The program introduced here is a new engagement initiated together with The Union of Finnish Writers, Suomen Kirjailijalitto (UFW), an organization that gives support to writers from Finland. Initiated first through an introduction to UFW in 2015 by Ulla Kinnunen, the culture and communications manager of The Finnish Institute in Tokyo, a visit to Youkobo in February 2016 by Mr. Suvi Oinonen, a representative of UFW was arranged and, based on a memorandum of understanding signed with the organization, the residency program began with the hosting of three writers for one-month periods in the autumn of 2016 (September to November). The program is scheduled to continue in the spring of 2017, with the hosting of three more writers between March and May. UFW is an organization that gives multifaceted support to Finnish writers, working with a number of international residency programs to create opportunities for artists to undertake research in other countries, among which Youkobo was selected as the residency base within Asia. -

Outline for SASSI: Signs in International Media: The Image of the Journalist in Anime Rey-Lynn Little Graduate Student of Journalism B.A. Sociology and B. A. Communication Studies, Northeastern State University, 2016 University of Colorado Boulder 16 March 2020 I: Introduction A. What is anime? Well, in short it is animation--a cinematic art form. In Japan, manga and anime are a basic transmission of culture through media spanning the past three generations. Anime is either an original or more often than not adapted from a popular manga, which can be more easily understood as comic books or graphic novels. B. This medium will likely be seen by many viewers of younger generations as audiences become increasingly international and transglobal. Because of this, it feels important to examine the symbolic impact the mediated culture could have on individual and social lives. C. This presentation positions anime as relevant to current personal, historical, cultural, and political perspectives towards discerning the view of the journalist in popular culture, given the growing trend of anime media within the United States. II. Research Question-How can popular culture be used to represent journalists and their subjects, and why does this matter? A. Research on the topic of anime has often been focused on education and teaching methods but is lacking in other areas, such as journalism. B. The ultimate purpose of this research is to explore mediated messages, visual and textual, within anime through a journalistic lens. C. A housewife attempts to convince her husband to commit an infidelity, while an architect finds that his new pet companion isn’t helping him to get over his ex-girlfriend. -

Cody Poulton (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) Dr. Michael Bodden (Department of Pacific and Asian Studies) The mahō shōjo or “magical girl”, genre of Japanese animation and manga has maintained a steady, prolific presence for nearly fifty years. Magical Girl series for the most part feature a female protagonist who is between the ages of nine and fourteen - not a little girl but not yet a woman. She is either born with or bestowed upon the ability to transform into a magical alter-ego and must save the world from a clear and present enemy. The magical girl must to work to balance her “normal life” – domestic obligations, educational obligations, and interpersonal relationships – with her duty to protect the world. -

Fewer Mice: A Creative Writing Portfolio by Jesslyn Kate Gillespie A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English (Honors Associate) Presented March 3, 2016 Commencement June 2016 GILLESPIE 2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Jesslyn Gillespie for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English presented on March 3, 2016 Title: “Fewer Mice: A Creative Writing Portfolio ” . The creative writing portfolio Fewer Mice includes 53 “Liners” (comedic one-liners), four untitled prose poems, two flash-length stories (“Cleanup” and “Battle Creek”), and two short stories (“Pipes” and “Tulips”). The purpose of this portfolio was to explore the craft of writing and determine which techniques are specifically and personally beneficial to poem, flash, and short-story lengths. The method involved writing guide research [“Literature Review”], discussions with professional writers, and an extensive personal editing process. It was found that even though details and extensive dialogue seemed better suited for multiple-scene short stories, brevity, clarity, and ingenuity were helpful to all lengths of my personal writing.
