Dear Parents,

Welcome back to St. Lawrence. We hope our email finds all of our families well and excited to start the new year. We have had many changes as we prepare for the new school year. We are staying current on all the Covid related issues and advisories that may affect us as a school.

We have made some changes in our building and staff. Here are some of the changes: The School Office will move back to its original place, hopefully in the next month. Music with Ms. Karam, will be temporarily using that space until the office moves, then she will be on a cart. We have moved all specials out of the back area (near the gym). That area is the new home for Preschool and Nursery School. Therefore, Preschool and Nursery School parents will park by the parish offices (behind the building) and walk their children to the Dekeyser doors.

Some staff changes are, Mrs. Baranski our IT , Mrs. Bork, middle school teacher, Mrs. Buechel, Kindergarten, and Mrs. Ampola 4th grade are not returning. We will them well. Mrs. Juhassz will be teaching 4th grade, and we will hire a new STEAM teacher. We are excited to welcome new staff members, Mrs. Lucido and Mrs. Sclafani who will be teaching Kindergarten, and Mrs. Nihem who will be teaching Preschool. Mrs. Burkhard has moved to Junior Kindergarten. We also need to hire Lunch Supervisors. Please let Mr. Barker know if you are interested.

We have been working on switching our informational system from PowerSchool to FACTS. Due to this change and the number of people in the building we have canceled Packet Pick-up. The forms that are generally turned in at Packet Pick-up will be email to you. We are hoping by this Friday, but we will send further communication when a plan is in place. All curriculum night information will be on your teacher’s website by Monday evening, except Preschool.

A few Covid related policies that have changed are that each teacher will temperature check students in their rooms. Ages 4 through 5th grade are strongly recommended to wear a mask in the classroom. Grades 6-8 are required to masks at all times. When entering the building they will proceed directly to classrooms. Doors open at 8:30 am. Also, we are allowing students to wear their tennis to school on gym days.

Meet the Teacher Day is scheduled for Monday August 24th from 9 am to 4 pm. During your time in our building, we ask that you bring all of your student’s supplies. Please have all supplies labeled with your child’s name, including their masks. You will also have an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher. If we have capability through our new communication system to email parents who your child’s homeroom teacher is, we will do that on Friday. Otherwise, we will have homeroom teacher lists posted outside the U door on Monday morning. Online families are welcome to participate in the Meet the Teacher Day as well.

The following is the schedule for Meet the Teacher Day and is based on the first letter of your last name:

A-C 9:00 am – 10:00 am D-G 10:00 am – 11:00 am H-K 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

L-N 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm O-R 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm S-T 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

U-Z 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Please remember when entering the building, social distancing will be in place as well as everyone must wear a mask.

For our latchkey students, we will have latchkey in our cafeteria starting the first day of school, at 7:00 am. Parents can enter the U door to drop students off in the morning beginning at 7:00 am. Latchkey pick up is at the Parish doors until 6:00 pm. Preschool students cannot participate in latchkey this year.

Our lunch menu has been emailed to our parents and is also on our school website. We will not offer hot lunch until after Labor Day. However, we will have milk for sale starting from the first day of school. Once our new system is in place, parents will be able to add funds to their child’s account to purchase lunch.

We will NOT have use of Utica School busses until further notice. Therefore, our drop off and pick up will look different. Please be patient. It takes a couple of weeks for parents to understand the drop off and pick up procedures. After a few weeks, the process runs smoothly. We have many students to dismiss.

DROP OFF: Parents and students MUST have on masks whenever on school grounds during drop off and pick up.

Drop Off A-G: All students last name starting with A-G will enter the back parking lot from Greely Street. Drive through the drop off line and drop your students at the Dekeyser doors.

Drop Off R-Z: If your last name starts R-Z, you will be in the same line, entering from Greely Street, however, you will proceed and drop off at the O door. The O door is behind the Knights of Columbus building.

Drop Off H-Q: If your last name starts with H-Q you will drop your child off at our U door. The U door is in the front, off of Utica rd. You will enter the parking lot at the drive way near the church and exit near the Knights of Columbus.

During this procedure, we ask that all parents remain in their cars. Please refer to the attached map for drop off directions.

Pick-up A-G: Following the same alphabet schedule A-G will enter the parking lot from Greely Street and park in the church parking lot. Teaching staff will bring students to a marked area in the church parking lot.

Pick Up H-Q: Names starting with H-Q, will pick up students at the U door and will follow our usual pick up line. Cars will enter the parking lot across Utica rd. and staff will cross cars into our parking lot at 3:45 pm. Staff will assist, please follow the map attached to this letter.

Pick Up R-Z: Names starting with letters R-Z will enter the parking lot from Greely Street and proceed to the O door in lanes. Please refer to the map.

We are looking forward to a safe and healthy 2020-2021 school year.

Dear St. Lawrence Parent,

On October 22, 1986, the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) was signed into law. The regulations provide a comprehensive scheme for schools to assess and respond to potential asbestos problems.

First, the rule required that a Local Education Agency (LEA) be inspected by an accredited inspector who visually examines the building(s) in all areas to identify the location of all asbestos containing materials. Probe Environmental Incorporation has provided this service.

The second phase is to develop an asbestos management plan. This portion of the regulation has been completed. The plan is available for examination in the principal’s office.

On May 13, 2020, a Periodic Surveillance/Inspection was conducted at the school for the condition of asbestos.

Accredited inspectors not only checked the condition of asbestos, but reassessed operation and maintenance procedures that will keep this material in good condition.

As conditions change to warrant further action, I will continue to keep the families of St. Lawrence informed regarding this important issue.

Sincerely,

Lisa DiMercurio Principal ST. LAWRENCE SCHOOL EMERGENCY CARD (NURSERY – GRADE 8)

NURSERY – 8th GRADES

Students will be using E-Learning platforms (websites/apps) for some of their classes. The E-learning platforms sometimes require that we provide the students with a login or an access code to create a login. Some of the benefits of these websites are that the students will be able to access online textbooks, participate in group projects, share ideas with their class, communicate with their teacher, access and work on assignments from any computer with internet access, and submit assignments electronically. (The more advanced of these will be used only by students in grades 4-8.) These sites are used as an extension of the classroom.

Students in grades 2-8 will receive a login for Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps for Education. This will allow them to use these products from any computer/tablet with internet access. Students in grades 6-8 will have access to email, which will be restricted to emailing within the St. Lawrence school domain unless an outside entity is specifically requested by the teacher.

We will only use approved, private, teacher-controlled learning spaces where all communication and student interaction can be closely monitored. Students will also participate in age appropriate internet safety instruction. Every effort is made to ensure the safety and support of all students.

In the interests of encouraging online safety and etiquette, students are asked to agree to the conditions outlined below:

Student Conduct

1. Students must be aware that all material used, created, etc. on any of these sits is available for school administration and teachers to view.

2. Students must treat these E-Learning platforms as an extension of the normal classroom – the same conduct expectations as outlined in the Student Handbook apply. The school values of respect, responsibility and effort also apply on our E- Learning platforms.

3. Students may not share video, photographs, contact details or any other identifying information about themselves or others while online, except in limited circumstances as guided by their teacher.

4. All comments, views and ideas expressed while online must be respectful of teachers, other students and St. Lawrence School.

5. Students must select a username that is school appropriate and does not include BOTH the student’s first and last name. (For example, names like bhewes or brianh would be acceptable, not brianhewes.)

6. Students must select an avatar, not a photograph, when creating an online identity.

7. Standard English must be used including correct punctuation and grammar – no text talk!

Students will find these websites to be valuable learning tools. They are being used to enhance engagement and learning outcomes. Please complete the attached form and return it as soon as possible to indicate that you give permission for your child to participate.

Thank you, St. Lawrence School

For your child’s safety, we require that all children be brought to the latchkey room (cafeteria). Students will be logged in by a latchkey worker. Students cannot be dropped off in the parking lot or at the exterior entrance door; they must be accompanied into the building by a parent.

All children will remain in the latchkey area until 8:45 am, at which time they will be signed out and released to their classrooms.

Afternoon latchkey is from 4:00-6:00pm. Classroom teachers will release students to the latchkey area at 4:00 pm.
