physics he decided to change track and was forgotten as a physicist that he was, only to be remembered sixty years later to have been the first one to produce millimeter waves and anticipate semiconductors. agadish Chandra Bose found himself in the right place Jagadish completed his Tripos in Natural Sciences, at the right time. He pioneered plant science, and laid the foundations of experimental science in the Indian subcontinent. He proved by experimentation that both animals and plants share much in common. He demonstrated that plants are also sensitive to heat, cold, light, noise and various other external stimuli. It is widely considered that J.C. Bose was at least 60 years ahead of his time. In 1895, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose first demonstrated in Presidency College, Calcutta, India, transmission and reception of electromagnetic waves at 60 GHz, over 23 meters distance, through two intervening walls by remotely ringing a bell and detonating gunpowder. For his communication system, Bose pioneered in development of entire millimeter-wave components like a spark-gap transmitter, coherer, dielectric lens, polarizer, horn antenna, and cylindrical diffraction grating. This is the first millimeter-wave communication system in the world, developed about 125 years ago. This is the oldest Milestone achievement from the Asian continent. Bose's experimental work on millimeter-band microwave radio was commemorated as an IEEE Milestone on 14th September 2012 and a plaque in this regard may be viewed in the main corridor of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Auditorium in the Main Building of Presidency College, Kolkata, India. IEEE celebrated the 160th anniversary of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose by reflecting on his life and works through eminent speakers compassionately projecting his work to 150 plus IEEE members and engineers on Sunday, 17th February 2019 at the landmark World Trade Center Auditorium in Bengaluru, India.

After reviewing the progress of science since the society’s foundation in 1876, Lodge promoted a model of natural science as a disinterested enterprise carried out for its own sake rather than for personal gain. This view of science as a “pure” intellectual study drew upon a tradition deriving from Ruskin’s position in a major geological controversy nearly a century before the publication of Past Years and involved Lodge’s early inspiration for physics, John Tyndall.
