PROWLER: Stories by Conor Hultman A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of Mississippi in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College Oxford May 2019 Approved by _________________________________ Advisor: Professor Beth Ann Fennelly _________________________________ Reader: Professor Dustin Parsons _________________________________ Reader: Dr. Kathryn McKee i DEDICATION For Emma Richardson, who got me started, and for Beth Ann Fennelly, who kept me going. ii ABSTRACT CONOR HULTMAN: Prowler: Stories (Under the direction of Beth Ann Fennelly) These are a collection of five short stories. Their common feature is the use of the first-person perspective. The intent of these prose experiments was to find the limitations of the first-person narrative, to see how it could be disfigured and reborn. In preparation, I read several books with my advisor that are known for their strong first-person voices. These included: If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home by Tim O’Brien, Always Happy Hour by Mary Miller, The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker, Birds of America by Lorrie Moore, and The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel. I also undertook personal research, drawing inspiration from the writings of Stephen Dixon and Larry Brown, among others. What I found was that, for all the rules that are often associated with short story writing, successful stories are as unalike as possible. I began to feel I had the right to experiment in every facet of my work. Under the direction of my advisor, I learned to mettle these flights of imagination with sense and taste.

  • FY14 Tappin' Study Guide
Student Matinee Series Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life Study Guide Created by Miller Grove High School Drama Class of Joyce Scott As part of the Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists’ Dramaturgy by Students Under the guidance of Teaching Artist Barry Stewart Mann Maurice Hines is Tappin’ Thru Life was produced at the Arena Theatre in Washington, DC, from Nov. 15 to Dec. 29, 2013 The Alliance Theatre Production runs from April 2 to May 4, 2014 The production will travel to Beverly Hills, California from May 9-24, 2014, and to the Cleveland Playhouse from May 30 to June 29, 2014. Reviews Keith Loria, on theatermania.com, called the show “a tender glimpse into the Hineses’ rise to fame and a touching tribute to a brother.” Benjamin Tomchik wrote in Broadway World, that the show “seems determined not only to love the audience, but to entertain them, and it succeeds at doing just that! While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert. The show doesn’t flinch from hard-core nostalgia; the heart-on-his-sleeve Hines is too sentimental for that. It’s frankly schmaltzy, and it’s barely written — it zips through selected moments of Hines’s life, creating a mood more than telling a story. it’s a pleasure to be in the company of a shameless, ebullient vaudeville heart.” Maurice Hines Is .

Michael Jackson Biography • Occupation: Singer • Born: August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana • Died: June 25, 2009 in Los Angeles, California • Best known for: Thriller, the best-selling album in history • Nickname: King of Pop Biography: Michael Jackson by Jack Kightlinger Where was Michael Jackson born? Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 19, 1958. Michael's father, Joe Jackson, worked as a crane operator at a steel mill. His mother, Katherine, took care of the family and sometimes took part time jobs. Both of Michael's parents loved music. His dad played guitar for an R & B band and his mother sang and played the piano. Growing up, all of the Jackson children were encouraged to study music. The Jackson Family Michael grew up in a large family. He had five brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy) and three sisters (Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet). Michael was the third youngest with Randy and Janet both being younger. The Jacksons were fairly poor and lived in a small house with just two bedrooms for eleven people. A Strict Father Joe Jackson was a very strict father. He didn't allow the kids to have a lot of friends and he often whipped the children if they disobeyed. He wanted them to stay out of trouble and away from gangs. Later, when the Jackson 5 was still getting started, Joe would push the boys to practice for hours. He would hit them or verbally abuse them if they made a mistake. A Young Singer The three older brothers (Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine) formed a band called the Jackson Brothers.

The Pippin Score – Stephen Schwartz Answers Questions About the Songs of Pippin The following questions and answers are from the archive of the StephenSchwartz.com Forum. Copyright by Stephen Schwartz 2010 all rights reserved. No part of this content may be reproduced without prior written consent, including copying material for other websites. Feel free to link to this archive. Send questions to [email protected] Pippin: Corner of the Sky alternate lyrics? Question: Dear Stephen, I'm a fan for over 30 years, blah blah. I have a question about Corner of the Sky. I've seen two different sets of lyrics for it; the one I'm familiar with has the lyrics "Rain comes after thunder; winter comes after fall" while the other one uses "Thunderclouds have their lightning". I learned the one I learned because that's the version my 1983 singing partner Heidi knew. Can you enlighten me about these differing versions? Also, for some strange reason my brain keeps wanting to do "Rivers will run" instead of "Rivers belong" and "Children play in" instead of "Children fit in"-- I think I was doing that back in '83 too. Why do I do that? Did such lyrics ever exist, or is it just my brain acting weird (and if so, should I correct myself?)? …Thank you for all your wonderful contributions both in the music world and on this board, archived messages of which I've been reading the past few days and from which I'm receiving much inspiration and support. -Walter Answer from Stephen Schwartz: Your guess was a good one.
