Enabling people to RISE Mahindra USA and Dealer Network Contribute More Than $100,000 to build Homes For Veterans

In late 2011, Mahindra USA (MUSA), the number one selling tractor brand in the world based on volume, pledged to donate $2 for every Mahindra product sold to Operation Finally Home - a non-profit organization that provides custom-made mortgage-free homes to wounded and disabled U.S. veterans and the widows of the fallen.

And in an early Memorial Day celebration (Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May every year commemorating U.S. men and women who died while in military service for their country), MUSA and Operation Family Home handed over the keys of their new home to combat veteran Shaun Meadows and his family.

Meadows purchased a Mahindra tractor, based on his research, to clear his land and build a family home. With the involvement of MUSA, Operation Finally Home and many others, he didn’t have to build the home on his own.

P.N. Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, provides insights

March 2012 was a momentous month for the Automotive Sector with the highest ever monthly sales (both domestic & exports) of 46919 units – a 25% growth over March 2011. For FY12, registered sales touched 483164 units – a growth of 28% over FY11. How did they do this? What were the factors that led to this achievement? ME sat down with P.N. ME: How did your team manage to achieve this milestone in the light of all the pressures on the industry (material costs, service and registration tax escalations, etc) ? PN: Synchronization and partnership! Absolutely everyone from the sales, marketing and production teams worked seamlessly together. With the focus of becoming more customer centric, it meant that we had to relook at the way our processes worked and improve them and the results were magic. We concentrated on deepening our partnerships with financers from regional rural banks (we were the first in the car market to do so), non-banking financial institutions, private and nationalized banks. We’ve opened up more showrooms across the urban and rural landscapes, which means we’ve added more financers and dealers. We also adapted to increasing demand by creating flexible capacities in our manufacturing operations – in the case of the Bolero we have multi-plant production to adapt to market demand. We’ve enhanced our reach and service and improved our quality. Additionally, communications played a big role – our online digital space on Facebook has over four million fans popularizing each of our brands. What’s more, we’ve made it a point to be more interactive with our customers and fan base. Personalized home visits by our mobile service stations and sales representatives have added that extra touch of caring, not seen before in the .

ME: Where do you see Mahindra Automotive in the next 12-24 months? PN: Staying true to Promise 2013, we are on our way to becoming a $5 billion business. We are also on our way to becoming India’s second largest commercial vehicle manufacturer. We need to be a far more technology driven company and research has to be at the heart of that vision. The creation of the Mahindra Research Valley will elevate our image and brand and take it to the Top 3 in customer satisfaction in India. FY12 has been a year of aggressive launches for M&M as well as the industry. FY13 will also be a similar year. We have announced 5 new launches for the coming year. India is gradually becoming a hot bed of new launches with many global launches by multinationals taking place first in India, even before these products are launched elsewhere. One of the most anticipated launches from Mahindra would be the SsangYong Rexton which was displayed at the Delhi Auto Expo. We aim to bring in this SUV to India along with its Compact SUV, as well as the Mahindra Reva NXR, before the festive season in October/November 2012. The Maxximo HT would be launched in the first quarter while the sub 4-metre Verito would be launched in the last quarter of FY 2012-13. All in all, we see ourselves working towards becoming a global innovator in automobile engineering and technology.

Mahindra Presence at World Meets

Sangeeta Prasad, CEO, Mahindra World City, made a presentation on ‘Urbanization - Trends, Challenges and Opportunities’ at a breakfast meeting sponsored by Nestle, at the World Economic Forum, Davos, in January 2012.

Her presentation was based on the theme ‘Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow’ and started with a childhood reminiscence - a slide on the Flintstones to tell us that we can coexist with nature. The essence of her presentation was on developing alternative cities. The meeting was attended by the Nestle Chairman, Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Dean of MIT, WPP’s Sir Martin Sorrell, HSBC’s Naina Lal Kidwai and the Nestle Global Board - all in all, a high powered gathering.

At the “Communications on Top” World Communications Forum in Davos, in February 2012, Roma Balwani, Senior VP and Group Head, Corporate Communications, made a presentation on Integrated Communications, Pros & Cons. “The sheer complexity of integrating communications for a diverse federation of businesses like the Mahindra Group and resonating with the essence of its re-branding exercise, ‘Rise’, was the challenge,” said Roma.

She explained that by integrating traditional communication tools with new age media, we cut through the clutter to communicate the ‘Rise’ philosophy to all stakeholders.

Fellow speakers included Rohit Bhargava, SVP - Global Strategies & Planning, Ogilvy, New York; Sergey Zverev, Founder & President of Russian agency, CROS PR&PA; Gianni Catalfamo, European Digital Director, Ketchum Pleon; and Paul Holmes, Founder & CEO of the Holmes Report.

S. P. Shukla, President – Group Strategy and Chief Brand Officer, represented the Mahindra Group at the First World Marketing Summit, held from March 1-3, 2012, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Talking about “Purpose-led Brand Building”, he explained how everything the Mahindra Group builds – products, services and possibilities – is purpose driven. He used the Farm Equipment Sector as an example to show how all the products and services provided – from selling tractors to comprehensive farm mechanisation solutions, to the larger space of agricultural inputs including drip irrigation – were all purpose driven.
