© 2019 JETIR June 2019, Volume 6, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) Recent Trend in Indian Air Transport with Reference to Transport Economics and Logistic Dr Vijay Kumar Mishra, Lecturer (Applied Economics), S.J.N.P.G College, Lucknow Air transport is the most modern means of transport which is unmatched by its speed, time- saving and long- distance operation. Air transport is the fastest mode of transport which has reduced distances and converted the world into one unit. But it is also the costliest mode of transport beyond the reach of many people. It is essential for a vast country like India where distances are large and the terrain and climatic conditions so diverse. Through it one can easily reach to remote and inaccessible areas like mountains, forests, deserts etc. It is very useful during the times of war and natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, famines, epidemics, hostility and collapse of law and order. The beginning of the air transport was made in 1911 with a 10 km air mail service between Allahabad and Naini. The real progress was achieved in 1920 when some aerodromes were constructed and the Tata Sons Ltd. started operating internal air services (1922). In 1927 Civil Aviation Department was set up on the recommendation of Air Transport Council. Flying clubs were opened in Delhi, Karachi, Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1928. In 1932 Tata Airways Limited introduced air services between Karachi and Lahore. In 1932, Air India began its journey under the aegis of Tata Airlines, a division of Tata Sons Ltd. -

WEEKLY CURRENT AFFAIRS MAY 9 - MAY 15 SOURCES- THE HINDU / INDIAN EXPRESS / PIB / WORLD WIDE WEB MAY 9th ● At the invitation of the President of the European Council Mr. Charles Michel, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the India-EU Leaders’ Meeting. ● The meeting was held in a hybrid format with the participation of leaders of all the 27 EU Member States as well as the President of the European Council and the European Commission. ● The talks for Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), which began in 2007, have been deadlocked since 2013 over issues including tariffs, market access and data security status etc. ● This is the first time that the EU hosted a meeting with India in the EU+27 format. The EU+27 have met in this format only once before, with the US President in March this year. ● It is a significant political milestone and will further build on the momentum witnessed in the relationship since the 15th India-EU Summit in July 2020. The meeting was the initiative of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. ● ● During the meeting, the leaders exchanged views on three key thematic areas: i) foreign policy and security; ii) COVID-19, climate and environment; and iii) trade, connectivity and technology. ● The EU demanded that there are significant duty cuts in automobiles, tax reduction on wines, spirits etc, a strong intellectual property regime, relaxation in India's data localisation norms, protection to all its items with Geographical Indication etc. ● Indian demanded that Data secure status (important for India's IT sector); Ease norms on temporary movement of skilled workers, relaxation of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) norms etc. -

India saw the growth of airlines from the beginning of the twentieth century albeit, in the private sector, India also witnessed Nationalization followed by privatization. With a multitude of domestic and global players, aviation in India grew leaps and bounds. Many private airlines wound up on various accounts, many were born as well. The Government of India ensured that Air India and its subsidiaries which were successful till the 1970s and were losing steam on account of bureaucratic and political apathy was funding the behemoth, which turned out to be a loss-making enterprise. The world of aviation has seen plenty of Acquisitions, Mergers, Joint-ventures, Alliances, Partnerships and other business combinations as researched and studied by Prof. Benjamin Gomes-Casseres in his Remix Strategy. The Research paper is a work in progress which is focusing on the dynamics of what the TATA Sons are doing to ensure a revert back to the business that they originally founded in 1932. -

We found it a challenging task as even after more than 4 years, the merger was mostly on paper in so far as the integration of manpower was concerned. We could realise a deep sense of frustration and mistrust amongst the employees of two merged entities. -

In the de-regulated environment, the customer has many choices, if the first airline does not measure up-to the desired standards of service. The airline industry has been a pioneer in the innovative use of Information Technology (IT) (Ghobrial & Trusilov, 2005). E-commerce and IT are changing the nature of the airline business. The dramatic growth of web and self-service technologies facilitate simplified passenger travel involving e-ticketing, automated check-in, common-user self-service kiosks and other passenger, services (Shon, Chen & Chang, 2003). Growth in the air traffic in recent years is due to the spread of low cost service. -

MERGER OF THE COMPANY WITH INDIAN AIRLINES LTD. (NOW AIR INDIA LTD.) Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, vide its letter dated 25 May, 1993 conveyed its decision to merge the company with erstwhile Indian Airlines Ltd. now amalgamated with NACIL effective 27 August, 2007. Consequently, the entire shareholding of the company is being held by NACIL now AIR INDIA LTD. The company therefore is a wholly owned subsidiary of AIR INDIA LTD. During the year, the company did not undertake any flight operations as it’s operations were transferred to erstwhile NACIL now AIR INDIA LTD. As on date, the company is remaining as a “Shell” company pending completion of legal formalities related to merger. -
