YANGON, MYANMAR – Before ending his visit to Myanmar, turned to the nation’s young Catholics, urging them to pursue lives of faith, hope and love. He celebrated Mass Nov. 30 in Yangon’s Saint Mary Cathedral. Thousands of young people filled the gardens surrounding the cathedral, hoping for a close-up encounter with the pope. In his homily, Pope Francis, whose 81st birthday was less than three weeks away, said he wanted to speak to the young as a grand- father. The Bible, he told them, “asks us to think about our place in God’s plan” and to proclaim God’s love and mercy. “As messengers of this good news, you are ready to bring a word of hope to the church, to your own country, and to the wid- er world.” he said. “You are ready to bring good news to your suffer- ing brothers and sisters who need your prayers and your solidari- Pope Francis greets young people after celebrating Mass with youths Nov. 30 at St. Mary Cathedral in Yangon, Myanmar. ty, but also your enthusiasm for CNS photo/L’Osservatore Romano via Reuters. human rights, for justice and for the growth of that love and peace prayer. Lighting Advent Wreaths

raditionally, Advent wreaths are con- structed of a circle of evergreen branch- Tes into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles also can be used. The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance and preparatory sacrifices and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass. Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of re- joicing because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles sym- bolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead. n U.S. Conference of Catholic - www.usccb.org. 2 December 10, 2017 Sooner Catholic Sooner Catholic December 10, 2017 3
