Introduction The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is providing a summary of the scientific evidence that we identified for isolated or synthetic non-digestible carbohydrates that meet the definition of dietary fiber. We intend to propose this list of isolated or synthetic non-digestible carbohydrates be added to the dietary fiber definition, based on a review of the scientific evidence related to at least one physiological endpoint that is beneficial to human health. We previously identified two dietary fibers for which health claims may be made (beta-glucan soluble fiber and psyllium husk) (21 CFR 101.81). In the Federal Register of May 27, 2016 (81 FR 33742), we published a final rule amending our Nutrition Facts and Supplements Facts labels regulations (hereafter “the final rule”). So 23 Sep 2021 at 16:15:24 far, the bifidogenic effect of oligofructose and inulin has been demonstrated in animals and in adults, of oligofructose in infants and toddlers and of a long- chain inulin (10 %) and galactooligosaccharide (90 %) mixture in term and preterm infants. The addition of prebiotics to infant formula softens stools but other putative effects remain to be demonstrated. Studies published post marketing show that infants fed a long-chain inulin/galactooligosaccharide mixture (0·8 g/dl) in formula grow normally and have no side-effects. The addition of the same mixture at a concentration of 0·8 g/dl to infant formula was therefore recognized as safe by the European Commission in 2001 but follow-up studies were recommended. It is thought that a bifidogenic effect is beneficial for the infant host. The rising incidence in allergy during the first year of life may justify the attempts to modulate the infant’s flora. Much of the focus has been on the neuronal and hormonal relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. There is now mounting evidence that the colonic microbiota and their metabolic activity have a significant role in energy homeostasis. The supply of substrate to the colonic microbiota has a major impact on the microbial population and the metabolites they produce, particularly short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are produced when non-digestible carbohydrates, namely dietary fibres and resistant starch, undergo fermentation by the colonic microbiota. Both the consumption of fermentable carbohydrates and the administration of SCFAs have been reported to result in a wide range of health benefits including improvements in body composition, glucose homeostasis, blood lipid profiles and reduced body weight and colon cancer risk. However, published studies tend to report the effects that fermentable carbohydrates and SCFAs have on specific tissues and metabolic processes, and fail to explain how these local effects translate into systemic effects and the mitigation of disease risk. Moreover, studies tend to investigate SCFAs collectively and neglect to report the effects associated with individual SCFAs. Here, we bring together the recent evidence and suggest an overarching model for the effects of SCFAs on one of their beneficial aspects: appetite regulation and energy homeostasis.

    SUGAR.02-1 REDUCING SUGARS (Schoorl Method) PRINCIPLE Reducing sugars are determined by reaction of a water soluble portion of the sample with an excess of standard copper sulfate in alkaline tartrate (Fehling's) solution under controlled conditions of time, temperature, reagent concentration and composition, so that the amount of copper reduced is proportional to the amount of reducing sugars in the sample analyzed. In this adaptation of Schoorl's method (Note 1) the reducing sugar concentration expressed as dextrose, is estimated by iodometric determination of the unreduced copper remaining after reaction. SCOPE This method was designed specifically for steepwater, water soluble dextrins and maltodextrins and is applicable to other carbohydrates, such as low DE glucose syrups and solids (Note 2). Dextrins are modified starches prepared from starch by heat treatment in the dry state with or without the addition of small quantities of reagents. The method is not recommended for samples above 30 DE, since it tends to give higher results as the relationship of reduced copper with respect to reducing sugars becomes less linear at the higher DE's. Alkaline extraction was used to isolate the hemicellulose arabinoxylan (AX) from barley husk, while the hemicellulose galactoglucomannan (GGM) was obtained through concentration of pulp process water. Hemicelluloses can be used to produce materials. One way to increase the processability of the hemicellulose is to perform chemical modifications on it. By doing so, the properties of hemicellulose can be altered, such as decreased glass transition temperature (Tg), which will change the ability to process the hemicellulose into material.
