Welcome everyone, players, parents, families and friends to the 2003-2004 Presentation Day. On behalf of the Club Committee I thank you for coming.

While Presentation Days come around with some regularity it is appropriate that the efforts of the players are acknowledged. I know from talking with coaches and parents from each of the teams that they get some reward in seeing players develop and improve in application and skill. Players, on behalf of the Club, well done!

This year the Club had a slight increase in registrations. As well as a side in each age group above U12 we were able to field three U10 “Average Cricket” teams and two U11 competitive cricket sides. This is important for the future. That we were able to do this is due in large part to the active Milo “Have a Go” program that the club has been able to provide. For the last two years Peter Elliot has co- ordinated this successful activity. Peter has had to move on. Thank you, Peter, for your time in this important role.

I would like to acknowledge also those people listed at the beginning of this book – the committee, the coaches and managers. I do not take your contributions for granted and very much appreciate them. Special thanks must go in particular our secretary, Brenda McCullough; Varuna Wijeyaratne; our treasurer; Christine Allsop, for co-ordinating the uniforms and trophies; Peter Trickett, for maintaining our equipment over a number of years and Stephen Fry, our Communications Officer and who has assisted in many other ways.

In addition I would like to thank those parents who have contributed to individual teams. This has enabled their children and others to participate in the game of cricket. Apart from coaching and managing the game can be labour intensive with the need for umpires and scorers. Many thanks to those who have assisted in these roles throughout this season.

It should also be noted that for some years we have express to our local council our disappointment that the few facilities available to us are not better

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report maintained. Last year members of the Committee attended planning consultations sponsored by Hornsby Shire Council. Without wishing to be overly negative it seems that there will be little improvement to the provision of sporting facilities generally and in particular for those facilities used by our club.

My first involvement with local cricket was as a parent through the Association’s Kanga Cricket Program in 1995/6. This program was co-ordinated by Steve Brompton. Steve has maintained a continuous relationship with the Club, coaching U10, where he was joined by David Isaacs as manager, through to this years U16 team. This, his final season with the club, saw the U16 side the Junior Association’s Premiers. A great finish and an appropriate award. Steve and David, thank you for your contribution. And special congratulations to the U16 team who won in great spirit.

While the U16s were our only Grand Finalists other sides were in contention up till the final rounds, the U15s until the final day. A great achievement for this side that carried the “wooden spoon” the previous season.

This year begins a period of change for the club and for the Association as players and parents move on. The Junior Association is putting in place a new executive, including the important and key position of recorder. Epping Juniors will be also be entering a stage of rebuilding over the next twelve months. While a number of the Committee have indicated their continuing involvement with the Club additional assistance will be required for the coming years. The Milo “Have a Go” co-ordinator is one of these vital positions.

I do ask that parents not immediately involved with a specific team consider taking on some of the roles related to the administration of the club as a whole. Out meetings are short and electronic communication has reduced workloads considerably.

Finally, as in previous years special thanks must go to my wife, Rosemary, who inevitably takes on the role of unofficial registrar, for her patience over the year.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Special Awards

Senior Club Cricketer of the Year (U15-U16) – Stephen Crowcroft Stephen was the outstanding player for the Under-16 Epping District team, with an all-round contribution as batsman, bowler, fielder and sometime captain. He topped the bowling averages with his fast medium swinging deliveries, taking 13 wickets for 107 runs in 43 overs (10 maidens) at an average of 8.2. He was second in the averages, with 187 runs in 5 completed innings, at an average of 37.4. He top-scored with 57 runs in the Grand Final against Epping YMCA. Steve is the best fielder in our team: he took 6 catches, one or two miraculous, and effected some important run-outs, including one at a vital time in the Final. He was one of two captains of the team, leading with vocal but always cheerfully encouraging enthusiasm.

Intermediate Club Cricketer of the Year (U13-U14) – Joshua Green Joshua’s figures speak for themselves, his batting average was 29.63 scoring 237 runs in the 10 innings played and scoring 50 or more on three occasions with his highest score 56, he was not out twice. Joshua has a of 5.38 taking 29 wickets for 156 runs, these include 6/9, 5/1 and 6/16. Due to injury Joshua could not participate in the Rep Trails and turned his disappointment into a total focus on club cricket. Joshua is quietly confident and his enthusiasm has been infectious with in the team that he has captained leading with a “can do “attitude. Congratulations Josh!

Junior Club Cricketer of the Year (U11-U12) – Braden Cheng Braden’s batting was the backbone of the U11 Blue Team. Coming in at first drop he was almost impossible to dismiss, being not out on 4 occasions, averaging 99 and having an aggregate of 198 for the season. His highest score was 52, but having been retired regularly, could have easily gone on for more. Braden’s bowling figures were 38 overs, 3 maidens, 9 for 98. His keen fielding ability saw him take three catches. Braden also completed the season playing representative cricket.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report U10 Average Cricket Encouragement Awards U10 Blue – Jordan Viswasam During the season Jordan displayed a very enthusiastic attitude toward cricket as well as improving his cricketing skills during the year. Jordan’s enthusiasm was evident in his attendance and participation at training, attendance at all games plus a willingness to help his teammates. During the game Jordan was ever alert in the field and with both bat and ball contributed positively to the teams performance, taking 10 wickets at an average of 11.7 and scoring 81 runs at an average of 20.25. Well done Jordan.

U10 White – Evan Tuckwell Gave 100% each match. Evan was our highest run scorer with 125 runs at an average of 25 and was also our 2nd leading taker with 13 wickets. However his skills did not end here. Evan displayed a high understanding for the complexities of the game and was a natural leader on the field with his enthusiasm and motivation for his mates when they were tired or had lost interest at the end of a long hot morning.

U10 Green – Danny Surendren Danny Surendran has been an outstanding player with both bat and ball and he has continued to improve over the season. His positive attitude and good nature has made him a great asset to the U10 Green team. Danny's best batting performance was 37 runs (off 3 overs) with an average of over 14 runs per game (off 3 overs). His best bowling figures were four wickets without conceding any runs. He took a total of 19 wickets from the 15 games played, conceding only 3.7 runs for each wicket taken, on average, over the season. He has also taken some great catches in the field and contributed to a number of run-outs. He has been a fantastic player both on and off the field and well deserves recognition through the Coach's Medal.

Spirit of Cricket Award – Nicholas Esdaile (U16)

This was only Nick's second season of cricket. He attended every training session, working hard in the nets to improve his batting and bowling. He made great strides in all areas of the game. Nick would attend matches even when it was his turn not to play. He batted aggressively and with panache, and after making very few runs in his first season, he scored consistentlythis season, and contributed some valuable runs in tight games. His bowling accuracy improved and he gave away very few extras. He always fielded enthusiastically. Nick deserves this ward for his unselfish enthusiasm.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report EDCC-J Encouragement Award – Jack Dwyer (U15)

A voice to keep the spirits up in the field Jack leads by example. He enjoyed a fine season with bat and ball. Bowling 56 overs, 20 maidens, 12 wickets at less than 10. Best bowling of 4/1. His running between wickets was again a feature of his batting as was his consistency. He featured in three of the best partnership including the highest for any wicket (65 with Andrew). Three catches behind the stumps, three in the field, Jack produced yet another great all round season.

Team Reports

Season 2003 -2004

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 10 Blue

Amartya Bose: The little master of running between the wickets, Amartya (with Malinda) threw many a fielding team into disarray. He pulls the ball authoritatively, and is gradually adding strokes around the wicket. He is also a keen fielder. His bowling has been effective, with improving length and direction. He has learnt to flight the ball, is getting the occasional one to turn, and counts a hat-trick among his achievements this season. Amartya takes his cricket seriously, and it shows.

Tim Green: Quiet, competent, focused and serious, Tim is a pillar of the team and one of the top performers in all areas of the game. He practised hard to improve throughout the season, and the effort showed through. However, Tim's greatest trait is that he is a selfless team player. When every boy wants to go in first, Tim volunteers to go later, when they all want to field close in, he turns around and heads off to the boundary. His central role will become increasingly obvious as this cohort heads up through the age groups.

Malinda Gunasekera: A littl’un barely eight years old, Malinda is the quintessential copybook stylist. Foot in line, head over the ball, his batting is an absolute delight. Followers of the team may be surprised to know that Malinda was in fact the most successful bowler, having taken twelve wickets over the season, mostly with his flighted, perfect-length slow ones. Good all-rounders are rare, ones with such class should be watched very closely.

Andreas Lyndon: With little prior exposure to the game, Andreas applied himself diligently to learning the skills: patiently, one thing at a time. By end of season he is in comfortable control of his game. His bowling in particular has improved significantly. In our late game against Oakhill College he struck the vital blow taking two wickets in one over, which started our rally towards a comeback win.

Daniel Miller: A newcomer to the game, Daniel has improved through the season both in terms of skills and concentration. Bowling started out as a complete mystery and ended up as an everyday chore, batting went from a survival struggle to a few carefree slogs. Fielding too has improved, but most significant is the developing ability to integrate, concentrate and play with team spirit.

Ben Mulherin: The youngest member of the squad maintained an infectious enthusiasm and upbeat attitude throughout the season. Always ready to perform every task the coach assigned, he was willing to run to backstop or put forward a dead bat as the situation demanded. Ben is a great team player. He has another two years in the under 10s unless he graduates early, and by that time should be a force to be reckoned with.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Prachi Nagrath: Prachi worked very hard to master a new game, and made great progress through the season. She defends her wicket well which has made the difference for the team more than once, and her bowling has been increasingly on target. She is inclined to be too critical of herself. It was certainly our loss when she decided to discontinue near the end of the season.

Subhas Narayanan: Strike bowler, hard hitter of the ball and alert fieldsman, Subhash was a mainstay of the team. He punished the opposing bowlers most severely, and was one of the most economical of our bowlers. He has unbounded enthusiasm, wanting to be everything and everywhere at the same time. Subhash will clearly be an important part of the team in coming years.

Tim O’Grady: Another young player, Tim joined us in mid-season and quickly established himself as a responsible senior member of the team. His bowling skills—line, length and pace—are remarkable in such a young boy, and by end of the season he was our regular opening and closing bowler. Also an excellent fielder and technically correct with the bat, Tim is a rising star. His greatest asset is that he is serious about the game and is willing to appear so.

Vidu Perera: Clearly cut in the test cricket mould, Vidu is a firm believer that cricket is first a matter of class. Our regular opening batsman and pace bowler, his commitment is always to correct play, good form and sportsmanship. He is often too hard on himself, yet never lacks a word of encouragement for others. A great sportsman, competitior and teammate, Vidu is the cricketer's cricketer.

Pranav Rathore: While very accomplished with both bat and ball, Pranav stands out as a phenomenal fielder in every position. As our principal wicketkeeper, he took some magnificent diving catches and achieved several stumpings. In the field he turned games around with diving stops followed by direct hit runouts. His enthusiasm is unmatched. Any coach will be fortunate to have such a spirited all- rounder in the team.

Jordan Viswasam: Stylish batsman and effective pace bowler, Jordan was a consistent contributor to the team's performance. He is a mature batsman with an authoritative cover drive—rare in this age group. He is also consistent with his line and length when bowling. The team relied regularly on him, and he regularly delivered.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 10 Green

This season has been a great introduction to cricket. For all our players, it has been the first time they have played team cricket although a number have participated in the excellent ‘Milo-Cricket’ which the club organises for younger players.

The team has developed well as the season progressed. There were many new skills that the players had to learn. Initially just keeping the ball on the pitch was a challenge for many of our first-time bowlers, and running between the wickets proved difficult for many of our batsmen. However the teams skills have progressed substantially, helped along by the regular Wednesday night training which had excellent attendance throughout the whole year. There was also terrific support from many of the parents who assisted with Wednesday’s practice sessions and at the matches.

Five matches were not played at the end of 2003 due to wet weather and one ‘bye’. This made the Christmas break very long and proved a challenge for coach and manager to keep the players motivated over such an extended break from cricket. A match with parents prior to the re-commencement of the season at the end of January 2004 was very successful, as was another match with parents at the end of the season.

The captaincy of the team was rotated so each player had a turn at choosing bowlers and participating in the ‘toss’. The rules of average cricket also allowed all players to bat three overs each match and to bowl either one or two overs. All players also had an opportunity to wicketkeep and this was also regularly rotated, as were the fielding positions, giving everyone exposure to various fielding positions.

Overall the team performed very well particularly against the stronger teams. There were a number of very close matches where the games were decided in one over.

Above all, the season has been fun and will have formed the foundation for many years of cricket for a number of our players. Well done players and parents.

Jack Bewsher: Jack has made great improvement during the season particularly with his bowling and batting. He struggled to keep the ball on the wicket in the first few matches but improved immensely as the year progressed, taking five wickets in the latter matches - a great achievement. He also batted well and was the third highest scorer on average, over an innings, and hit 109 runs for the season. Well done Jack.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report David Burdis: David batted and bowled with great enthusiasm during the year. His highest score was 24 runs in 3 overs, which was the second highest of any player. He bowled fast and took 8 wickets during the season. He was also very good in the field and participated in a number of run outs. As he continues to develop accuracy in fast bowling and consistently scoring runs, he will be an excellent all-rounder in future seasons. A great season David.

Patrick Logaraj: Patrick was a quiet achiever and improved significantly in his batting, bowling and fielding throughout the season. A highlight of the season was taking 4 wickets for 7 runs in one match – an excellent achievement. He also bowled very accurately conceding only 7 runs per wicket on average over the season. He also batted well scoring a total of 71 runs over the season. A good result Pat.

Jared Lyons: Jared joined the team after the Christmas break and very quickly became a valuable member of the team. His bowling improved as each match went by, as did his batting and fielding. His best bowling figures were 1 for 8, and his highest score was 19 runs in a match. Well done Jared. Hope you continue to enjoy playing cricket.

Hamish McHenry: Hamish is a great all-rounder and batted and bowled very well throughout the season. He has a very good bowling action and took 7 seven wickets throughout the season, with his best figures being 2 for 5 in one match. He also played some excellent strokes during the season, scoring a total of 103 runs. He has great potential if he continues to apply himself, and will be a valuable member of future cricket teams. Well played Hamish.

Neil Mendonsa: Neil showed this year he has plenty of potential if he continues to apply himself to cricket as he did during the season. He had some good bowling, batting and fielding performances. His best bowling figures were 1 for 6. Hope you continue to enjoy playing cricket Neil. Well done.

Chris Mitchell: Chris put in a lot of effort to improve his bowling as the season progressed and showed excellent improvement. His best bowling figures were 1 for 4, - a great effort Chris. With the bat Chris played some excellent shots, especially his favourite sweep shot. He scored over 100 runs during the year. He finished with a average of 15 runs for each wicket lost, which was the third best in the team. He also kept wickets very well taking a number of catches behind the stumps. An excellent season Chris.

Eddie Philp: Eddie is a dynamo with the bat and ball. He joined the team after the commencement of the season when his family moved to Sydney, but this didn’t stop him making a big mark on the team. His best bowling figures were 2 for 6 and he was amongst the team’s fastest bowlers. He was also an excellent fielder, taking some great catches and using his strong throwing arm to bring some run outs. He scored an average of 13 runs per wicket which was a terrific effort. Well done Eddie.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Christopher Steffan: What a great all-rounder Chris is. He was the third highest scorer with the bat and the second best wicket taker with the ball. A terrific effort Chris. Chris has an excellent bowling arm, and continued to develop his accuracy as the year progressed, taking a total of 11 wickets for the season. His best bowling performance was 3 for 5. He also played some great shots from the crease and scored 114 runs over the season. He no doubt has great potential in future seasons. A great season Chris and all the best for the future.

Danny Surendran: Danny consistently was the team’s best bowler and batter, and also took some very difficult catches. He scored 197 runs for the season and was only out on two occasions giving him an average of 98 runs for each wicket lost, a fantastic performance. He also bowled very well taking a total of 19 wickets during the season and conceding only 70 runs, making an average of 3.7 runs per wicket. What a terrific effort. Danny will make a great all-rounder in future seasons and will no doubt be keenly sought after by next year’s teams. Well done Danny.

Alex Walton: What a great season Alex has had. He commenced the season with some excellent bowling performances taking 2 for 3 in one match. Over the whole season he took 9 wickets and averaged only 11 runs per wicket that was amongst the best performances of any of the players with the ball. He was consistently a good fielder and batted well throughout the season. His highest score was 17. A terrific effort Alex.

Shavin Wijayaratne: Shavin batted extremely well during the season. He can play a wide variety of strokes and scored over 100 runs in total. He averaged 15 runs for each wicket lost which was the third best in the team. He also bowled and fielded well. His best bowling performance was 1 for 3. Well done Shavin, you have great potential.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 10 White

Epping District u10 white had a very good introduction to the team game of cricket. As a team we played fourteen matches with a positive win/loss record of 9 wins to only 5 losses. As a team we developed our fielding and improved our running between wickets. All players had the opportunity to be captain the team and develop their leadership skills. The team would like to acknowledge the contributions of all parents who capably stepped in to contribute to the coaching, scoring, managing and umpiring. Players are also thankful for the efforts of parents who kept them going with the yummy morning teas.

Veronica Galbraith: Veronica was an enthusiastic team member, who developed her game and was consistently working to improve her skills.

Jordan Hamilton: Jordan displayed his enjoyment for the game openly. His contributions were missed on the field when he changed schools during the Christmas holidays, but his enthusiasm was still evident as he continued to come to team gatherings whenever time would permit.

Dilanjith Kulasuriya: Dilanjith showed his cricket skills with both the bat and the ball. His left arm spin bowling and his left handed batting was always a problem for opposing teams.

Matthew Nash: Matthew improved his bowling during the year, and was rewarded by taking seven wickets. Matthew’s batting also developed over the season.

Prachi Negrath: Prachi joined us late in the season and proved a worthy replacement for Rahul who moved to Melbourne at Christmas. She was especially made welcome by the other females in our team (Jessie and Veronica) who all increased in confidence, with Prachi’s presence.

Max Papworth: Max came to the team with well developed bowling skills, and continued to improve during the season. His batting is also well developed and will continue to improve as he plays more. Max was the leading wicket taker with 15 wickets and the 3rd highest run scorer with 96 runs.

Tom Tolliday: Tom is a left handed bowler and a right handed batsman. He scored 46 runs as a batsman, and was always eager to learn. He was a keen trainer and improved as the season progressed.

Evan Tuckwell: Evan was our highest run scorer and our 2nd highest wicket taker. Evan displayed a high understanding for the complexities of the game and was a natural leader on the field with his enthusiasm and motivation.

Jessie Tugwell: Jessie was a resourceful member of the team who could be relied on to take a wicket when needed. She was the 3rd highest wicket taker in the team with 9 wickets.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report William Tugwell: Will was an enthusiastic and motivated player in the field. He worked hard on his game during the season. He was always accurate with his bowling and never gave his wicket away when batting.

Nick Wakeling: Nick was the best runner between wickets on the team. He was the 4th highest run maker with the bat and his leg spin bowling was always difficult for opposing teams. Nick was an enthusiastic player who improved all parts of his game and was a leading fieldsman

John Ware: John was the 2nd highest scorer with 120 runs. He was always keen to open the batting and proved very difficult to get out for opposing teams. During the season John experimented with his bowling, sometimes bowling pace and sometimes off spin.

Matthew Wilkens: Roger became his nick name as we had 2 Matthews in our team.(Roger Wilko over and out). Roger was a very committed team member who dramatically improved both his batting and bowling in the break over the Christmas holidays. He contributed 74 with the bat and took 9 valuable wickets.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 11 Blue

Fraser Blewitt: Fraser developed great reflexes and safe hands to take two excellent catches and his much improved fielding ensured boundaries were kept to a minimum when balls were hit in his direction. Up against some strong batting teams, he bowled well being rewarded with 2 for 19 in one particular spell when playing Epping YMCA.

Braden Cheng: Braden’s batting was the backbone of the team. Coming in at first drop he was almost impossible to dismiss, being not out on 4 occasions and averaging 99 for the season - an extraordinary feat for this young cricketer who can play U11 again next year. Braden was also our first change bowler and bowled consistently throughout the season. More wickets will come if he pitches the ball up more. Braden was also one of our most enthusiastic fielders and always wanted to be “where the action is”. He took 3 catches, which supplemented his great work with the bat.

David Conlon: David’s first season playing cricket and has improved immensely over the season. His athletic ability in close saw him take two catches, both worthy of action replays. His confidence with the bat grew with practice and culminated in a wonderful season best of 24 (including four boundaries) in his last innings against the Carlingford Waratahs. One to watch in future seasons.

Mitchell Gerdes: Mitchell made a great contribution with both bat and ball through the season. He bowled with good pace and got a good haul of wickets (best 4 for 13) when his line was right. He was also a hard-hitting No. 4 who caused the opposition field to spread out when he was in full flight. His highest score was 36. His running between wickets improved out of sight during the season as did his fielding and throwing which became more controlled and strategic.

Chris Gu: Chris bowled some excellent spells during the season and took 3 wickets in all. He looked very dangerous on occasions and now has to develop consistency with the ball. His batting improved as the season progressed and he was hard to dismiss once established at the crease. Chris was always an enthusiastic fieldsman and took 3 great catches. Chris was a reliable team player who enjoyed a good season.

Matheesha Gunaratne: Matheesha had a good season and was unlucky not to make more big scores. He opened the batting and demonstrated some fluent stroke play against some excellent bowling. He often opened the bowling and snared a best 3 for 12 early in the season. He also took some very difficult catches, mostly at backward square leg, and was a capable second wicket- keeper for the side.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Kosuke Kato: Kosuke was one of our most conscientious cricketers who worked hard to improve every aspect of his game. He improved in all areas of the game, most notably his bowling. He developed a sound action and was able to snare a few wickets with good, accurate balls. His batting defence also developed and he held up an end on a number of occasions, enabling the score to push along. In the field he was alert at all times.

Dulitha Kumarasinghe: Dulitha was our first “wicky” all season and was reliable and keen at all times. His batting improved steadily throughout the season. He worked hard on eliminating his favourite shot – the “heave” to mid wicket, and replaced it with a few more elegant strokes. He was much harder to dismiss in the latter part of the season. The greatest improvement came with his bowling. In the last two games he bowled superb line and length to take 1 for 3 and 4 for 16. An excellent finish to the season for a great team player.

Ramanan Rajkumar: Ramanan showed a tremendous improvement in his bowling this season. After having difficulties with his run up early in the season he persisted at training and developed a beautiful bowling action off a very short approach. His bowling will develop further next year for sure. He batted with more confidence in the latter part of the season and should have scored more runs. Ramanan made some great stops in the field but needs to work on his catching in the off season.

Nikhil Senaratne: Nikhil put in 100% effort for the entire season. His batting technique improved considerably and he frustrated the opposition on a number of occasions with his defence. He faced some very good fast bowling when batting up the order in one innings and took a hard blow to the arm, but returned courageously at the end of the innings. His running between wickets also improved dramatically. He worked hard on his bowling, particularly his run up, which still needs some work.

Justin Small: Justin was very keen all season, and while his batting figures may not show it, he often held up one end while the runs were being made from the other. His defensive batting was improving with each game. He also put up his hand for a session of wicket keeping and proved to be very effective in that position – something to remember. Unfortunately Justin will be leaving the district and so will be missed next season.

Sean Thompson: Sean had a mixed season. He showed good promise with the bat but was out to some very good balls on a few occasions. He shows potential as a batsman as he can play the ball to both sides of the wicket. With the ball he snared 3 for 13 in one spell of accurate bowling early in the season. His fielding and catching was very good and he should develop further with another year in the U11 grade.

Tim Wareham: Tim being one of the older members of the team provided a steadying force. He gave solid performances throughout the season, and while his highest score with the bat was 36, he retired on a couple of occasions, so the possibility was much greater. His batting average was 30 and he bowled with good line and length for his 8 wickets for the season.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 11 East -Red

Our goals at the start of the season were to have fun; develop our skills and learn new ones; and to practice and play matches safely and fairly. By the end of the season, we had achieved all this and more – a successful year in many respects for a team that included a number of first-season players as well as some playing a year above their age. To these boys I want to say a job very well done. I hope you all enjoyed the season and will return to play again next year and further develop your talent.

The boys are now at an age where results begin to count. They want to win and be successful. So had did we fair in regards to results. Well our position on the table didn’t reflect the improvement we made during the year. Our form after Christmas was very good, with two wins - one against the eventual Grand Finalists, Carlingford. So the ability is certainly in the team; the boys just need to be a little more consistent both during a game and week to week. Too often a solid period of play was followed by sloppy play.

When you look at the results and averages you can see that bowling was indeed our strength. We took more wickets than any other team in the competition – an amazing achievement - with the best average of all teams – 13.07 per wicket. Conversely, our batting was our real ‘Achilles heal’ – our average being 11.11 per wicket. Seven out of 11 of the best wicket partnerships were in the two games we won and another two against the Premiers Epping YMCA - there’s a message in that for all of us!

Looking at individual batting averages, we only had four boys obtain double- figure averages. Basically, we just didn’t score enough runs to win matches. This is something to concentrate and work on in the off-season and next year. Too often we had boys attempting attacking shots to good balls. The lesson is – respect good bowling and dispatch the bad deliveries – this will see runs scored. Of course, this learning will come as the boys gain more experience and patience with the bat. Certainly an opportunity for improvement that will help the boys develop as cricketers and, in turn, the runs should flow.

The team was an absolute pleasure to coach this year, as all the boys were very keen to listen and learn. Their enthusiasm & willingness has certainly seen their skills improve remarkably. The experience gained this year will see this group develop into a very strong team or individuals in coming seasons. I appreciated the fact that they were always willing to have a go and ask questions. There were never any problems with behaviour and they formed a great team spirit.

My thanks to all parents who transported boys to games and training. They gave the team, coach and manager full support and continual encouragement, which were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Stephen Fry as Manager/Scorer and for his coaching in my absence on several Tuesday’s this year. Also my appreciation extends to our regular scorers – Chris Allsopp & Sam McCarthy, and to Paul Alice who umpired regularly for the team.

The team should be very proud of the development made this season.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report

Tim Alice: Topped the batting aggregate (102) and batting averages (20.4) this year. Tim is developing into a very stubborn opening batsman. He top scored with 43 against Carlingford and steered us to our first win. Interestingly, when Tim opened the batting and got us away to a good start, we ended up winning games….(Coach to take note for next season!) His powers of concentration and ability to steadily build an innings and not panic are great lessons for the team. Tim also took 4 wickets this year. A little more consistency with his line and length should see more wickets come his way. He certainly has ability with the ball - just needs some consistency. Overall, a great year for Tim – well done!

James Allsopp: James is a very keen cricketer & soccer player - he is an amazing boy who keeps wickets in summer and goals in winter! When he wasn’t keeping he bowled six overs and took 4 wickets - pretty good bowling & something James should continue to work on going forward. James’ batting opportunities this year were limited. However his determination to work on his technique will benefit him in the future.

Mitchell Carter: Mitch returned to competition cricket this season after years of developing his game in many backyard “Test Matches & One Day Games”. Although Mitch played fewer games than most, he developed into a very good medium pace bowler. Mitch concentrated on not trying to bowl fast, but rather ensuring his accuracy was consistent….he finished with 5 wickets from only 12 overs in the season. Mitch is also one of the better fielders in the team and his catching was generally sure and throwing very accurate and strong. Mitch will improve his batting as he develops a stronger defensive game. His ‘cameo’ down the order against Epping Blue certainly contributed greatly to a win.

Evan Danilo: Evan has learnt a lot since last season and has developed strongly this year. He has improved his batting and was unlucky in a number of instances where he fell to some ‘freak’ catches. His defence has come on this year and this compliments a very hard-hitting attacking style. Evan is a strong boy who at times bowls quickly. If he can bowl straighter and pitch the ball up more often his wicket tally will grow. Evan took 4 catches and contributed to a couple of runs outs with a strong arm in the field. Keep at it Evan - I’m very confident success will come your way.

Alex Fry: Alex has fine potential as a cricketer, especially with his batting. At times, he looks the complete batsman, playing shots all around the wicket. He is a hard hitter of the ball and, as he grows in strength and his shot selection develops, Alex will become excellent top or middle order batsman. In our last game, Alex opened our innings and was batting beautifully. He didn’t look a chance at getting out, only to hit a ‘long hop’ straight down deep square-legs ‘throat’. This summed up his season! Results will come. Patience with the bat and ball will see well-deserved rewards in runs and wickets.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Nagi Haider: This was Nagi’s first season of cricket. Nagi brings a lovely character to our team and was very popular with his teammates. The joy in his eyes and the team’s reaction to his first wicket was a high point for me this year. It is tough to come into cricket against more experienced kids at this age, but Nagi has a quiet determination to improve and stuck at his bowling & batting throughout the year. He’ll improve greatly for the experience gained this year.

James Howes: James is the ultimate team player. Bats, bowls & fields very well, but his greatest strength is his maturity and enthusiasm. After Christmas, James led the team on the field and it was no coincidence that this is when improvement in our performance was seen. James was also our leading wicket taker with 12 wickets for the season and, while he is tough on himself when he bowls the odd poor over, when he is ‘on song’ he takes wickets! James also shows ability with the bat, however, on a few occasions, was dismissed just as he seemed to be getting settled…..not a habit solely restricted to him this season. His potential with the bat can be seen through the fact that he was involved in the best partnership of the year of 47 against Epping Blue. Well done James, you contributed greatly this season in more ways than you know.

Christian Howes; Christian played above his age this year, but was certainly not out of his ability level. Christian shows good potential with bat and ball. For a younger boy to be one of only four boys in the team to average above 10 in batting is a significant achievement and augurs well for greater success in the future. Christian was involved the highest partnership for the 1st, 5th & 11th wicket, a handy player who can bat anywhere in the order and do the job for his team. In bowling, Christian took 4 wickets and will improve as he gets older and stronger and gains confidence in his ability.

Jake McCarthy: I was really impressed in the improvements Jake has made to his game this year. Jake has come on leaps and bounds, especially with his bowling. The coach wasn’t the only one to notice - a number of parents mentioned how well Jake bowled this year. Jake gave away only 1.81 runs an over, through bowling a very consistent line and length. Every time Jake bowled you knew he would be right on the spot and difficult for the opposition to score from. He certainly deserved more wickets, but sometimes, bowling tight at one end leads to wickets at the other, so be proud! Jake has also shown an improvement in his batting technique and has developed more scoring shots. I know he has worked very hard and has been frustrated that more runs didn’t come his way. In the game where he hit his top score he was involved in the highest third-wicket partnership and was unluckily run out just as he was beginning to dominate the attack. Frustrating, but all good experience that will see bigger scores next year.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Jack Philp: Jack is a very good team man & super keen to try anything – bowl spin or pace, bat anywhere in the order & keep wickets. Whilst he started the season slowly, post-Christmas saw him step up and show his ability. Jack actually reads the game very well and as he grows and gets stronger, batting scores and wickets will come his way. Jack bowled some very good overs towards the end of the year and also showed gritty determination in his batting…..a very handy trait to have in this game. Keep practising hard Jack & have confidence in your ability – perseverance is key.

Sam Richards: Sam certainly set himself a tough task this season….first year of competitive cricket and playing above his age. Given both these tough initiations, Sam should be pleased with his progress. At practice and in games Sam was very tough on himself, as many boys of this age are. He improved markedly in the second half of the season, especially with his bowling that became more accurate and consistent. Had he enjoyed a little bit of luck with skied shots, a few more wickets would have come his way. In batting, Sam can certainly hit a ball hard and will need to work hard on his defensive shots to ensure he has enough time at the crease to score runs. All round, a pleasing first season.

Sam Scott: Sam also started playing cricket this season, and is a very determined boy who was willing to listen & learn. He also showed great patience with the coach’s continual call at practice ‘to get that arm up near your ear, Sam!’ without complaint. Improvement in his batting & bowling was seen after Christmas. However school commitments kicked in and limited his opportunities. I hope Sam continues to give cricket a chance so he can further develop his natural skills and ability.

Vishan Wijeyaratne: Vishan enjoyed another good year with bat and ball. The highlight was his bowling against Berala when he took 5 for 6. Vishan is also a very tight bowler, giving away just 1.4 runs an over. With the bat, Vishan averaged 13 and was involved in 4 of our highest wicket partnerships. He has a tight defence and strong concentration that enables him to build an innings. His abilities were rewarded with selection in the Northern Districts Creak Shield Representative team. Congratulations on another great year.

Nic Wilson: Nic’s “stats” may not fully tell the story of his contribution to the team. If there were an award for fielding, Nic would probably win this every game. He saved countless runs in the field, chasing and diving after everything and made a number of run outs with a strong flat throws. With the bat, Nic averaged 19 & was involved in four of the team’s highest wicket partnerships, including the highest against Epping Blue where he, James Howes and Mitchell Carter steadied the ship and saw us home to a victory. Improved shot selection & slightly quicker scoring will see even better results come his way. Nic is also a very accurate bowler, giving away only 1.6 runs an over and was always reliable in keeping an end tied down. Nic was rewarded this year with selection in the Creak Shield representative team for Northern Districts where he showed his versatility by bowling spin!

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 12 West

The team made significant improvements from where it started with a unique mix of players – few starting their cricket and with others few years of cricket behind them. There was a need to give opportunity for new players to experience cricket- batting at the top order at the tail, bowl and gain confidence and also to lead a team. Experienced players needed to improve their skills and have opportunities to grow. We have worked on meeting these needs.

The team has moved quite forward with some players settling down on their batting order and bowling positions. The team has grown in confidence and the new players know what they are good at and what need to improve. Experienced players were patient with inexperienced players – gave few tips, worked with them and encouraged them. We all had lot of fun.

Here are few notes on our players:

Mark Conliffe: Mark has an exemplary attitude to the game; he works hard on the field and enjoys the game at the same time. Mark is confident with the bat and approaches batting with an intention to score. Mark always tried to adapt his batting technique to the team situation in the game. Mark bowled economically with good line and length through out the season. He saved many runs for the team in his fielding near the boundary with his text book technique of fielding. Mark needs to work on playing flighted deliveries to stay for longer period at the wicket.

Lahiru Dassanayake: Lahiru improved his cricket skills significantly as we progressed in the season. Lahiru is now a dependable batsman who chooses his shots carefully and executes them perfectly. He improved his position in the batting order with every game. The team can now expect Lahiru to stay at the wicket and provide good support. Lahiru was thinking through his time at the crease and working on improvement.

Thimira Gunasekera: Thimira had done himself proud in this season. Thimira consolidated his batting skills and now stays at the wicket for long period. He is confident and plays solid defence. He is a good change bowler who can be expected by the captain to break a partnership. Thimira guards his field with concentration and saved few runs. With improved technique to be able to play balls coming on to pads he will to avoid being a potential leg before wicket victim.

Mitchell Horrocks: We found Mitchell to be a solid and dependable batsman as we started playing our season. He has an aggressive style in batting punishing loose balls and always looking to score runs. Mitchell often ended up scoring many runs in a short time. Mitchell also opened bowling containing the opposition batsman with fast and straight bowling. The team often missed Mitchell after Christmas as he started playing for the school on Saturdays.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Nikhil Khandavalli: Nikhil improved his bowling strike rate significantly during the season. He attacks the wickets with accurate bowling and got wickets for the team at difficult times. His bowling has a variety of balls in an over keeping the batsman on his toes. Nikhil scores quick runs when he settles down at the wicket. He hits hard and got a wide range of shots to punish opposition bowling. He needs to work on his delivery stride and timing with the bat to realise his potential next season.

Simon Macourt : Simon is an outstanding wicket keeper who often helps the bowler plan to get a batsman out. The captain can do without a fielder behind wicketkeeper when Simon is keeping the wickets. The bowling strike rate of Simon was best for the team. Simon troubled the batsmen turning the ball and maintaining good length. He is keen to score runs with the bat and is a good runner between the wickets. Simon enjoys the game and is a great team player.

Kasun Mayadunne: Kasun opened the batting for the team developing his technique in defending the ball. Kasun also started to improve bowling at the beginning of the season. The team missed just after few games as he moved Interstate.

Maneshan Mendis: Maneshan got the best out of the season in terms of improvement of his skills, and is now able to bat at the top of the order and stay at the wicket. His technique is sound and needs to improve his range of shots to score runs. Maneshan has started bowling and is getting better in accuracy and length. He is a team player with useful ideas on bowling and fielding strategies to win the game.

Shibalik Misra: Shibalik is our highest run scorer despite missing few games. Shibalik has an aggressive style of batting that forces opposition to form a defensive field quickly. He hits hard and scored many consecutive boundaries mixed with sixes. Shibalik also opened bowling with fast and straight bowls delivered with a new ball. Shibalik needs to work on hitting along the ground and into the gaps to reach further milestones with his outstanding batting. Shibalik scored more than 300 runs with two half centuries.

Rahul Mooray: Rahul is our main strike bowler with the new ball. Rahul is fast and accurate, invariably troubling the opposition openers and containing runs. Rahul brings lot of thinking in to the bowling and varies bowling depending on the weakness of the batsman. Rahul is a batsman who can bat at anywhere in the order and changes his style accordingly. He saved a match for the team with accurate defence in the last over. Rahul also kept wickets well for us in many games. Rahul is a great competitor.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Gavin Pinto: Gavin has settled down as a very good opening batsman for the team later in the season. Gavin has a good eye on the ball and displays confidence in his batting. He is solid in defence and can play for long time with a partner. Gavin was our fielder behind the wicketkeeper to not let any ball get away. He is always encouraging team members to keep the spirits up and came up with useful suggestions. Gavin is very keen to bowl as well and with practise will be able to commence his bowling career next season.

Rohan Rapyal: Rohan ended the season as a mature player as compared to starting in last September. He now has a method in his approach to batting and bowling and gained confidence with each game making a contribution with both the bat and bowl later in the season. Rohan would be proud of his batting with a range of shots and solid defence. He bowls good length and the batsman is in trouble if he misses the ball. It was great to see Rohan spending time at the wicket for a longer time later in the season.

Navdeep Shergill: Navdeep had a great season with both bat and the ball. He has settled down at the top of the order with good knocks in couple of games. Navdeep is confident of opening the batting and can see the shine off the new ball without any trouble. He is a good team player and talks and works with his batting partner on the field. Navdeep has the highest number of wickets in the team for the season and often troubled opposition with his flighted deliveries. Navdeep is a dependable close in fielder as well.

Ranjeet Singh: Ranjeet is an enthusiastic player developing his game. Ranjeet opened our batting in few games successfully and always built a partnership in the beginning of the innings. He is batting with confidence now driving the ball much harder into the gaps. He bowls good length attacking the wickets and claimed 3 wickets in the limited overs he sent. Ranjeet holds his catches and a dependable fielder away from the wicket. You can count on Ranjeet to always volunteer to do things when rest of the team is unsure.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 13 West

The Under 13 had an interesting season with a mix of good days and some bad. The team composed of a core of players who had played for some years together and blended well with new additions.

Each team member had a “moment” where they shone as individuals and the game plan for next season is to have greater consistency of these “moments” as well as developing concentration. The boys were nudged out of the final in a strong performance at Wood Street against St Patricks but will be back to fight another season.

Thank you to the parents for their support of the boys especially to Peter Trickett who umpired throughout the season and to the scorers Mark Downes, Roger Green and Gary Swilks, to the young coaches Geoff and Greg Lewis my thanks also.

Neeraj Bangalore: A fearless young man new to Epping and what a contribution he has made. With fantastic leg spin bowling, a capable opening bat and sound close in fielding he will develop into a fine cricketer. His passion for the game is obvious. His award for the most catches by a non-keeper is recognition of his ability.

Stephen Cox: Stephen returned to the cricket field this year after a season off, this his first year with Epping. He is a right hand batsman able to bowl medium pace and he is enthusiastic in the field. His technique will develop with time and practice.

Simon Davis: Simon is a reliable right hand batsman who can play to both sides of the wicket. His medium pace bowling is an asset to the team highlighted with his 5 for 9 against West Ryde. Simon is enthusiastic and energetic in the field and will happily field in close. All aspects of his game have improved throughout the season.

Lincoln Downes: Lincoln continued this season as the regular wicket-keeper keeping byes to minimum. He plays within and for the team and talks it up constantly to keep the team motivated. There was obvious improvement in his batting came during the second half of the season. It appears that Lincoln enjoys opening the batting as was evidenced in his stand in the last game of the season.

Rhys Galvin: Rhys is an accurate medium pace bowler who is feared by the opposition. Rhys has learned to be more patient in his batting and this has come as his confidence has grown throughout the season. Motivated and enthusiastic at both training and on game days he is another welcomed addition to the team.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Santosh George: This was Santosh’s first season of cricket and due to high school commitments only played the first half of the season. This limited his participation in what started as a large team, though; he was always willing to learn and was enthusiastic.

Joshua Green: Josh is a strong right hand batsman who plays well to both sides of the wicket, he is a fast opening bowler capable of swinging the ball both ways, he lives, eats and breaths cricket. The occasional loss of concentration shortened a couple of promising innings but he was always positive and motivated to try harder. The first half of the season the captaincy was rotated, it was the team who looked to Joshua in the second half of the season to be the captain, a role he embraced leading and encouraging the team well.

Brad Lewis: Brad is a technically sound left hand batsman who plays well to both sides of the wicket. His left hand medium/fast bowling is an asset to the team lending variety to the bowling attack with his ability to swing the ball both ways and reaping rewards when he bowls his in-swinging Yorker. His fielding is strong and dependable. High school commitments shortened his full participation in the second half of the season.

Tim O’Donnell: New to the team this season and our youngest player Tim stood up to the task and developed all aspects of his game. He kept capably when given the opportunity and given time will become a better more accurate medium pace bowler. Concentration will be the key to his success.

Senduran Ramaligham: Sendu is a classic right hand batsman who deflected and caressed the ball well throughout the season. When bowling Sendu demonstrates a beautiful fast medium pace with a strong wrist action and when consistent in his line and length achieves good results. He plays his cricket enthusiastically and is a strong team player.

Bikramjit Singh: Bik is a powerful batsman and when he hits the ball it stays hit, he scores quickly generally with this big hitting ability. He perhaps left his best bowling in the practice nets but as he is always willing to listen and learn with confidence and time he could become a very good bowler. In the field his powerful throwing is a bonus.

Ryan Swilks: This was Ryan’s first season of cricket and his natural athletic ability meant he was very quick between the wickets. He demonstrated a very good eye and with the obvious development in his batting technique he moved forward quickly, given time he will improve even more. Ryan always maintained concentration in the field and took several good catches.

Angus Trickett: It is clear that Angus has put in time and effort during the off season working on all aspects of his game. His batting improved throughout the season as did his concentration as he batted 25 and 30 overs in his last two matches building the team innings around his score. Angus is a reliable medium pace bowler who can swing the ball both ways and is not afraid to field in close taking several excellent catches.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 14 East

Under 14 East had a mixed season with some triumphs and some disappointments. After a great start the team fell into something of a form slump before coming back towards the end of the season with a couple of great wins. Loss of key players through injuries and other commitments may have been part of the reason for a run of losses mid-season. New players blended in well and all players enjoyed their cricket and showed improvement. Many thanks for the great parental support, with Craig Colborne the star, umpiring every game. The effort from Gen Mallin as manager, Mohan and Cristine Miller as scorers and others who came along to watch and support was very much appreciated by the players and coach.

Tom Ware: Representative duties and other commitments meant our best batsman was only available to play 9 innings this season. Tom’s undeniable talent showed through however, as he managed to top the batting average with 21.6, as well as recording the team high score of 53 and the highest aggregate of 169. Tom’s bowling showed considerable improvement this season, sending down 18 overs for 3 wickets at an average of 19. He was very tidy when called upon to keep wicket and showed his experience and talent in the field.

Robbie Colborne: Robbie’s season began with a wicket on his first ball and an amazing 7/14 on the day. Although understandably not able to reproduce those figures, Robbie proved a reliable and effective opening bowler sending down 79 overs - the most by quite a margin. He also took the most wickets - 14 at an average of 22.6. Robbie was solid as an opening batsman or down the order, averaging 12.5. Robbie played every game and showed maturity and focus in his approach.

Guru Sandhu: New to the club this season Guru proved a valuable acquisition with bat and ball. Unfortunately, a broken thumb, (which he sustained whilst batting, but played on), interrupted his season and his abilities were sorely missed for a few games. Guru was second in the batting average with 20.6 and a top score of 48. He bowled his fast /medium consistently well, frequently without luck, and took 7 wickets at 22.7.

Abhinav Yarrapotu: “Abs” started well with the bat but hit a mid-season slump along with the rest of the team. He came back later in the season to record some good scores - most notably an heroic 22 no to prevent an outright with the last man in. Abhinav finished with a solid average of 16.4, batting at number 3 or 4, as well as being called on to open on occasions despite his protests. He showed his all-round capabilities with 3 wickets at 24.3 from 15 overs. A good team man, Abs was always encouraging his team mates and setting a fine example in the field.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Thomas Nguyen: Thomas showed his great potential as a fast-scoring batsman on a couple of occasions and would have had greater success with a minimal increase in luck and/or patience. A high score of 40 showcased his talent. Thomas proved a useful first change bowler with 7 wickets at an average of 23.6, including 4/18 against the strong St Pats on a day when he really found his rhythm. Thomas is enormously keen on his cricket and it shows in all aspects of his game. His love of the game also means he keeps up with his homework, as his mother gets instant results by suggesting that he might miss a game if he doesn’t.

Phillip Miller: Phillip would be a little disappointed with his batting this season but should be very happy with the huge improvement in his bowling. Phillip developed into a very useful off-spinner with the ability to vary flight, pace and angle to both restrict scoring and to take wickets. Phillip’s batting will improve when he uses his well developed eye for the ball and suppresses his urge to go the long handle from the second delivery. Phillip will continue to develop into a fine spin bowler.

Devlin Press: In his first ever season of competitive cricket, Devlin was very much on a learning curve and will benefit from the experience. Devlin had limited opportunities batting and bowling but strove hard to develop his skills with considerable effort at training. While other more experienced bowlers were resting, (bludging), Devlin would still be sending them down. His enthusiasm was also evident when fielding.

Andrew Condon: Another in his first year, Andrew came to us from the ranks of baseball. A very athletic and capable fielder, he has some learning to come yet as a batsman but was quite a surprise as a bowler. Andrew’s longest innings was his most important as he partnered Abs in a last wicket stand to prevent an outright defeat. Although inexperienced as a bowler, Andrew bowled with enthusiasm and a deal of pace and showed great potential, taking 3 wickets at a respectable 22.3.

Jay Dalal: Jay batted lower down the order and never really got going with the bat but featured in a couple of decent partnerships when things were tough. Jay had only limited opportunities but always gave his best batting, bowling or fielding.

Heshon Fernando: Heshon was another with limited opportunities but with an ounce of luck could have made the one big score that every young cricketer needs. Hashon can be quite proud in sharing a 53 run last wicket partnership with Thomas Nguyen to turn a disaster into an almost respectable score against St Pats. Heshon bowled with enthusiasm and will benefit from the experience. A good team man who always gave his best in the field.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Steve Mallin: Our usual, “wickie”, and useful middle order batsman, Steve could always be relied on to get the score ticking over with his busy approach and his sharp running between wickets. A top score of 25 against North Ryde RSL was an excellent innings. Not content to stay behind the stumps and growl at the bowlers, Steve took the gloves off against Oakhill in the second round and showed the others how to do it, taking 4/11 off 5 overs. Steve’s effort helped secure a first innings win and also helped Steve sneak off with the season bowling figures with 5 wickets at an average of 8.4. Steve was very tidy behind the stumps and enthusiastic when fielding.

Prasadh Mohanathasan: Our star spinner, Prasadh was known to mesmerise many otherwise competent batsman in the district. Prasadh puts plenty of tweak on the ball and plenty of thought into each delivery. When Prasadh came on things happened. If he was belted he could always bounce back with a special delivery and often a wicket – the right attitude for a spinner. Prasadh was second behind Robbie both in the number of wickets and the mot overs bowled. He tried hard with the bat and showed improvement but was another who never really got going. Prasad always gave his best in the field.

Grant Smith: Grant played a couple of classic swashbuckling innings towards the end of the season after struggling with the bat early on. An excellent knock of 40 against Oakhill showed what a bit of confidence can do with Grant scoring quickly, hitting to all parts of the field. Grant only bowled a few overs but has potential - he is an athletic and enthusiastic fielder. Grant should start next season bristling with confidence.

Matthew Toole: Matthew missed a couple of games through injury, possibly causing him to miss out on the big innings that he needed. He had no luck with the bat, despite showing great potential, but bowled very well. Opening with his fast/medium Matthew bowled accurately and economically sending down 40 overs for 5 wickets at 21.6. Always alert and fast in the field Matthew sets a good example and encourages his team mates.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 15

Consistency and a sharing of the load, contributed to a successful season for the team. After a difficult season in 2002-03, to find themselves playing off for a spot in the final was a result few expected at the start of the season, but one which was well deserved. The results were once again built on tight and penetrative bowling and reliable, sharp fielding. All the bowlers contributed, and few opponents really ‘got away’. Batting was the relative weakness, but even here, there was notable improvement, with half the team returning double figure averages, nine of ten best partnerships exceeding 20 runs and five of those exceeding 30. Congratulations to all on a great season, finishing third among some good competition. We look forward to more of the same next summer.

Gaurav Agrawal: A new recruit, who brought natural athleticism to every aspect of his game. Fast and accurate in his bowling, sure handed and agile in the field, and steady with the bat, Gaurav is a wonderful addition and has become a key member of the team filling the opening position with bat and ball (a duty shared with Tom). He bowled well with little luck early on, but is always economical, leading the attack in good style.

Andrew Alice: Injury reduced Andrew’s participation this season, however when on the field he contributed in all facets of the game. Andrew started to rediscover some of his "old" form with the bat, particularly after the Christmas break, and played some patient and useful knocks (including a season best partnership of 65 with Jack). An athletic fieldsman with safe hands, he bowled with genuine pace (sometimes to his keepers dismay) and often unplayable swing making him a handful for opposing batsmen.

Amay Broota: Another new recruit, Amay set new standards for the team’s slips catching, not equalled in the season. Reminiscent of Clive Lloyd for those old enough to remember, he made difficult chances look easy, with fluid movement and anticipation. Amay enjoys his cricket, and to watch him at the crease with either bat or ball, is to see that while the words ‘conventional’ & ‘defensive’ will never be descriptions of his game, ‘effective’ certainly will, as the highest aggregate and best average of all batsmen attests.

Alex Burnett: The teams only dedicated spinner, Alex defied the approach of some slow bowlers to buy wickets, by achieving the best economy rate and best bowling average of the team. Alex’s bowling has the lot, but flight and bounce were his best weapons, used to good effect. Not as comfortable with his batting, he nevertheless gritted his teeth and was rewarded with a share in the best 9th and 10th wicket partnerships

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Tom Coleman: The leading wicket taker, Tom (with Gaurav) became part of both the opening batting and bowling attacks with good results in both aspects of the game. Tom bowls a very consistent line and length, and is rewarded with good economy and wickets (16 this year), bowling a maiden every 3 overs and getting a wicket every 5 overs. Batting improved this year as well giving him a share of the best 2nd & 3rd wicket partnerships.

Eric Conliffe: One of the most powerful hitters of the ball, Eric had a couple of starts cut short by some classic catches. He showed great form in the field, with improved anticipation and a very powerful throw, often restricting the batsmen with accurate returns over the stumps. Eric experimented with his bowling in the latter part of the season, turning some awkwardly bouncing spinners off a good length to both confuse batsmen and promise big things for next season.

Jack Dwyer: Always ready to step into the breach and lead by example, Jack enjoyed a fine season with bat and ball. 12 wickets at less than 10, best bowling of 4/1 with 1 in 3 overs being maidens, were fair examples of his prowess with the leather. His running between wickets was again a feature of his batting as was his consistency. He featured in three of the best partnership including the highest for any wicket (65 with Andrew). Safe and agile in the field, Jack produced yet another great all round season

Josh Martis: Either as a high bouncing spinner or a sling actioned quick, Josh mixed them up to good effect, conceding just over 1 run per over for the season. His anticipation in the field saw him rewarded with a great catch and cutting off many runs. Although a genuine tail ender, Josh never gave his wicket away, but played with determination to get as many runs as possible for the team.

Ben Muscat: Putting last season’s injury woes behind him, Ben really shone with the ball this season. His short approach, deceives because the ball comes out of the hand with real speed and as a result he bagged 11 wickets at 10 each, averaging one wicket every 4 overs. Powerful, accurate throws highlighted his athletic fielding. A powerful hitter of the ball, he chanced his eye more often than not and consequently didn’t get the returns he might.

Ryan Pinto: Joining us for the first time this season, Ryan quickly fitted into the team, and gave it everything he had all season. The high point was plainly his participation in a 54 run 8th wicket partnership with Pat, which really took the wind out of the premier’s bowlers. He backs his good eye, with hard hitting. Ryan worked hard on his bowling, is reliable in the field and will continue to improve next season.

Pat O’Brien: The new Mr Versatile, Pat had a great all round season, batting with authority anywhere in the order and being part of the best 1st, 2nd and 8th wicket partnerships. Like Jack his running between wickets was a feature, creating runs where others wouldn’t have dared try. 128 runs at 18 is a testament to his improved batting this season. Despite stints as keeper, his approach to the bowling crease brought hope of seeing yet another caught and bowled (his ‘favourite’ form of dismissal). 9 wickets at less than 6, shows his all round value and contribution to the team.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report

Kapil Vaswani: A quiet achiever, Kapil enjoyed another season, particularly with the ball and in the field. He bowls a very tight line and length, from an economical run and puts them on the spot time and time again, with wickets being taken as a result (9 at less than 6). Kapil is a steady batsman whose running between wickets was a real improvement this year. He played a couple of fine rear-guard actions, frustrating bowlers while accumulating the runs

Chris Wilson: The team’s regular keeper, Chris also managed a few overs of his skidding medium pacers, claiming a best of 1/14. Chris did great work behind the stumps as well picking up 6 catches as keeper and was the leading catcher for the season – for the Club! Not quite as successful with the bat as in prior seasons, Chris still played some of the most resolute defensive knocks in the team, despite suffering from a number of hand injuries as a result of his keeping. Another all round contributor.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Under 16

This was our last season, and as enjoyable as any. The boys were enthusiastic at training sessions, even though attendance seemed to be socially rather than athletically-based. We had big scores in 2 of the first 3 games, but struggled to make big scores from then on. This was partly because of Steve’s equity policy of rotating the batting order, and partly because we did not bat very well. The team made up for it: every player bowled well and took wickets and the fielding was good. We were unbeaten until the semi-finals, and won the final with a good total backed up by a good bowling and fielding display, a real team effort.

We have been a very successful team, thanks to the boys and to the coach, Steve Brompton, whose energy and enthusiasm are infectious. We thank our scorer, Denis, for his years of service. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Peter Dwyer and his committee, past and present, for all the hard work they put in, year in and year out, to allow us to enjoy our cricket.

Andrew Athavale: Andrew had a wonderful all-round season with bat and ball. He scored two fifties, including one in the Final, took a 5-wicket haul and took some great catches.

Julian Banks: Julian began the season on fire. He was out twice in the nineties, and his maiden century seemed inevitable. But he had few innings after that, and the hundred never arrived. A wonderful wicket-keeper, whose reluctance to concede byes often made a big difference between the sides’ scores.

Hugh Brompton: Hugh is a good cricketer, who had a quiet season by his high standards. He is always a fine contributor to the team, he hits the ball with great power, and his bowling is always dangerous. We hope he will keep playing and achieve his potential.

Steve Crowcroft: Steve was our outstanding player this season. He topped the bowling averages, and came second in the batting, including a fast fifty in the Final, which effectively won us the match. His fielding is always strong, and a run-out from a long flat throw in the Final was a major turning-point. It is not just catches that win matches, but fielding, too.

David Curiskis: David’s bowling was economical and accurate as ever. He was unlucky, too, to have more catches dropped off him than any other bowler.

Nick Esdaile: Nick’s enthusiasm is an inspiration to the team. In only his second season he improved enormously, with his lusty batting, the improved accuracy of his bowling and his fine fielding.

Pratik Gidwani: Pratik worked hard at his game all season, and his efforts were a joy to watch. He scored more runs than ever before, and took a good catch in the Final.

Epping Districts Cricket Club – Juniors – 2003/2004 Annual Report Mark Isaacs: Mark struggled to re-capture the accuracy and danger of his spin bowling, and with his batting too, apart from a match-winning innings against Oakhill. Like Hugh, Mark is a fine cricketer with the potential to play to a high level.

Nihal Koshy : Nihal started the season quietly, but ended it on a high. He bowled beautifully, with speed and accuracy in the last few matches. He also batted with confidence but little luck, and his short aggressive knock in the Final was invaluable.

Tynan O’Shea: Tynan continued to entertain and inspire the rest of the team with his antics and his vitality. He fielded fearlessly, as close in as possible, and took some great catches. His bowling action, with a jump just before delivery, is classic.

Rashmin Peiris: Rashmin matured as a fine all-rounder. We have always known his potential, but in the past he tended to let his enthusiasm run away with him, and get out to rash shots before playing himself in.
