Evidence requirements for this unit

Learners will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and/or skills across all outcomes by showing that they can:

Outcome 1

Research a variety of body painting looks and produce a portfolio of evidence to include the following:

 Inspirational images of body painting looks to include: — full body looks — full upper body looks — body painting looks incorporating face, head, hands and feet — fantasy looks — fashion looks  Body painting products and equipment  Current application techniques to include: — freehand — airbrushing  Risk management and contra-indications  Product removal and client aftercare  Bibliography

The gathered research must contain images of body painting looks created using both freehand and airbrushing techniques and include a minimum of ten inspirational images: five fantasy looks and five fashion looks. The portfolio can be submitted in digital or hard copy format and must contain an appropriately referenced bibliography.

Outcome 2

Produce design plans for two body painting looks: one full body look and one full upper body look. Of the two looks one should be a fantasy look and one should be a fashion look.

The following criteria must be incorporated at least once:

 current freehand application techniques  current airbrushing techniques  finished look to include the face and/or head  finished look to include the hands and/or feet

The following criteria must be included within both design plans:

 risk management and contra-indications  model preparation  products and equipment  manufacturer’s guidelines  product removal and model aftercare

J1N4 34, Body Painting Skills for Make-up Artists (SCQF level 7) 4 Higher National Unit Specification: Statement of standards (cont)

Unit title: Body Painting Skills for Make-up Artists (SCQF level 7)

Learners must include evidence which demonstrates an understanding of the psychological, physiological and environmental impact on a body painting model. Risk management should include sensitivity tests being carried out on models for all relevant products. The outcome and any identified contra-indications should be documented prior to any practical activity taking place.

The completed design plans must be submitted, and feedback given prior to the practical performance taking place. The plans can be submitted in digital or hard copy format.

Outcome 3

Perform two body painting looks: one full body look and one full upper body look. Of the two looks one should be a fantasy look and one should be a fashion look.

The following criteria must be incorporated at least once:

 current freehand application techniques  current airbrushing techniques  finished look to include the face and/or head  finished look to include the hands and/or feet

The following criteria must be included within both practical performances:

 carry out risk management and record any identified contra-indications  appropriate model preparation  appropriate use of products and equipment  adhere to manufacturer’s guidelines  carry out product removal and provide model aftercare

Learners must present digital or photographic images of their finished look showing front and back images.

Higher National Unit Support Notes

Unit title: Body Painting Skills for Make-up Artists (SCQF level 7)

Unit support notes are offered as guidance and are not mandatory.

While the exact time allocated to this unit is at the discretion of the centre, the notional design length is 40 hours.

Guidance on the content and context for this unit

The purpose of this unit is to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in body painting through research, design planning and application. Learners will research a variety of body painting techniques to include freehand and airbrushing and produce design plans which show a high level of creativity and imagination. Learners will carry out the planned body paining designs on live models and produce industry standard finished looks. This unit is ideal for learners following a career in the make-up artistry industry.

The learner will develop practical skills in transferring body painting designs to models. The learner will plan and design two body painting looks to: full body, full upper body.

Guidance on approaches to delivery of this unit

Group discussions should be used to ensure learners are aware of the pre-requirements regarding the screening and informed consent for the models used for body painting and airbrushing. These issues must be raised prior to the recruitment of models/subjects. The delivery of this unit should include a strong emphasis on demonstration of safe and hygienic practice in the application of body painting and airbrushing.

To support this, the following strong recommendations are suggested for operational considerations in a training environment.

 The recruitment of models/subjects must follow current legislation relating to the Protection of Vulnerable Groups and implemented by centres.  If the design dictates that no top garments are deemed appropriate for the body painting and/or airbrushing of a model, nipple shields can be worn for .  Any style of underwear may be worn by the model (boxers, thongs, briefs) during body painting and airbrushing.  Consent forms explaining how photographic images of models may be used/displayed should be clear and concise.

It is advisable that an information sheet, detailing these recommendations, is made available and issued to prospective models/subjects.

Guidance on approaches to assessment of this unit

Evidence can be generated using different types of assessment. The following are suggestions only. There may be other methods that would be more suitable to learners.

Centres are reminded that prior verification of centre-devised assessments would help to ensure that the national standard is being met. Where learners experience a range of assessment methods, this helps them to develop different skills that should be transferable to work or further and higher education.

Outcome 1 is an independent research task. Learners should be provided with task instructions and a date for submission. Research may be gathered from a variety of sources including, library, trade journals/publications, Pinterest, internet, photographs, magazines and books. Learner should present their evidence in a portfolio which can be submitted in digital or hard copy format and must contain an appropriately referenced bibliography. This outcome should be delivered and assessed prior to the assessment of Outcome 2.

Outcome 2 is a planning task where learners are required to interpret given briefs and use inspiration from the gathered research to create design plans for two body painting looks. The designs plans should be submitted and feedback given prior to the assessment of Outcome 3.

Outcome 3 is a practical performance task. Learners are required to carry out the two planned looks to include appropriate risk management, product removal and aftercare advice. Both practical performances must take place under assessment conditions and the outcome of the assessment recorded by the assessor on an observation checklist. Learners must present digital or photographic images of their finished looks showing front and back images.

Outcomes 2 and 3 will be assessed holistically through the completion of both practical assessments. Learners should be set a commercially acceptable time for completion of each practical assessment.

Opportunities for e-assessment

E-assessment may be appropriate for some assessments in this unit. By e-assessment we mean assessment which is supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT), such as e-testing or the use of e-portfolios or social software. Centres that wish to use e-assessment must ensure that the national standard is applied to all learner evidence and that conditions of assessment as specified in the Evidence Requirements are met, regardless of the mode of gathering evidence. The most up-to-date guidance on the use of e-assessment to support SQA’s qualifications is available at www.sqa.org.uk/e-assessment.

Opportunities for developing Core and other essential skills

This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop the Core Skills, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at SCQF level 5 and Problem Solving and SCQF level 6.

The use of ICT to assist with research, review, planning may provide opportunities to develop aspects of ICT at SCQF level 5 by demonstrating that they can use IT systems to process a range of information.

Problem Solving involves three distinct component activities — Critical Thinking, Planning and Organising. Critical Thinking should be employed to interpret design briefs or identified tasks within the unit, with Planning and Organisation required to set objectives, timelines and produce the finished body painting looks.

Learners should be encouraged to use appropriate communication skills (listening skills, verbal and non-verbal communication skills) during interactions with models.

The Critical Thinking and Planning and Organising components of Problem Solving at SCQF level 5 are embedded in this unit. When a learner achieves these units, their Core Skills profile will also be updated to include these components.
