The Shy, Scary, Sacred Riana OCTOBER 2019• $6.50 Genii THE CONJURORS’ MAGAZINE The Sacred Riana The Shy, Scary Sacred Riana Riana was a normal Indonesian girl, once. But when her family moved into a new house in Jakarta, she discovered Riani, a strange, neglected doll that had been waiting, it seemed, for someone to take an interest. The pair became inseparable, but Riana had yet to under- stand the consequences of their growing bond. Eventually, Riana realized that Riani was no mere toy. When she kept the doll with her, all seemed well. But left to her own devices, Riani unleashed her magic upon the world. 18 GENII by Chloe OlewitzOCTOBER 2019 19 Riana soon discovered that Riani’s powers were rub- bing off on her, and that in order to mitigate the doll’s dark influence she would have to faithfully carry on their connection. Riana was shy anyway, and she knew she could do with a friend, even an inanimate one. With Riani’s magic flowing through her, Riana learned to read minds, summon demons, capture ghostly spirits, and communicate with the beyond. 20 GENII 2019 10 OCT Ed.indd 20 9/3/19 7:38 PM Or at least, that’s the legend The Sacred particularly appropriate when framed against Riana’s many creators concocted. We concluded that the programme did not raise issues which warranted investigation under the Broadcasting Code. Ofcom received approximately 24,5001 complaints about the above programme. Complainants outlined a range of concerns about Diversity’s performance, including that the themes of violence and racism were inappropriate for family viewing, that it expressed support for the political organisation ‘Black Lives Matter’ and that it was racist towards White people. Ofcom also received a number of messages of support and praise for the performance. Ofcom has assessed this programme against the relevant rules in the Broadcasting Code (“the Code”). Our assessment is that this programme did not raise any issues which warranted investigation. In our view, Diversity’s performance was an artistic expression of topical social issues and did not contain any content which was racist, unsuitably violent or otherwise inappropriate in the context of this programme. BILLY & EMILY ENGLAND Extreme Roller-Skating Duo BILLY & EMILY ENGLAND America’s Got Talent Semi-Finalists / Extreme Roller-Skating Duo Billy & Emily England are a brother and sister duo who loves the grace and elegance of roller-skating. Originally from Birmingham, England, they now live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Billy & Emily are seventh generation circus performers who have been roller-skating since they were six years old. They were always skating; even when it was raining their mother would take the furniture out of their kitchen so they could use it as a skating rink. They practiced every day - even on the kitchen table - and began to perform at school and in churches around England. As they perfected their skills, local TV stations and newspapers began to notice and they soon became local stars. They competed on Season 9 of Britain's Got Talent, where they made it all the way to the Semi Finals. In 2008, Emily was a contestant on Big Brother: Celebrity Hijackalong (with her brother Billy); she finished in second place. In 2010, Emily competed in Season 4 of Das Supertalent, where she was, again, a Semifinalist. Billy & Emily competed in America's Got Talent on Season 12. They were fan favorites and finished in the top 10. They are currently the star attraction in Absinthe Las Vegas. • The Illusionists -- Magic of the Holidays.” This Show Is Action-Packed, Fun and Funny, Interactive, and Very Intriguing
Do you want to be amazed? We had the opportunity to see one of the greatest shows on Broadway: “The Illusionists -- Magic of the Holidays.” This show is action-packed, fun and funny, interactive, and very intriguing. As far as what the magicians were doing, it was truly amazing. Adam Trent, The Futurist, not only performed as an illusionist but also was the host of the show. He used screens and different objects from the audience in a lot of his illusions. Those illusions were especially cool because they weren’t planned ahead. Adam is a really cool illusionist. Colin Cloud, the Deductionist, was a mind reader; he did some really amazing things, and he always knew that everyone was thinking it was crazy. He even got some lady's mom’s maiden name. We got to meet Colin before the show. He talked to us about when he starting getting into magic, when he received a magic set for Christmas one year. Advertisement. Shin Lim, the Manipulator, not only won a million dollars on “Americas Got Talent,” he also won a role on this show. He is known for his outstanding card ticks. He can make then disappear, go in his mouth, make tattoos, and even light them on fire. Shin also has a YouTube channel where he has other people try to fool him, and if you do you can get an education in magic. It's insane. Chloe Crawford, the Sorceress, is not an ordinary illusionist. Before she started her act, she told the audience that her magic was more disturbing than the other acts.

  • Adapting Idols Joost De Bruin and Koos Zwaan
Introduction: Adapting Idols Joost de Bruin and Koos Zwaan Idols is one of the most popular and successful global television formats produced in the last decade. The format has been adapted in over 40 territories all over the world, as the appendix – compiled by Sukhpreet Singh and Martin Kretschmer for this book – shows. The original show, Pop Idol, went to air in the UK in 2001. The next year, local versions of the show were broadcast in Poland, South Africa, the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. By the end of 2004 – exactly three years after the introduction of Pop Idol – 30 territories were screening their own Idols shows, illustrating the rapid global spread of the format. In some cases Idols was produced for transnational geographic regions, such as Asian Idol – with auditions in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam – and the Pan-Arab Superstar, which featured contestants from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Algeria. The most recent branch on the global Idols tree at the time of writing is Idol Puerto Rico. The owners of the Idols format, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, have thus managed to capitalize on the work put into the design of the original UK show by turning it into a format and selling it to a range of territories. The goal of Idols shows is to involve a nation (or a region consisting of several different nations) in a quest for a popular music idol who can be admired by all. Idols shows are commonly divided into four distinct phases (Holmes 2004).
