The Mikado — Character List

Singers of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

CHORUS/ENSEMBLE

All ages (16+) and vocal ranges are needed to portray the men and women of Titipu.

PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS

Most of the principal roles double as the characters of Gilbert, Sullivan, D’Oyly Carte and members of the D’Oyly Carte company. These historical figures appear in the prologue, and then become the characters in the operetta. Applicants for principal roles will be asked to read dialogue, which will be available at the auditions. Vocal ranges listed below use the Scientific Pitch Notation System.

W.S. Gilbert / PISH-TUSH Local official, middle management/public servant, obeys the rules and encourages others to do the same. Wants all to end well. Both participates in and records the action and rarely leaves the stage. Vocal range: F3–E5

Richard Temple / THE MIKADO Imposing and domineering. Relishes his control over everyone but doesn’t understand the consequences of his actions. Vocal range: F3–D5

Arthur Sullivan / KO-KO A simple buffoon who is trying to cope with his newly exalted position. He has been avoiding executing anyone, because he hasn't the heart to do it. Smitten with his ward, Yum-Yum. Cockney accent as Ko-Ko. Vocal range: G3–E5

Richard D’Oyly Carte / POOH-BAH Quintessential upper class Englishman (with accent to match) with a total sense of entitlement. Vocal range: G3–E flat 5

NANKI-POO Mikado’s son. A Prince in disguise but completely comfortable with the “commoners.” Head over heels in love. Vocal range: E flat 4–A5

Leonora Braham / YUM-YUM Naïve, youthful, in love with Nanki-Poo, but in a pinch will put herself first. Vocal range: E4-A5

Jessie Bond / PITTI-SING Bright, youthful, and cheeky. BFF of Yum-Yum. Vocal range: E3-F5

Sybil Grey / PEEP-BO Youthful, bit of a know-it-all and rather outspoken. “Sister” of the other two Little Maids. Vocal range: D4-D5

Rosina Brandram (the Diva) / KATISHA A lonely, mature woman who has been groomed as consort to Nanki-Poo. Pathos mixed with the usual fury. Vocal range: G sharp 3-F5
