The Robert Burns Fellowship 2019
THE ROBERT BURNS FELLOWSHIP 2019 The Fellowship was established in 1958 by a group of citizens, who wished to remain anonymous, to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Burns and to perpetuate appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the early settlement of Otago by the Burns family. The general purpose of the Fellowship is to encourage and promote imaginative New Zealand literature and to associate writers thereof with the University. It is attached to the Department of English and Linguistics of the University. CONDITIONS OF AWARD 1. The Fellowship shall be open to writers of imaginative literature, including poetry, drama, fiction, autobiography, biography, essays or literary criticism, who are normally resident in New Zealand or who, for the time being, are residing overseas and who in the opinion of the Selection Committee have established by published work or otherwise that they are a serious writer likely to continue writing and to benefit from the Fellowship. 2. Applicants for the Fellowship need not possess a university degree or diploma or any other educational or professional qualification nor belong to any association or organisation of writers. As between candidates of comparable merit, preference shall be given to applicants under forty years of age at the time of selection. The Fellowship shall not normally be awarded to a person who is a full time teacher at any University. 3. Normally one Fellowship shall be awarded annually and normally for a term of one year, but may be awarded for a shorter period. The Fellowship may be extended for a further term of up to one year, provided that no Fellow shall hold the Fellowship for more than two years continuously.

An easy win for Eleanor. So what happens? Does Dame Fiona Kidman puberty bring a poetry bypass? To be fair, I cringe when I revisit most of the Vincent O’Sullivan teenage poems I wrote, but it was a great outlet at the time. Last year I spent some interesting weeks teaching poetry at high schools. On behalf of both Prize of the 2018 Melbourne Rare Book ANZAAB and RBM, I thank all the 25 MRBW partners, and their Fair. The prize of $500 redeemable with speakers, for staging 45 wonderful events which included lectures, any ANZAAB member. A full report of the exhibitions, workshops, musical performances, presentations and Fair can be found starting on p. 21 inside. discussions. It is very pleasing to see that MRBW is drawing interstate visitors and has become a noteworthy event in the Melbourne literary calendar. I am also grateful to the many MRBW sponsors who have once again supported us by opening their premises and giving freely of their time and energy to assist in making MRBW so enjoyable. This Newsletter overviews the program, including the Book Fair. I give a special thank you to Professor Chris Browne and artist Alissa Duke who attended the vast majority of the events. Chris’s reports and Alissa’s sketches are included in this Newsletter. The Book Fair was once again held in The University of Melbourne’s Wilson Hall, preceded by an opening cocktail party hosted by Ms Gwenda Thomas, the recently appointed University Librarian. An annotated bibliography for a City of Literature by Genevieve Kate Scanlan Submitted to the School of Information Management, Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Information Studies June 2019 Abstract This annotated bibliography lists books published by Dunedin authors or publishers since the city received its UNESCO City of Literature designation in 2014. Due to UNESCO’s deliberately broad and inclusive focus, the bibliography includes works from broad range of genres, forms, and target-audiences. Citations and summative annotations are provided for all 67 items in the bibliography, which are arranged into the broad categories ‘Picture Books’, ‘Children’s Fiction’, ‘Young Adult Fiction’, ‘Adult Fiction’, ‘Poetry’, ‘Non-Fiction’, and ‘Anthologies/Magazines’. The appended indices also allow users access by keyword, author, and similar relevant criteria. Using the UNESCO City of Literature vision and aims as a guide, this project considers to what extent Dunedin’s literary culture has flourished since receiving UNESCO designation. Mothers’ Darlings of the South Pacific traces some of the intimate relationships that developed between US servicemen and indigenous women in the major US bases from Bora Bora in the east to the Solomon Islands in the west, and from the Gilbert Islands in the north to New Zealand. The American military applied US immigration law based on race to prevent marriage ‘across the colour line’. For indigenous women and their American servicemen sweethearts, legal marriage was impossible, resulting in a generation of children known as ‘GI babies’.

HISTORIC LIBRARIES FORUM BULLETIN NO. 42 SEPTEMBER 2018 As is traditional, this autumn bulletin marks the opening of booking for our annual meeting and conference: “Any other duties as required” will be hosted by Christ Church, Oxford on Monday 12th November. The full schedule and booking form are available at the end of the bulletin. As you will see from the schedule, our organisers Emma Milnes and Steven Archer have put together a fantastic schedule covering some of the additional duties those working in historic libraries find themselves facing, ranging from looking after artworks and managing project budgets, to valuing your collections and complying with legislation. Lunch will be provided in the fabulous Christ Church Hall, and there will also be the opportunity for a tour of the library and its exhibition. Following a recruitment drive in the previous bulletin, I am delighted to welcome Jessica Hudson (Lambeth Palace Library) and Danielle Westerhof (Palace Green Library, University of Durham) to the HLF committee. Many thanks also to those of you who offered up venues for future HLF meetings and tours. This is an excellent way to get involved with the HLF if you do not wish to commit to a committee role. We are always very happy to hear ideas about any future events you would like to host, or simply to attend so please do continue to keep in touch. PART(S) (W)HOLE: Manifestations of Shame in Lesbian Poetry from Ireland and New Zealand since 1982 By Emer Lyons A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Otago December 2020 abstract This creative/critical PhD examines the work of lesbian poets from Ireland and Aotearoa/New Zealand in order to demonstrate the creative energy made possible by their shared experience of and response to shame. The creative part of the PhD comprises a poetry collection, Small Town Quare, and a solo piece of poet’s theatre, Catlicks. In these creative works, I reflect on and respond to my own experiences of shame as an Irish-New Zealand lesbian poet. The critical part of the thesis pinpoints how four other lesbian poets, two each from Ireland and Aotearoa/New Zealand, explore and respond to shame in their work. I argue against universalist readings of their poetry and, instead, show the importance of attending to their particular lesbian experiences of and responses to shame. While Mary Dorcey’s work has been read in universalizing ways, I show how she writes against normative notions of the lyric tradition and strives to find a place for her antinormative desires in poetry. Her poetry is therefore most fruitfully read for its engagement with the particularities of lesbian experience, including those of shame. Similarly, I read Heather McPherson’s poetry for the experience of shame that hides under the cover of her rage, which is politicised by her lesbian feminist reorientation and bolstered by a community of like-minded women.
