Giants of the faith, previously unknown to me, have become my friends and mentors. I have been particularly blessed by those who endured unbelievable hardship and suffering, yet trusted their God and faithfully persevered to the end. Writing this dissertation has indeed been a family affair. From the outset, my wonderful wife, my three daughters, my two sons-in-law, and my grandchildren have faithfully backed me in prayer and provided moral support. Throughout, they constantly reminded me that I wasn’t on this journey alone; we were all in it together. Daniel Scott Ramsey Louisville, Kentucky May 2017 vii CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Status Quaestionis Although numerous authors have mentioned Benjamin Beddome1 in passing, particularly in the area of hymnology, surprisingly few scholars have done extensive research into his life, his accomplishments, and his theology. Portraits exist for a number of Beddome’s famous or even notorious contemporaries, but no one has any idea what he looked like, as there are no images of him available. Thus, despite his significant work, he has remained a rather obscure historical personality until recently. Michael A. G. Haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, has not only raised the interest and awareness of Beddome among his students, but has produced a plethora of articles and essays on Beddome’s life and works. One very informative essay on his life and ministry is entitled “Benjamin Beddome (1717–1795),” found in volume 1 of the two-volume work The British Particular Baptists 1638–1910, as well as a brief “British Particular Baptist Biography,” which serves as an introduction to the same book.2 Haykin’s biographical information is helpful and includes an excellent summary of the 1Born in 1717, Benjamin Beddome was a Particular Baptist pastor and hymn-writer, who faithfully served the Baptist congregation at Burton-on-the-Water for 55 years and provided able leadership in the Midland Baptist Association. The section “Further Reading” is most beneficial, as it includes an expanded bibliography of available authoritative sources. Haykin has kindly made several other articles available to his students, including a biographical sketch entitled “Benjamin Beddome (1717–1795) of Bourton- on-the-Water,” his written lecture “The Eighteenth-century Evangelical Revival,” his essay entitled “Signs and Wonders: Some Evangelical Perspectives from the Eighteenth Century,” an article entitled “Benjamin Beddome (1717–1795), His Life and Hymns,” which was published in Pulpit and People: Studies in Eighteenth-Century Baptist Life and Thought by John H. Y. Briggs and published by Paternoster in 2009, an essay entitled “Benjamin Beddome and the Bible,” a copy of the contents of Beddome’s personal library, which was researched in 1999, and two essays on Beddome’s Trinitarian beliefs.3 In both of the latter essays, there is a comprehensive list of sources available for further research and study. Further back, Thomas Brooks’ Pictures of the Past: The History of the Baptist Church, Bourton-on-the-Water, published in London in 1861, gives an overview of the history of Beddome’s church from 1655 to 1860. It includes a biographical sketch of Beddome’s life, some of his correspondence, as well as a few of his noteworthy hymns. There is also a “Memoir” included in a volume of sermons published in 1835 entitled Sermons Printed from the Manuscripts of the Late Rev.     Why Are We Particular Baptists? An Historical Overview INTRODUCTION: Our church is a Particular Baptist Church. That means we believe that God saves people with a particular intention, through a particular sovereign plan, and that only those particular elect people were purchased by Jesus on the cross and only they are to be immersed in water as a public profession of their faith in Jesus Christ. Since we believe that those doctrines are clearly taught in the Scriptures, why do we still refer to ourselves as Baptistic Christians? Why not merely refer to ourselves as mere Christians as the title from C.S. Lewis’ classic work suggests? Is it only to distinguish ourselves from other so-called denominations, or is there something more to it? Well, there is something more to it. The elders of our church are Baptist by conviction. That means that we believe that the Bible clearly teaches core Baptist doctrines and that the historic Baptist confessions of faith (esp. the Reformed variety) correctly represent the teaching of the Bible as far as it goes. This brings us to a brief but much needed mention about the ecumenical creeds of the Christian Church. The Ecumenical1 Creeds Before we look at the historical background of the 1646 London Confession of Faith, it is important to note that Particular Baptists are in essential agreement with the great ecumenical creeds of church history; namely, the Apostle’s Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed and the lesser known Definition of Chalcedon. Now, a mention of the word “ecumenical” in some Baptist circles can cause otherwise peaceful men to load a shell in their shotguns, point the barrel at you and scream in unison “ready, aim, fire!” This is because too many Baptists are ignorant of their own doctrinal roots.

    34 THE LONDON CALVINISTIC BAPTIST LEADERSHIP 1644 - 1660 The 1644 Confession provides the first clear example of intercongregational co-operation between the London Calvinistic Baptists. In its revised edition of 1646 it also provided the doctrinal standard for the first period of their expansion which closed with the restoration of Charles II in 1660. The two editions also introduced as signatories some of their earliest influential leaders. Since the 1596 Separatist Confession provided the source which was used virtually verbatim by the 1644 Confession for matters ecclesiological the differences between them concerning both the ministry and church-state relationships are the more noteworthy. These were areas, among others, where the London Baptist leaders first established positions which were to be important for the future. In 1596 the Separatist Confession had emphasized that every congregation of believers had power to elect, ordain and even, if necessary, to dismiss their ministers. ( 1) Further, they claimed, that Christ had instituted and ratified to continue unto the world's end only this public ordinary Ministry of Pastors, Teachers, Elders, Deacons, Helpers to the instruction, government, and service of his Church. (2) The Baptists took this over but omitted 'Helpers' in 1644 and 'Pastors' and 'Teachers' from 1646 onwards. (3) Furthermore, the men of 1644, unlike those in 1596, did not prohibit the administration of sacraments 'until the Pastors or Teachers be chosen and ordained into their office'. (4) Equally, both statements agreed that they should be prepared to practise their form of churchmanship whether the secular authorities allowed them freedom to do so or not, and that they should be prepared to suffer any consequent penalties without resistance.

Severely persecuted following the Restoration, toleration in 1689 brought its own perils. Particular Baptists were fortunate in having several strong leaders, especially the London trio of Hanserd Knollys, William Kiffin, and Benjamin Keach. Such a small and severely persecuted group as the Baptists could afford little time for academic pursuits, thus of necessity most of their theology was practical in nature. Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was the most outstanding practical theologian among the English Particular Baptists of the late seventeenth century. This dissertation is a study of Keach, in particular his writings on public worship and practical theology. Although Keach was a prolific author, he has been almost completely neglected by scholars.

    Talbot – The King James Bible and Baptists over 400 Years THE KING JAMES BIBLE AND BAPTISTS OVER 400 YEARS1 Rev Dr Brian R. Talbot Dundee, Scotland. Paper delivered at Baptist World Alliance Heritage and Identity Commission, Thursday July 7, 2011 at Kuala Lumpur (revised for publication) © The Author The King James Version was commissioned in 1604 at the Hampton Court Conference, a gathering called by the new monarch of the United Kingdom with a view to easing tensions that had existed in the Elizabethan Church of England. The new King, James I (of England & VI of Scotland), accepted a proposal for the commissioning of a new Bible translation put to him by the leading Puritan scholar at the conference, Dr John Reynolds (1549-1607), President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.2 Why did Reynolds call for a new Bible translation when the Geneva Bible was so popular amongst devout Protestant Christians? It is likely that he wished to see a replacement for the version that was most common in parish churches in England, the Bishops’ Bible. Archbishop Matthew Parker (1504-75) had asked the previous monarch, Elizabeth I, to authorise this Bible alone for reading in church since “in certain places be publicaly used some translations which have not been laboured in your Realm, having inspersed divers prejudicial notes.” He wanted “to draw to one uniformity.” This version was not a work of particularly high merit, though this was unlikely to have been the reason why the Queen declined his request, but its significance in this context is that James required it to serve as the basis of the 1611 revision of the English Bible.3 Parker, together with Edmund Grindal (1519-83), Bishop of London, made a concerted effort to restrict the supply of Geneva Bibles in order to encourage usage of the Bishops’ Bible.

This timeframe covers the significant phase of early Calvinistic Baptist emergence in society and literary output. The thesis seeks to explore the development of theological commitments regarding the nature of the church within the turbulent historical context of the time. The background to the emergence of the Calvinistic Baptists was the demise of the Anglican Church of England, the establishment by Act of Parliament of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, and the establishment of a Presbyterian Church of England. The English experiment with Presbyterianism began and ended in the years covered in this work. Ecclesiology was thus one of the most important doctrines under consideration in the phase of English history. This thesis is a contribution to understanding alternative forms of ecclesiology outside of the mainstream National Church settlement.
