He was promoted to assistant head coach during the spring of 2004. Sundheim's on-the-field efforts are centered on his responsibilities as tight ends coach. In his previous 17 years at Liberty, he has coached in a variety of capacities; however, the first 12 seasons were of a defensive nature. In 2001, he served as the defensive backs coach, while previously coaching two years as the outside linebacker coach, six years as defensive secondary coach and three years as defensive coordinator. In 1999, Sundheim's defense showcased itself as one of the most opportunistic squads in the NCAA I-AA ranks, leading the country in turnovers (40), ranking second in turnover margin (1.82) and yielding only 17.7 points a contest, the best mark by a Flames' defensive squad over the past 16 years.
