Ortner, Chair This dissertation is about the making of the Indian fashion designer and highlights how the birth of the industry has fashioned new subjects and subjectivities. It traces constitutive shifts and tensions in the fashion industry over the last three decades, including the rise of bridal wear or couture, the appropriation of craft and resistances to it, and the return of ready-to-wear production via e-commerce. I argue that the professional identity of the fashion designer was crafted in opposition to the low-skilled darzi (tailor) and distinct from the ‘traditional’ craftsman with low cultural capital. However, while the designer’s identity was originally celebrated as modern, creative, and entrepreneurial, paradoxically, the most successful designers are those who appropriate and prioritize craft above his or her own skill. To make this argument, this dissertation engages with, and contributes to, scholarship on class and caste in India, anthropological literature on fashion and other creative industries, as well as work on kinship and family.

  • One Voice, Many Spaces: a Contemporary Female Self-Taught Musician’S Pathways Into Tamil Film Song Cover Culture in Chennai, South India
ONE VOICE, MANY SPACES: A CONTEMPORARY FEMALE SELF-TAUGHT MUSICIAN’S PATHWAYS INTO TAMIL FILM SONG COVER CULTURE IN CHENNAI, SOUTH INDIA By NINA MENEZES A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2018 © 2018 Nina Menezes To Vandana, whose life and quirky curiosity inspired this work. The voices —hers, theirs, and mine— are not my creation They are part of the paths hidden until now the paths we have been the paths we are the paths we will uncover They are all a part of her, them, and I Like every story, this one is based on a truth— hers, theirs, and mine. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to several individuals—across two continents— who were so generous with their time and support. Thanks to Vandana; without her story, music, dynamic personality, and passion to persevere I would not have uncovered the many cover spaces for Tamil film song in such a short time. I am grateful for her friendship, and the conversations we shared about music and life as we sipped on suda suda filter kapi and munched on idlis and vadas at the local Murugan Idli Kadai. Vandana’s sister, Vagu, and their extended network of self-taught musicians—Shantha, Alex, Prabhu, and Achu—shared their experiences as self-taught musicians within the cover scene. Their passion, adaptability, and self-discovery made fieldwork informative, rewarding, and above all a source of inspiration. I am thankful for their continued friendship.

In all types of commercial, academic, and popular discourse about fashion, words such as eco-friendly, green, ethical, fair, and slow -- the last being a catch-all term for all things “not fast fashion” -- are ubiquitous. These terms are meant to represent an array of ways of producing and using that are said or hoped to be sustainable. This research is primarily concerned with the social sustainability, or human development aspects, of artisan fashion, in the context of textile management. Artisan fashion is defined here as both product (such as a handwoven shawl), and as an evolving contemporary fashion system that typically employs rural artisans in the “developing world” to make products that are generally sold to urban, “developed world” consumers. Artisan fashion, which attempts to bridge old ways of producing with new ways of consuming, is positioned in this research as it has come to be viewed in the fashion marketplace: a subset of so-called slow and sustainable fashion.

  • Art in Between Empires: Visual Culture & Artistic Knowledge in Late
ART IN BETWEEN EMPIRES: VISUAL CULTURE & ARTISTIC KNOWLEDGE IN LATE MUGHAL DELHI 1748-1857 Yuthika Sharma Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Yuthika Sharma All rights reserved ABSTRACT Art in between Empires: Visual Culture & Artistic Knowledge in Late Mughal Delhi 1748 -1857 Yuthika Sharma This dissertation focuses on the artistic culture of late Mughal Delhi spanning the last century of Mughal rule and the administration of the English East India Company in North India, from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. It brings a hitherto unrecognized period of artistic accomplishment to light and studies the transformations within painting culture in the multicultural Anglo-Mughal society of Delhi. Rather than being fixated on the continuum of Mughal painting over centuries, this dissertation suggests that the art of the late Mughal period should be studied on its own terms as a response to immense socio-political and cultural changes. At its core this study is concerned with dissolving the stylistic barriers between Mughal and Company painting in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I take up the question of what the term ‘late Mughal painting’ entails and discuss how the term privileges the notion of a court centric culture of painting in an era when the Mughal court was only one of many venues of artistic expression. On the other hand, I highlight the inadequacy of the term ‘Company painting’ to address the variegated nature of works produced under East India Company patronage in this period.
