Is there anyone there?“ Marguerite called out loudly. “Yes, right beside you,” I replied, trying to reassure her. People who are dying sometimes wonder whether they are still alive and with people they know. As their priest, I have heard this question a number of times during visits with terminally ill patients. But Marguerite repeated her question despite my response: She wasn’t calling to me at all, and it took me a moment to realize that. I had found Marguerite in bed, on oxygen, and far from her normal, alert self. She was one of my favorites among the congregation of the small Episcopalian church that I serve in Barrytown, New York. She proved to be the best critic of sermons I have ever met. A formidable professional, she had been a social worker in Manhattan and possessed a passion for children’s rights that did not wane with her retirement. After she passed the age of ninety, congestive heart failure gradually sapped life from her. She couldn’t travel to church any longer, but we made it a point to meet at her home late in the afternoon once or twice a month to talk politics, gardening, and religion, drink gin and tonics, and pray together. -

EARLY MODERN WORKSHOP: Jewish History Resources Volume 13: History of Emotions/Emotions in History, Fordham University, New York, August 23- 24, 2016 “When Miriam heard Rabbi Shimon ben Shetah’s words she became very scared”: Emotions in the Conception Narrative of a Judaeo-Arabic Version of Toledot Yeshu Sarit Kattan Gribetz, Fordham University Introduction In 826 C.E., Agobard, bishop of Lyon, published a treatise entitled De Judaicis superstitionibus, detailing and ridiculing the ‘superstitions’ of the Jews. Within his missive, Agobard describes the tales that the Jews tell about Jesus. The details Agobard recounts make clear that the bishop is referring to a medieval Jewish parody of the story of Jesus’ life, known as Toledot Yeshu (Life of Jesus), composed in Aramaic sometime before the second half of the eighth century and later translated into Hebrew. Agobard’s successor, Amulo, also quotes Toledot Yeshu in his theological treatise of 846, Contra Iudaeos, and the Catalan Dominican Ramón Martí cites long passages of Toledot Yeshu in Latin and Hebrew in his anti-Jewish polemic Pugio fidei in 1278. The inquisitorial dossier of a Jewish convert named Pere in the fourteenth-century Crown of Aragon recounts another version of the text along with vivid descriptions of how this story of Jesus’ life was told in the kitchen of a Jewish home in the Aragonese village of La Almunia de Doña Godina to try to re-Judaize the recent apostate. The text of Toledot Yeshu is found in a seventeenth-century prayer book from Yemen, and, in addition to Aramaic and Hebrew, manuscripts of the text are preserved in Judaeo-Arabic, Judaeo-Persian, Ladino, Yiddish, and other languages. -

The ART of Producing Responsa: Feminist Critiques of Rabbinic Law through the Lens of Assisted Reproductive Technologies Andrea Pemberton Prior to the mid-twentieth century, when assisted reproductive technologies (ART) stepped on to the medical scene, supplications and prayers to God were the primary means for religious Jewish couples to cope with the issue of infertility. However, with the advent of artificial insemination techniques, fertility hormones, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy, new medical technologies have successfully generated proactive methods for infertile individuals to have biological children of their own. Yet as these controversial technologies emerge, and prove to be of interest and use to Jewish persons, rabbis are compelled to contend with this new and challenging issue. In an effort to comply with halakha, or rabbinic law, modern rabbis have interpreted ART in various ways, putting restrictions on certain forms and implementing guidelines for their use in general. For religious Orthodox Jews, halakha is a prominent feature of everyday life that influences his or her actions and interactions in the most direct way. Because of this observance, Orthodox couples undergoing fertility treatment and utilizing ART take seriously the guidance of their rabbis, who are seen as authorities on halakha. Consequently, a potential problem that emerges from the halakhic discourse on assisted reproductive technologies is that this set of symbolically-loaded medical procedures takes place within the female body, yet is dictated by the tractates of a male-dominated religious legal system. The purpose of this paper, then, is to utilize feminist critiques of gender bias in legal systems to critically analyze Orthodox rabbinic discourse on assisted reproductive technologies. -

Latteri* Stories of Jesus have circulated among Christians since the first century of the Common Era. Such lore functioned to provide early Christians who were eager to learn about their savior with information about his conception, life, death, and resurrection. Some made it into the canonical New Testament Gospel accounts but much of it, for one reason or another, did not. Even so, versions of many of the stories remained popular among Christians throughout the centuries and continued to supplement the biblical text while addressing the concerns of story tellers and their audience. For purposes of this paper, the entirety of these extra-canonical Christian texts is referred to simply as apocrypha. Like the canonical Gospel accounts and later hagiography, or (semi) fictional accounts of saints’ lives, apocryphal stories of Jesus also offered entertainment and a type of model behavior for readers and listeners to emulate.1 * Natalie E. FLANNIGAN PATHWAY OF THE PERFECT MAN A COLLECTION OF ARTICLES PUBLISHED BY TRUTH AND TIDINGS The Pathway of the Perfect Man (1): Bethlehem Flanigan, Jim There are six places in the Gospels whose names begin with “Beth.” They are: Bethlehem, Bethabara, Bethsaida, Bethesda, Bethphage, and Bethany. The prefix “Beth” means “The House of,” and these places seem to touchingly chart the Life and Ministry of the Lord Jesus, coming into our world as He did at Bethlehem and finally leaving it from Bethany on the Mount of Olives. Between Bethlehem and Bethany lies that lovely pathway of the perfect Man. It is always a joy to those who love Him to trace that pathway, contemplating the beauties of a life which brought so much pleasure to God. Bethlehem means “The House of Bread” and to that House of Bread He came, He Who was the Bread of God (John 6:33). Bethlehem marked the beginning on earth of a life which, as John tells us, was the manifestation of a life which had been eternally with the Father (1John 1:2). Our fellowship is now with the Father as we also feast on the Bread of God. What emotions are stirred in the hearts of believers at every mention of Bethlehem. I stood one day with an aged saint in the center of Bethlehem. At the realization of where he was, the dear man gripped my arm and as tears welled in his eyes and trickled down his cheeks all he could say was, “Is this Bethlehem? Is this Bethlehem?” What memories flood the hearts of those who love the Savior! A crowded inn; a manger; swaddling clothes; a quiet maid from Nazareth with her newborn Son; a few shepherds; a multitude of angels from the heavens announcing the birth. -

John the purifier: His immersion and his death Bruce Chilton1 Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, New York Visiting Professor: University of Pretoria Abstract This article aims at arguing that John the Baptist's role in the Synoptic Gospels is both catechetical and christological. John points the way forward to believers' baptism after the manner of Jesus. John's preaching of repentance in Q is cast within the needs of Christian catechesis and addressed to hearers who are at the margins of Judaism. Likewise, the advice to relative prosperous converts in Luke 3: 10-14 is not part of the 'historical John's message. In evaluating John the Baptist one should not consider his allegedly prophetic status but the fact that he immersed people and purified them .. 1. INTRODUCTION Discussion within "the Jesus Seminar" brought me to make a suggestion which at the time seemed radical to some of my colleagues. Our point of departure in evaluating John the Baptist should not be his allegedly prophetic status (attributed to him in the Synoptic tradition), but the fact that he immersed people for the simple purpose of purification. That orientation was later developed further in several books and articles, and has been taken up most fully by Joan Taylor in her recent study of John.2 Those contributions fashion a fresh perspective on John, which in turn influences our picture of Jesus I Prof Bruce Chilton visited the University of Pretoria as research fellow of Prof Dr Andries G van Aarde. THE MARY MAGDALENE CONFERENCE – ST MARY MAGDALENE’S DAY – JULY 22-26, 2018 ND 2 CONFERENCE OF MARY MAGDALENE STUDIES ASSOCIATION On July 22nd 2018, IIPSGP will be holding the 2nd Annual Mary Magdalene Conference at the European Peace Museum in Central France. Among other things we shall explore what role she has in today’s churches, and among modern Gnostics. What does contemporary scholarship say about the actual person hiding behind the legends ? Was Mary Magdalene really a pagan from an ancient Goddess tradition who initiated and anointed Jesus as their Holy Osiris figure ? As the first person to bear witness to the risen Jesus after the resurrection, she convinced the other disciples to take seriously what she had seen. Without Mary Magdalene, perhaps no Christian church would ever have come into being. Did she then perhaps have the knowledge of real secrets of Christianity and act as its guardian ? It is for this reason that IIPSGP brought the Mary Magdalene Studies Association into being at our conference in 2017. This will be our second annual conference, and we are holding it on her Saints feast Day, July 22 (and also on July 24).
