Haal Plain do get a bad rap, and sometimes quite rightly (their Pulp "Different Class" pressing is an abomination) it also seems quite the fashion to s**t on them too, regardless of whether it is deserved or not. This Mazzy Star reissue isn't so bad. Its not an Audiophile go to, but it's totally serviceable and way better than I was anticipating. For the record I believe I have the more recent pressing (white sticker on the front) that, from a QC perspective, appears to be considered a superior product than the first run they put out. If I am going to show off my system I am not going to put this on, but it isn't a dump at a 2nd hand store type of deal either. Quellik All of my pressings of the three Mazzy Star album reissues from 2009 and 2010 are all among my best sounding records. Kizshura get the new plain reissue (the one with a white sticker) they corrected some of the flaws from this pressing, it sounds really good, i haven't heard this one but the 2015 RE doesn't have much noise on it Ganthisc Good to hear it is not as noisy, but what about the volume? The 2010 repress from Plain was cut very low, which contributed to the noise floor. Dranar Plain Recordings screwed up Beth Orton too. I avoid their pressings. Milleynti I picked this up on Record Store Day April 2013 for 21.99 CAN and while I agree with many of the comments here about the quality of the pressing, I unfortunately have experienced even more disappointment with a few recent pressings...so I've heard worse, but a record this gentle and quiet deserves a better quality pressing. Granijurus I can vouch for all the negative comments on the pressing quality. Lots of surface noise through out. Agreed this is still a great album but do not buy this pressing. Kezan Boycott plain recordings. I had a handful of their releases and got rid of them. Terrible company. They are capitalizing on the vinyl trend and should go out of business, tell everyone how awful their sources and pressings are. Uttegirazu Another example of Plain's complete incompetence. Awful pressing, great album. Needs a decent repress. Golden Lama terribly noisy. listened to this once and haven't thought about going back to it since. great album however. Mazuzahn great album, deserves a proper reissue...very disappointed with this pressing AnnyMars Terrible reissue. Background noise interferes with the music. Great album though.... anneli Relieved and, at the same time, extremely disappointed to hear that the noise issue is across the board on this reissue. Mine has terrible noise issues as well!Pressings like this really do a disservice to otherwise great records. Keramar Plain Recordings SUKKS .... HALF LIGHT PRESS The Lost Album (2015) Three Imaginary Girls Earlier this summer, I haphazardly found myself observing Half Light during their CD release party that took place at The Comet Tavern in Seattle. At the time I didn’t know anything about them, but I was certainly impressed by the atmospheric and reverb-laden sound that emanated from their amplifiers. Almost two months later, I acquired a copy of their debut album, entitled Sleep More Take More Drugs Do Whatever We Want, and this disc does not disappoint. In fact, it is the best release that I have heard by a Seattle band this year. The members of Half Light are big fans of acoustic and electric based space rock such as Mojave 3, Slowdive, Mazzy Star and The Church. Impressively, they managed to convince Tim Powles, drummer of The Church, to produce this recording. His wonderful production style that weaves a hazy, shimmering cacophony suits this band perfectly as they balance the line between beautiful and chaotic. In Powles’ own words, Half Light "certainly has what many bands dream of, a sound." A unique and memorable sound collage is what they offer their listeners, and the nine songs featured on Sleep More are all one needs to be convinced of this point. Vocalist Dayna Loeffler comes across with a soft and bashful voice that has a slightly raspy quality, which sounds akin to Allison Shaw of Cranes at times. On the track "Barbs," these innate tones are augmented with a heavy reverb production effect. The guitars are also drenched in delay and generous amounts of echo, making the whole thing take on a truly drugged-out in space effect.

Traditionally, the purposefulness and relevance of a singer-songwriter were defined by something unique in their lyrical acumen, vocal skills and/or guitar or piano accompaniment. In the 1990s this paradigm was tested by the trend towards larger orchestrastion and towards electronic orchestration. In the 2000s it became harder and harder to give purpose and meaning to a body of work mostly relying on the message. Many singer-songwriters of the 2000s belonged to "Generation X" but sang and wrote for members of "Generation Y". Since "Generation Y" was inherently different from all the generations that had preceeded it, it was no surprise that the audience for these singer-songwriters declined. Since the members of "Generation X" were generally desperate to talk about themselves, it was not surprising that the number of such singer- songwriters increased. The net result was an odd disconnect between the musician and her or his target audience. The singer-songwriters of the 2000s generally sounded more "adult" because... they were.

Raw Thought: The Weblog of Aaron Swartz aaronsw.com/weblog 1 What’s Going On Here? May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.
