In this paper we aim at the most interesting case G(z)=1/Γ2(z), being the so-called double gamma function or the Barnes G-function: G(z +1)= Γ(z) G(z), z C, ∈ G(1) = G(2) = G(3) = 1,
d3 log G(z) 0, z> 0. d z3 ≥ The G-function has several equivalent forms including the Weier- strass canonical product
2 ∞ 2 z z + z (1 + γ) z k z G(z +1) =(2π) 2 exp 1+ exp z − 2 k 2k − kY=1 and the functional relationship with the Hurwitz zeta function ζ(t, z), due to Gosper [20] and Vardi [31]
(2) log G(z + 1) z log Γ(z)= ζ′( 1) ζ′( 1, z), (z) > 0, − − − − ℜ where γ denotes the Euler-Mascheroni constant and the derivative ′ d ζ (t, z) = dt ζ(t, z) is defined as an analytic continuation provided by the Hermite integral (18):
z2 z2 z ζ′( 1, z)= log z log z + − 2 − 4 − 2 (3) ∞ arctan( x ) ∞ x log(x2 + z2) 2 z z dx + dx. (z) > 0, e2πx 1 e2πx 1 ℜ Z0 − Z0 − In particular,
∞ x log x (4) ζ′( 1) = ζ′( 1, 0)=2 dx. − − e2πx 1 Z0 − For z , the G-function has the Stirling asymptotic expansion →∞ z 3z2 z2 1 1 log G(z +1)= log(2π) log A + log z + O , 2 − − 4 2 − 12 z where A is the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant given by 1 (5) log A = ζ′( 1). 12 − − CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE THEORY OF THE BARNES FUNCTION 3
Combining this definition with the representation (4), we obtain a new integral for log A:
1 + log(2π) 1 ∞ x log x (6) log A = dx. 12 − 2π2 ex 1 Z0 − The constant A originally appeared in papers by Kinkelin [23] and Glaisher [17, 18, 19] on the asymptotic expansion (when n ) of the following product → ∞
p p p 11 22 ...nn , p N. ∈ Similar to the Euler gamma function, the G-function satisfies the mul- tiplication formula [31]:
′ 2 2 2 G(n z)= eζ (−1)(1−n )nn z /2−nz+5/12 n−1 n−1 (7) n−1 i + j (2π) 2 (1−nz) G z + , n N n ∈ i=0 j=0 Y Y The Barnes function is not listed in the tables of the most well-known special functions. However, it is cited in the exercises by Whittaker and Watson [33], and in entries 6.441, 8.333 by Gradshteyn and Ryzhik [21]. Recently, Vardi [31], Quine and Choi [27], and Kumagai [24] computed the functional determinants of Laplacians of the n-sphere in terms of the Γn-function. Choi, Srivastava [13, 14] and Adamchik [3, 16] presented relationships (including integrals and series) between other mathematical functions and the multiple gamma function.
The Γn function has several interesting applications in pure and ap- plied mathematics and theoretical physics. The most intriguing one is the application of G-function to the Riemann Hypothesis. Mont- gomery [26] and Sarnak [29] (see [22] for additional references) have conjectured that the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function are pairwise distributed like eigenvalues of matrices in the Gaussian Uni- tary Ensemble (GUE) of random matrix theory. It has been shown in works by Mehta, Sarnak, Conrey, Keating, and Snaith that a closed representation for statistical averages over GUE of N N unitary ma- trices, when N can be expressed in terms of the Barnes× functions. →∞ Another interesting appearance of the G-function is in its relation to the determinants of the Hankel matrices. Consider a matrix M of the Bell numbers: 4 V.S.ADAMCHIK

det M = G(n + 1), n N. n ∈
2. Special cases of the Barnes Function For some particular arguments, the Barnes function can be expressed in terms of the known special functions and constants. The simplest (but not-trivial) special case is due to Barnes [9]:
1 1 log2 log π 3 (9) logG = + log A, 2 8 24 − 4 − 2 where A is the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant (5). The next two special cases are due to Srivastava and Choi [14]:
1 3 G 3 1 9 (10) log G = logΓ log A, 4 32 − 4π − 4 4 − 8 3 1 G log2 log π 1 (11) log G = logG + +logΓ , 4 4 2π − 8 − 4 4 where G denotes Catalan’s constant:
∞ ( 1)k G = − . (2k + 1)2 Xk=0 Identities (10) and (11) are proven by using the duplication formula 1 1 2 (7) (setting n = 2) together with (9). More special cases for z = 6 , 3 , 3 CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE THEORY OF THE BARNES FUNCTION 5
5 and 6 can be derived as well. Here is one of such formulas (see [3] for the others): Proposition 2.1. 1 1 log3 π log G = + + 3 9 72 18√3 − (12) 2 1 4 ψ(1) 1 logΓ log A 3 , 3 3 − 3 − 12√3π 2 (1) ∂ where ψ (z)= ∂z2 log Γ(z) is the polygamma function.
