Today One of my earliest memories, growing up in the country in Donegal, was the coming of electricity. This was awaited with great excitement. With each day, the postman kept us up-to-date on “where they are now”, as the poles continued to be erected. Finally, the great day arrived – we had electricity! Gone was the Tilley lamp in the kitchen, and the Hurricane lamp in the yard. With all the excitement, it was days before I noticed something really strange, something that really baffled me. An elderly couple living nearby had not applied for the electricity, and nothing there had changed. I couldn’t understand this, because I failed to grasp the simple fact that they were free to make that decision if they chose to do so. The wires past by, within a few yards of their front door; yet, they decided to remain as they were, with their Tilley lamp and their Hurricane lamp, and in a house that had nothing of the brightness or the facilities of common comforts that all their neighbours enjoyed. It took me years to understand and to apply the message behind the simple incident. God does not give me anything, but he offers me everything. He offers me peace, but I am completely free to live in misery, and die of ulcers, if I so choose. He is constantly reminding me, offering me, calling me, inviting me ….. This Christmas is yet another opportunity to listen to his message, and to respond to it afresh. I cannot live today on a “yes” of yesterday. When I was a child, I knelt in front of the crib in the local church, with a sense of awe. The whole thing seemed so real back then. What has changed? “ Christ is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.” I have changed, of course, which is supposed to happen as my life unfolds. That sense of awe of my childhood should now be much more widespread. It should encompass life itself, the sacrament of the present moment, and my personal vocation to accept the message of Christmas, and integrate it into my daily living. The inner child of yester-year is still there, and the ability to experience a sense of awe is always possible to recapture. (MB) Clergy Appointments Immediately after Christmas Fr John Alex will be leaving us as he heads away to take up a new appointment as Parish Priest in Ilford (the Diocese of Brentwood). The General Election The Catholic Bishops’ of England and Wales have issued a statement on the forthcoming General Election. The statement concentrates on the key issues – not parties or manifestos – offering a series of points that can be put to candidates prior to voting. The Bishops highlight the duty of all citizens – not just Catholics – to help shape politics that are “rooted in the service of human rights and peace”. The innate human dignity of all – particularly the vulnerable and those on the margins – lies at the heart of the statement as the Bishops encourage everyone to “engage with the election and vote.” In making judgments about how to vote, the Bishops ask that the following are carefully considered and, indeed candidates can be asked how they will uphold:

• The innate dignity of every human being; defending both the child in the womb, the good of the mother and an understanding of the immeasurable good of a child not yet born? • The dignified care for those who are terminally ill and dying while resisting the false compassion of assisted suicide or euthanasia? • The needs of those who are frequently neglected or discarded by society such as people with disabilities, travellers, older people, those who are homeless, those in prison and those trapped in modern slavery? • The process of integration of migrants and refugees who have made their homes here, challenging the global rise of xenophobia and racism that is so radically incompatible with our faith. • The rights of those in our own communities and overseas who “can see no end to the tunnel of extreme poverty,” providing them with assistance and confronting the structural injustices that compound their suffering? • Care for our common home and tackle the climate emergency which threatens the future of our entire human family and is already having a profound impact upon the world’s poorest people. • Freedom of religion and belief, ensuring that everyone has the right to exercise their conscience and practise their creed freely without fear? • The cherishing of marriage, recognising the essential place of the family in the service of life and of society? • The right of parents to educate their children in accordance with their faith and support the work of Catholic schools in their contribution to society and their promotion of the common good? Prayers For Vocations Saturday morning in the Cathedral Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 9.15am. All welcome.

We are encouraged to discover, or deepen still more, a love for the Word of God in the Bible, so that we may strengthen our relationship with Christ, whom we meet there. This theme fits so well with our own diocesan emphasis on helping each other to encounter God’s love, so that we might become more and more personally convinced of the living relationship that Christ wants with each of us. During this Season of Advent, I pray that our engagement with the daily scriptures will help us to reflect on these three great truths: Christ has come; Christ will come again in glory; and Christ is now truly present amongst us. Let us remember the first with gratitude, look forward in hope to the coming again of Christ in glory, and try our best to respond generously to our daily encounters with Christ, truly present among us. It is the only Trappist Monastery in England and it’s also the home of Tynt Meadow Beer, an English Trappist Ale. Director Dick Hamer spent a year with the Monks, gaining privileged access to document their hidden lives. An absorbing documentary about a cloistered community who have given up everything in pursuit of an ideal. “If you are interested in deeper questions about the human experience, if you want to know what it means to give up everything in search of something, then you’ll love Outside the City.” The Handmaids of the Sacred Heart May the joy and blessings of Christmas stay with you all through the year. Many thanks to all those who have donated postage stamps during the past year. Please carry on donating.
