I shared T.S. Eliot’s sentiment that: “Th is is the way the world ends, Not with a bang but a whimper.”1 Surely a vibrant culture that took centuries to develop would have to experience a prolonged demise. I could not imagine that its downfall would be as pre- cipitous as it has proven to be. Because of the complexities involved, it is diffi cult to identify a specifi c date or period when the descent began. Suf- fi ce it to say that the process was well underway by the time Henry Kiss- inger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Th e sense of civility that helps give meaning to a “civilization” is in full retreat. Our institutionalized social behavior has reverted to its reac- tive, reptilian origins; our thinking has become dominated by the politi- cal imperative that all of life is to be subjected to the exercise of collec- tive power. Indeed, the formal systems through which we have organized and identifi ed ourselves could be described as being in an ever-escalating war with life itself. As the creators of sophisticated technologies, we have made ourselves increasingly machine-like; robotic servants of institutional 1 T.S. Eliot, Th e Hollow Men, 1925. ix x · Th e Wizards of Ozymandias systems we have been conditioned to revere, whose purposes we neither understand nor control, and of which we are afraid to ask questions. Our corporate-state world plunders, enslaves, controls and destroys us, all in the name of advancing our liberty and material well-being. Most of us are dominated by an unfocused fear of uncertainty, a longing for the security of emptiness. Th e reasoned intelligence and spiritual inspiration that would other- wise power life energies, remain suppressed within us. Our current art, music, and literature largely entertain and amuse us (“amuse” being a way of distracting us from the meditative infl uences provided by the muses). What we refer to as “classical music” was oft en the popular music of earlier centuries. A century or two from now, which “rock” musician is likely to stand alongside Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, and Mahler as expressions of the inner spirit of mankind? What modern writers will be compared to Shakespeare, Dante, Emily Dickinson, or Walt Whitman? If there is one period in Western history that I think refl ects what we have become, it would be the French Revolution. What could be a more fi tting symbol for that period of collective madness, destruction, and inhu- manity than the guillotine, ever busy searching for new victims? Whatever visions of mankind in society have been off ered by the numerous creators of Western Civilization are being lost as the culture, itself, disappears into history’s “black hole.” My oldest daughter, Bretigne, may have most suc- cinctly encapsulated the changes occurring during her lifetime when she wrote: “I don’t know who the people around me are anymore.”2 Long before having children of my own, I embraced the idea that one had a moral obligation not to allow his or her children to live under tyr- anny. I continue to hold to this principle, even as I acknowledge my failure to accomplish that end. I continue in my eff orts, insisting upon such peace- ful means as writing, speaking, and teaching, for there are no shortcuts to the transformation of consciousness upon which such a task depends. My current writing is directed to a select audience of fi ve people: my grand- children. I share Albert Jay Nock’s purpose of writing for the benefi t of the Remnant, to whom will be left the task of helping to restore civilized soci- ety aft er the end of our destructive one. Still, my own eff orts are motivated more by the presence of these fi ve people, in the hope that they—and all the other children and grandchildren of the world—can walk away from 2 Bretigne Shaff er, “Mere Anarchy Loosed Upon the World,” in Why Peace, Marc Guttman, ed. Preface · xi the organized bondage others have planned for them; that they can live in a truly civilized civilization based upon the self-directed, self-serving, creative, free, and peaceful behavior that it is their nature to enjoy as hu- man beings. Is it possible that the world my generation will leave to the next can be transformed; that society can become decent and supportive of life? Can conditions of peace and liberty replace the wars, coercive regulation, and worship of violence that have combined to destroy our present civilization? Th e book ends with such questions, and invites the reader to contemplate how such a life-centered culture might arise. It is inherent in all writing that the author of a work bears the respon- sibility for its substantive content. It is also the case that a book does not get into print without a great deal of help from others. Th is work is no exception to this fact. Among those who provided me with such assistance were Spencer and Emalie MacCallum and David Gordon, three friends who were kind enough to review and provide constructive criticism of the manuscript. Abstract Science fiction (SF) films have frequently been the home for subtextual biblical characters, particularly Christ-figures. Crafting these sacred subtexts can make the difference between an ordinary filmandan exceptional one. This investigation intends to explore the religious and other dimensions of the 1951 SF cult classic The Day the Earth Stood Still directed by Robert Wise. In Part 1 of this analytical triptych, the film’s reception as a UFO film with political, artificial intelligence (AI), police and philosophical dimensions was canvassed. It was argued that Wise’s film contains all of the above genre dimensions; however, it can bemore fully appreciated as a profoundly religious film wrapped in contemporary scientific garb. The forthcoming parts will explore the factual elements of this proposition in far greater analytical detail. Introduction: SF and Sacred Storytelling Historically speaking, science fiction (SF) films(1) have harboured numerous hidden biblical characters in typically covert forms. For example, Barry McMillan described many an SF alien as ”a ’transcendent’ being - a benign entity who brings wisdom and knowledge, the imparting of which brings resolution, insight and the beginnings of personal or political harmony” (360). Whilst Bonnie Brain argued that: ”The ascendancy of the aliens derives strongly from their aura of religious authority. Teachers, mystics, priests, or prophets, capable of ”miracles” and, in some cases, ”resurrection,” these aliens flirt with divinity” (226).

When this happens in science fiction — 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still is the classic — the planet pays attention. The flying saucer lands; an alien, in this case played by Michael Rennie, emerges; a final warning is issued: Stop it. If you don’t, you’re doomed. Back then, the “it” was violence — the Cold War, and the threat of nuclear midnight. Last week, it was climate change — greenhouse gases, and the promise of ecological extinction. “Heat-Trapping Gas Passes Milestone, Raising Fears,” ran the headline on the front page lead story in Saturday’s New York Times, with this sub-head: “CO2 at Level Not Seen in Millions of Years, Portending Major Climate Changes.” A headline like that — millions of years? really? — normally turns up in comic books and superhero movies, not in the paper of record. In fiction, what usually comes next is a montage. At breakfast tables and on street corners, in souks and igloos, in the Oval Office and at the U.N., the shocking news galvanizes humanity into action. Some would say too much has happened. However, of particular note recently was the failure of Congressional Republicans to pass a “repeal and replace” bill for the Affordable Care Act. As numerous commentators have observed, the failure was due to an inability among House GOP members to decide on what should be the. That inability, combined with a seeming presidential indifference to the details of what the bill contained, doomed the effort. We can come back to the whys of that failure in a future musing. But, supposedly, the next big agenda item in Congress is to be tax “reform.” And, as in the case of health care, there seems to be no consensus among the Republic majority on what such reform should entail. One version of reform, sometimes said to be under consideration and sometimes said to be off the table, is a so-called border adjustment tax. So let’s look at what such a tax might entail. “Might” is the right word, since there is no explicit proposal. The idea seems to be that a tax (tariff) would be imposed on imports of, say, 20%, and a symmetrical subsidy would be given to exports at the same 20% rate.

Not only have the words “Klaatu barada nikto” entered the vast murky pool of 20th-century pop trivia (whatever they may actually mean), but the combined images of the silvery flying saucer having landed in the heart of Washington D.C., with the stolidly erect shape of the robot Gort rising up from its sensuous swell, have remained immediately recognizable, long past the film’s moment of historical urgency. For those familiar only with these pieces of trivia, the film itself might come as a surprise, least of all for its barely concealed Christian allegory: Klaatu (Michael Rennie), the alien emissary who is promptly shot after emerging from his ship, decides to forego his celebrity status and adopts the name It is ironic that “Carpenter” to walk unrecognized among humanity in order to the poster art is so violent, given learn more about us.     ADJOURN IN THE MEMORY – ALAN BOCK Colleagues, I ask that we adjourn today’s meeting in the memory of Alan W. Bock. A senior editorial writer and columnist for The Orange County Register who gained national prominence as a champion of libertarianism in work spanning more than three decades, Alan passed away on May 18 at the age of 67 at his home in Lake Elsinore. One of four children, Alan was raised in Trona, a tiny and isolated unincorporated area of San Bernardino County southwest of Death Valley. He attended UCLA on a National Merit scholarship, graduating with a degree in political science and journalism – and turning into a diehard Bruins basketball fan who could rattle off the names of players and their stats, and details of the team's victories and defeats over the years. Bock became interested in the philosophy of libertarianism, attending the 1969 Young Americans for Freedom convention in St. Louis when the modern libertarian movement is said to have been born as a distinct movement. He joined the Register in 1980 as a member of the Opinion and Commentary staff and held a variety of positions at the paper – churning out editorials and columns for more than 30 years. In addition, he wrote magazine articles for Reason, Freeman, National Review, Harvard Business Review, Liberty, National Educator, Chronicles of Culture, and others. He won a number of awards, including from the California Newspaper Publisher's Association. A former radio talk-show host, Bock also appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, PBS, and as a guest on numerous radio shows.

    Raymond Hinnebusch THE AMERICAN INVASION OF IRAQ: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES Raymond HINNEBUSCH* As the Middle East has become the centerpiece of its drive for global hegemony, America’s de-stabilizing impact on the region has deepened; equally, the reaction from the Middle East to US policy carries important consequences for US hegemony globally. The Iraq war is the pivotal event around which these developments centre. Explaining the US Invasion of Iraq The invasion of Iraq can only be properly understood by bringing together three levels of analysis: 1) US global grand strategy 2) the US strategic position in the Middle East; and 3) the interests of Bush's ruling coalition. Understanding the Iraq war, in turn, exposes the inner mainsprings of US Middle East policy and the region's pivotal role in overall US global strategy. US Global Grand Strategy and the Middle East The starting point for understanding the invasion of Iraq is the grand strategy of the US under Bush to undertake a coercive assertion of global hegemony. The Project for a New American Century frankly acknowledges this reach for hegemony. The Bush doctrine and the 2002 National Security Strategy, formulated in response to the 9/11 attacks, make explicit the coercive turn: the call for "full spectrum dominance;" the strategy of dealing with resistance to the US not simply through traditional containment, but via "preventive wars;" the resort to unilaterialism, with ad-hoc "coalitions of the willing;" the view that states not with the US in the war on terrorism are against it; and the claim that only the US liberal model is legitimate, with sovereignty exempting no nation from the demand that it conform.
