WEINTZ PAPERS GUIDE This accession consists of materials collected by and research notes,of Dorothy J. Weintz concerning her grandfather, Asa Shinn Mercer (1839-1917). Materials received from Dorothy Weintz' daughter, Anne Weintz, in March 1977 have been integrated with materials from three previous accessions, the papers of Dorothy Weintz and Asa Mercer. Included in the Weintz Papers are correspondence pertaining to Asa Mercer; notes and drafts for Dorothy Weintz' projected biography of her grandfather; a collection of writings about Mercer by other authors; and an extensive series of clippings. The most important part of the accession, however, is the Asa s. Mercer subgroup, which includes Mercer's correspondence (1863-1917), most of which concerns his varied c&Feer in Wyoming afte~ leaving Washington State; a selection of his writings, some in manuscript form; and a copy of the classbook kept by Mercer in his dual role as President of and instructor in the University of Washington during its first term. A sub-subgroup documents Mercer's activity representing Wyoming as the state's Alternate Commissioner at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. DOROTHY_J,.
