Plusieurs enceintes sportives sont baptis'es - son nom, comme le stade Jean-Bouin - Paris. Key Facts Club: Olympique de Marseille Opening: 1937 Capacity: 67,000 Places History and Description of the Orange Velodrome, better known as the Stud Velodrome, was built to serve as a playing venue for the 1938 World Championships. Soon after it became the new home of Olympique de Marseille after the Stade de L'Huveaune became too small for the club. The Velodrome stadium officially opened on June 13, 1937 with a friendly match between Marseille and Torino in Italy. During the 1938 World Cup, the stadium hosted one first-round match and a semi-final between Italy and Brazil (2-1). The stadium originally had a bike path, as well as a treadmill circling around the field. It was bowl-shaped and both long sides were covering. The stadium remained virtually unchanged for the following decades, although the tracks were gradually eaten up by the expansion of the stands. The Velodrome Stadium received its first reconstruction in preparation for the Euro 1984 championship, during which the first round of the group stage match and the semifinal match between France and Portugal (3-2) took place. The stadium was almost completely rebuilt for the 1998 World Cup, and it was then that the stadium received characteristic round stands. Capacity has increased to about 60,000 seats, although the new stadium has also been criticized for lack of coverage. During the World Cup, Stade Velodrome played four group stage matches, a round 16 match, a quarter-final and a semi-final between Brazil and Holland (1-1). New redevelopment plans were unveiled after France won the Euro 2016 tournament. The works included the almost complete reconstruction of the two main stands, minor work in the stands at both ends, and the construction of a roof that would cover the full stadium, resulting in an increase in capacity of an additional 7,000 seats. The reconstruction was completed in the summer of 2014. At Euro 2016, Stade Velodrome played four matches in the first round of the group stage: the quarter-final between Portugal and Poland (1:1) and the semi-final between France and Germany (2-0). In 2016, the stadium was renamed Orange Velodrome after a sponsorship deal with the telecommunications firm Orange. (photo of this stadium Velodrome below) How to get to the Orange Velodrome Orange Velodrome is located in the south of the city of Marseille, about 3.5 km from the center of Marseille and a kilometer more from the central train station of Saint-Charles. The stadium can be reached by Metro Line 2. Catch the metro south at St. Charles train station or another stop in the city centre (such as Noailles), and exit Rond Point du Prado or St. Marguerite Dromel (both on opposite sides of the Velodrome Stadium). If from the old port area, you can catch metro line 1 and change at Castellan station to Line 2. A map of the metro network can be found here. If you can also walk from the old port area to the Velodrome Stadium, which will take 30-45 minutes. Find your way to Rue de Rome, a few blocks inland, and turn south. Rue de Rome turns into a wide Avenue de Prado, which brings you in one queue to the stadium. It's a nice walk. Marseille has a good rail link with the rest of France. There are frequent direct TGV trains from, for example, Paris, Lyon and Nice. The trip from Paris takes about 3.5 hours. Train tickets can be booked in advance through the official SNCF website. Marseille also has its own airport, Marseille Provence Airport, which has good connections as well as being serviced by low-cost airlines. The airport is located 25 km northwest of the center of Marseille, on the other hand than the Stud Velodrome, so take the bus to the train station of Saint-Charles first and make your way to the stadium from there. Address: 3 Boulevard Michelet, 13008 Marseille Eat, drink, and near sleep Stade Velodrome Orange Velodrome is located in a rather rather rather maligned residential area. There are several food and drink options around, most notably on Avenue du Prado towards the city centre. In the centre of the city, the old port district (Vieux Port) is a place to eat and drink. There are a reasonable number of hotels in the vicinity of the Velodrome stadium. Mercure Marcel Prado, Inter-Hotel Parc des Expositions, and Citadines Prado Chanot Marseille all get good reviews and are just a 5-10 minute walk from the stadium. Le Huiti'me is a more budget-based alternative. Novotel on Avenue du Prado is a little further away, but still an easy walk, while closer to the center. If you want to stay near the coast (and the beach), the Adagio Prado Plage residence can be interesting for you. Most will decide to stay in the old port area though, or a little further south near Castellan with both the stadium and the city centre a short walk away. Click here for all the hotels near the Velodrome Stadium, and here to explore further options in the centre of Marseille. Tickets to Marseille tickets for marseille games can be purchased online (the official website is operated through Digitick), at the box office at the stadium, or at the official OM store at 31 Rue Saint-Ferreol in the city centre. In addition, they can be bought at any of the outlets Francebillet, Ticketnet or Digitick. Ticket prices may depend on the match, but expect to pay from 10.00 euros per seat at the gate to between 20.00 and 55.00 euros for a seat at one of the parties. Prices for high-profile games are usually slightly higher, but tickets are on a low profile such as the Europa League can go for even cheaper. For more information call (0) 892 700 840. Orange Velodrome Stadium tours the Marseille Tourist Office organizes tours of the stadium that include access to the changing rooms, press center, grandstands, and tunnel players. • The Realised Economic Impact of the 2011 Rugby World Cup – a Host City Analysis
THE REALISED ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE 2011 RUGBY WORLD CUP – A HOST CITY ANALYSIS Sam Richardson1 School of Economics and Finance College of Business Massey University Palmerston North New Zealand Brown Bag Seminar, December 2012 (Work in Progress) Abstract The 2011 Rugby World Cup, hosted by New Zealand, was projected to make an operational loss of NZ$39.3 million, of which taxpayers were to foot two‐thirds of the bill. This was in contrast to profits of A$48 million for the 2003 tournament in Australia and €30 million for the 2007 tournament in France. Part of the justification for incurring these losses was an expectation of significant economic benefits arising from the hosting of the tournament. This paper estimates the realised economic impact on host cities during the 2011 tournament. Estimates show that the aggregated realised impact was approximately 25% of pre‐event projections and the impacts were unevenly distributed across host cities. 1 E‐Mail: [email protected]; Telephone: +64 6 3569099 ext. 4583; Fax: +64 6 350 5660. 1 1. INTRODUCTION The 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) was hosted in New Zealand, and is the largest sporting event held in this country to date. One of the selling points of the successful bid for the tournament in 2005 was that the country was described as a “stadium of four million”, which subsequently became the catchphrase synonymous with the event. In all, 48 matches were played in 12 cities during September and October 2011, while other cities also acted as bases for the 20 competing teams throughout their stay.
