He was the first high school athlete to run the TRACK AND FIELD LEGEND, CONGRESSMAN, AUTHOR, EDUCATOR AUTHOR, EDUCATOR AND FIELD LEGEND, CONGRESSMAN, TRACK mile in under 4 minutes. Jim participated in three summer Olympic Games: 1964, 1968, and 1972, winning a silver medal in the 1500 meter run in 1968. Jim also held the World Record in the mile, 1500 meters and 880 yards. He turned professional shortly after the 1972 Olympic Games.
