GIS-based landscape analysis of megalithic graves in the Island of Sardinia (Italy) Riccardo Cicilloni 1, Marco Cabras 2 1. Department of History, Cultural Heritage and Territory, University of Cagliari. Via Is Mirrionis 1, 09123 Cagliari, Italy. Email: [email protected] 2. Ph.D. Candidate, Doctorado en Historia y Artes – Arquelogía y Cultura Material, Universidad de Granada. Via Is Mirrionis 119, 09121 Cagliari, Italy. Email: [email protected] Abstract: One of the most important megalithic groups in Western Europe in terms of number and characteristics is the group of over 200 monuments of various types in Sardinia. It now seems to be confirmed that the rise of the megalithic phenomenon was during the culture of San Michele of Ozieri (Late Neolithic, 4000-3300 B.C.E.). The Sardinian dolmen graves, however, had a maximum distribution during the Chalcolithic, as evidenced by most of the finds from excavations. The phenomenon also shows a close relationship beyond Sardinia and especially with the monuments of Catalonia, Pyrenees, non-coastal departments of French-midi, Corsica and Puglia. About 90 dolmen graves of various types have been investigated, namely the simple type, “corridor” type, “allée couverte” type, and others of uncertain attribution, located in central-western Sardinia, and particularly in a significant area of ca. 3500 km2 coinciding with the historical regions of Marghine-Planargia, Middle Valley of Tirso and Montiferru. This includes some 40% of all Sardinian dolmens. Locational trends and relationships with regard to landscape elements were studied with the aid of GIS methodologies such as viewshed and cost surface analysis.

THURSDAY MORNING, 19 MAY 2005 REGENCY E, 8:30 TO 11:35 A.M. Session 4aAA Architectural Acoustics and Noise: Preserving Acoustical Integrity in the Course of Renovation Daniel R. Raichel, Chair 2727 Moore Ln., Fort Collins, CO 80526 Chair’s Introduction—8:30 Invited Papers 8:35 4aAA1. Renovating Teatro alla Scala Milano for the 21st century, Part I. Higini Arau ͑Travesera de Dalt, 118, 08024 Barcelona, Spain, [email protected]͒ Teatro alla Scala of Milan, known simply as La Scala throughout the world, is an old but venerable opera house that achieved legendary status in the world of music. A great number of singers of Olympian status have sung there; and major operas, among them Verdi’s Falstaff and Otello and Puccini’s Turandot, premiered there. The 227-year-old theater is beloved with a passion by the Milanese and the Italians, but it has suffered the ravages of time. It needed to be renovated in order to reverse material decay, meet current fire codes and security requirements, incorporate a new HVAC system, and to accommodate badly needed modern stage machinery. This renovation project took 3 years during which the theater was closed, and it included the construction of an elliptical 17-floor fly tower, designed by architect Mario Botta, for housing rehearsal rooms and serving as a scenery changing facility. The renovation proposal originally aroused a strong sense of melodrama among the extremely excitable Italian opera buffs who feared the desecration of their beloved edifice, but the acoustics and the beauty ͑carried out by Elisabetta Fabbri Architect͒ of the auditorium were preserved ͑and even enhanced͒.

The group stayed in Inveraray and included a number of NOSAS members who enjoyed the usual well researched sites and excellent evening talks. The first site was a Neolithic chambered cairn in Crarae Gardens. This cairn was excavated in the 1950s when it was discovered to contain inhumations and cremation burials. The chamber is divided into three sections by two septal slabs with the largest section at the rear. The next site was Arichonan township which overlooks Caol Scotnish, an inlet of Loch Sween, and which was cleared in 1848 though there were still some households listed in the 1851 census. Chambered cairn Marion Ruscoe Later maps indicate some roofed buildings as late as 1898.

FOREST / TREE / MAN Museum of Ethnology, Vienna September 7, 2011 – May 28, 2012 Visitors to the exhibition are greeted by a forest of poles, 4 meters high, painted white and featuring ancestral figures of the Asmat people from South-West New Guinea. The Asmat believe that once upon a time a primeval hero, the “Windman”, carved their ancestors from a tree trunk and brought them to life with a drum. Not far from these carved mangrove poles is a huge wooden gate from a temple in Myanmar, a large oil press from Siwa Oasis in Egypt’s western desert, the costume worn by an actress playing the witch Baba Yaga, the most popular figure in Russian and Slav fairy tales, and an outsize New-Guinean slit drum carved from a tree trunk whose sound was believed to scare away enemies and frightening ghosts. In the New Hebrides these drums were stored standing up in a line to convince unwelcome „visitors“ that they are facing an impenetrable “forest”. The walls of the galleries are decorated with Maya dresses embroidered with the tree of life, a knotted Persian carpet depicting a hero – identified either as St. George or St. Theodore, or as Rostam, the hero celebrated in Iranian poetry – vanquishing a dragon, thangkas from Tibet and Nepal with sacred trees or a hermit meditating under a tree, monumental paintings depicting alpine hunting scenes from Austria, as well as charcoal drawings of lumberjacks at work in the snow on Ötscher mountain by the artist Anton Velim. Painted ritual cards from Mongolia depict frightening forest demons from the pre-Buddhist period.
