  • The Jackson 5
The Jackson 5 Group 1: Elizabeth Nessim, Lydia Sour, Lauren Johnson, Jimmy Schmidt, Madie Domm, Megan Koenig Statement of Interest We selected the Jackson 5 as our topic for this presentation because they were, and continue to be, a significant leader in the evolution of rock music through the decades. Out of this group, the world renowned Michael Jackson emerged as a legend of pop music. Furthermore, the group's vast influences on artists, and culture, paved the way for the exploration of new musical styles through the later half of the twentieth century. We wanted to explore the roots of significant artists to better understand how they influenced the music of today. Overview of the Group (5) • American popular music group • Formed in 1963 under the name: The Jackson Brothers • They entered the professional music scene four years later in 1967 • They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, but their music covered numerous other genres including: - R&B - Soul - Disco - Funk - Dance-Pop - Pop Rock Motown (2) • Small record label (originally called Tammie Records, later changed to Tamla Records) started by Berry Gordy Jr., an African American -Preference for sophisticated jazz music, not as much for Rhythm and Blues -Based out of Detroit (because of the large black population) • “Shop Around” by the Miracles in 1960 became a #2 hit against all odds • Motown then became the “Cinderella Story” of the recording industry • Within 7 year, Motown had become an empire The Motown Style The Motown style included: • A professional orchestration and vocals (lead singer with vocal backup) • Catchy rhythms and lyrics that appealed to a wide audience • There is a strong beat with a heavy backbeat reinforced by clapping • Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Pop influences • No improvisation, very controlled Early Years and Formation (6) From their young year, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie showed an interest in the guitar and singing, so their father formed their group naming them the Jackson Brothers, with Marlon and Michael playing the tambourine and congas.

  • MICHAEL JACKSON : Remembering the King of Pop
MICHAEL JACKSON : Remembering the King of Pop by Valerie Mikell During an interview at the height of his career, Michael Jackson was asked, “What do you know for sure?” He replied, “I’m still learning…I can’t say I know anything for sure.” By that time, he’d been performing for more than three decades. He’d been crowned The King of Pop. He’d already released the world’s best selling album, which also earned a record-breaking eight Grammys during one show. If someone had asked him that same question little more than a decade later, what would he have replied? Reflecting on the dramatic twists and turns his life had taken, he may have reminded us that he knew he was talented. He knew he was flawed. And he realized that he was only human. Until his sudden passing at the young age of 50, Michael and the world may have forgotten that he was just a man. Much like Michael Jackson, the legends or icons we revere are not born into wealth or fed from birth with a silver spoon. They come from families filled with regular folk who work at ordinary jobs in the hopes of keeping food on the table. What is it that drives the artists and performers we idolize? Is it a need to stand out and showcase their individuality? Is it the obligation to make good of the gifts that have been bestowed upon them? Is it the desire to provide a better life for their families? Many of these things may have contributed to the success of Michael Jackson, who began his musical journey alongside his brothers and whose solo career catapulted himself to mega stardom.

Silver Eagle USA Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Silver Eagle Discography Silver Eagle was a Canadian company headquartered near Toronto at 115 Apple Creek Blvd., Markham, Ontario, Canada. The label was a subsidiary of LaBuick & Associates Media, Inc., and label President was Ed LaBuick. The Media company specialized in TV marketing, and in addition to Silver Eagle also promoted Time-Life. In addition to LPs, Cassettes, and CDs, Silver Eagle also released videos. They established an office in the US at 4 Centre Drive, Orchard Park, NY (later, 777 N. They typically would pre-sell an album using 2-minute TV spots in stations across the country, then use that demand to place product in retail stores. URBAN DANCE or STREET DANCING, as we know it today involves Locking, Popping, Breaking, street style jazz and other forms of dance that developed out of urban culture rooted in American cities. It is deeply connected to Hip-Hop music and has become accepted as a legitimate art form seen across the world on television, videos and on theatrical stages as well as utilized in choreography by major dance companies. Locking Locking style involves a “clown look” fun movements like “the funky chicken” and other comedy moves. This was a dance style that was originally a “goof” dance or a “mistake” that became a media sensation with early 1970 TV shows based on unique characters and style. Some teachers out there might remember charactors like Re-Run! The significance of “Locking” was that it was the first style of Urban Dance gathering media attention. Robotics and Electric Boogaloo This style of dance became popular with the electronic funk sound and drum beat in songs in 70’s and 80’s. Many of you might have seen videos of “Michael Jackson’s Dancing Machine” and other Robotic dances of that era! WHAT IS BREAK DANCE? Although the exact beginning of Break dance is unclear, it seems to have emerged as a style of street dance during the 1970's.

  • Michael Jackson & Television Before Thriller
Michael Jackson & Television Before Thriller by Matthew Delmont, Ph.D. [email protected] Assistant Professor, American Studies, History and Africana Studies, Scripps College, Claremont, California The Jackson Five had a huge effect on television. —Margo Jefferson, On Michael Jackson1 The primary form of Jackson’s secular spirituality is televisual. In fact, the major moments in Jackson’s vocation have been catalyzed by the visual medium, either on television or in music video. —Michael Eric Dyson, “Michael Jackson’s Postmodern Spirituality”2 We’ve lost a lot because of TV. You should be able to move people without all that advanced technology, without pictures, using only sound. —Michael Jackson, Moonwalk3 One of the paradoxes of Michael Jackson’s career is that he was deeply suspicious of television, the medium that helped him become a global superstar. The sense of loss Jackson expressed in his 1988 autobiography is not the sentiment of an old-timer frustrated with new technologies; rather, it is the voice of a performer who came of age with, and whose music and stardom became inseparable from, television. From his groundbreaking music videos to the tabloid news coverage of his eccentricities and controversies, television played a major role in Jackson’s career. Although Michael Jackson’s performance on Motown 25 and his “Thriller” video are typically understood as his major television breakthroughs, Jackson performed on network television with the Jackson Five dozens of times from 1969 to 1976. These early performances show how Jackson honed his skills as a television performer, and make it clear that before Jackson released Thriller in 1982 his television image had already been circulated and commoditized in various program, with significant profits for media producers.
