WASHINGTON, D.C. — “We love you.” The words warmed the chill during the first of two days of Supreme Court oral arguments on the future of marriage law in the United States. The scene outside the Court building, where most of the media was camped out, reminded me of the story of the Tower of Babel in the Bible. Only here, everyone was using the same word, but couldn’t quite agree on what it meant. But closer to the Washington Monu- ment, a pastor had a prayer. C M C M Y K A8• The World • Tuesday, April 2,2013 Y K A little update DILBERT on favorite laundry detergent Some of the strangest looks I get are from people who just don’t get why I would make my own laundry detergent. I’ve written about FRANK AND ERNEST this before on my blog at EverydayCheapskate.com, but for those of you who aren’t convinced, I'd like another chance to change your mind. Cost. You're not sur- prised that this would be first on my list. In my own unsci- EVERYDAY entific CHEAPSKATE way, I have THE BORN LOSER done exhaus- tive research on this. When a bottle of Tide or ALL Mary laundry deter- Hunt gent promis- es “82 Loads,”consider the ZITS fine print. Realistically, you have to cut that num- ber of loads in half if you have a high-capacity washer. My research has deter- mined that, on average, regularly priced laundry detergent costs from $.35 to $.50 per load of laundry. That may not sound like much to you until you consider that you can CLASSIC PEANUTS make your own detergent for about $.03 to $.05 per load. Performance. My THE FAMILY CIRCUS homemade detergent just works, and that’s saying a lot coming from a laundry stickler like myself. And I know exactly what’s in it, too. My whites come out white, colors are bright, and all my laundry is super FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE clean. This homemade version is low-sudsing, which makes it perfect for the high-efficiency wash- ers. Time. There is another factor in play with anything homemade, and that’s time. As I wrote about last year, I was very excited to find a super fast and super easy homemade laundry deter- gent recipe at a fun blog, OneGoodThingbyJillee.com. ROSE IS ROSE The recipe uses one of DPL’s favorite products — Blue Dawn Ultra — in place of Fels Naptha bar soap. And this requires no cook- ing and is low-sudsing. Quick and easy laundry detergent 3 tablespoons borax 3 tablespoons washing soda 2 tablespoons Blue Dawn Ultra LUANN Find a 1-gallon contain- er with a tight-fitting lid. Pour in the borax, washing soda and liquid Dawn. Add two cups of very hot water. Apply the lid and shake until the soda and borax have dissolved. Now, fill the container with cold water. Reapply the lid and label the container. To use: Add 1 to 2 cups to each load of laundry depending on GRIZZWELLS the size and soil levels. This recipe multiplies well, so I make 3 gallons using this conversion, which is slightly more concentrated: 3 ⁄4 cup borax 3 ⁄4 cup washing soda 3 ⁄4 cup Blue Dawn Ultra I have experimented with the amount to use in my high-efficiency, high- capacity, heavy-duty LG Wave Force washer. I started with 2 cups for a full load (this detergent is not thick — actually it is quite thin and watery). MODERATELY CONFUSED KIT ’N’ CARLYLE HERMAN However, I noticed that clothes were ending up slightly stiff and scratchy, a good indication that the soap had not been rinsed out. So I cut back and found that with my con- verted 3-gallon recipe, 1 to 1 1 ⁄2 cups works perfectly. For smaller loads, I cut back accordingly. I am over the moon about this recipe because it is fast, easy and super- effective. You can email Mary at mary@everydaycheap- skate.com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, P.O. The incident raises new questions about security in Rio, which has cracked down on once-endemic drug vio- lence in preparation for host- ing next year’s football World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic games. The police statement said the suspects forced other passengers to get out of the van and then sexually assaulted the female tourist inside the vehicle, which was one of a fleet of vans that serve bus routes and seat about a dozen people. During the alleged assault, the tourists were driven to the poor suburban neighbor- hood of Sao Goncalo, where the two suspects were appre- hended, the statement said. Cancer death ignites Israel prison unrest JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli prison guards fired tear gas today to quell disturbances in cell blocks after Palestinian prisoners protested following the news of a fellow inmate’s death of cancer, an Israeli official said. Palestinian officials accused Israel of not provid- ing adequate medical care for Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh, who died earlier today. The 64- year-old was serving a life sentence for his role in a foiled attempt to bomb a busy cafe in Jerusalem in 2002. Prisons Authority spokes- woman Sivan Weizman said Abu Hamdiyeh was treated well by specialist doctors and died in a hospital in Beersheba. Weizman said the prison service had asked the parole board for the prisoner’s early release after his cancer was diagnosed as terminal last week, but that the appeal was still in process at the time of his death. Following the announce- ment of Abu Hamdiyeh’s death, Palestinian prisoners in several jails began banging on their cell doors and hurl- ing objects. Weizman said three pris- oners and six guards were evacuated for medical treat- ment after inhaling the tear gas today. Serb leader pursues deal with Kosovo BRUSSELS (AP) — The leaders of Serbia and Kosovo negotiated today on one of the most difficult issues dividing them, as Serbia strains to meet conditions for eventual membership in the European Union. Talks between the prime ministers of the two coun- tries have reached a “deci- sive stage” as the two focus on the thorny issue of the status of Serb-dominated northern Kosovo, an EU offi- cial said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss closed-door talks. The talks — the eighth face-to-face session between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci — are being held under the media- tion of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. “Today is a historical day,” said Thaci as he entered Ash- ton’s office building this morning to begin the talks. “It is a decisive moment for Kosovo and for the region.”

EUGENE — Willamette scored a run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge visiting Marshfield 3-2 in the two teams’ Midwestern League softball open- er Monday. The Pirates led 2-0 after Katelyn Rossback singled to drive in Jade Chavez in the top of the fifth inning. The same combina- tion also produced Marshfield’s other run in the third. But Willamette got two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Marshfield dropped a routine fly ball with two outs. Then the Wolverines scored the winning run on another error in the sev- enth. The girl who scored the run was barely safe at first earlier in the inning, Marshfield coach Floyd Montiel said.
