The following document lists most of the common concerns that you may have when you get to IIT Kanpur. Please take a printout of this document and carry it with you, so you can use it if necessary.
Getting to IIT Kanpur: Arrival by Train: There will be no pick-up/drop-off from/to Kanpur Central railway station. It is possible to hire taxis (about Rs. 250) and autorickshaws(about Rs.150) to IIT Kanpur from the station. Ask Taxi or autorickshaws to go directly to IIT Kanpur. When you ge to the security gate, you will be stopped by the security person. Tell the person that you are here for the Theoretical Chemistry Symposium. Once inside campus, go directly to your place of accommodation.
Arrival by AIR: If you have not requested pick-up, you can hire taxis at the airport. The typical cost will be between Rs. 1000 and Rs. 1600, depending on the vehicle used. If you have requested pick-up at the airport, please walk out of the airport and locate the taxi driver. The taxi driver will be waiting in front of the main exit with a placard bearing your name, and will bring you to IIT campus. You may have to wait for some time and share the taxi with other participants. Once inside campus, go directly to your place of accommodation. Each place of accommodation has a reception desk/office, and they will be able to guide you regarding your rooms. The different accommodations are at a significant distance from each other, so please make sure that the taxi waits until your accommodation is confirmed. If you have requested transportation, please check the website for the list of transportation requests and find your name. If your name is not on that list, contact one of the transportation coordinators immediately.
Accommodation: Faculty Participants: Your accommodation details are put up on the website. Faculty participants will be staying at one of the three accommodations given below. ● Visitor Hostel (VH) ● Visiting Faculty Apartments(VFA) ● Visitor Hostel Extention - Type 1 Apts (VH Extn) Go to the reception in your place of accommodation and get the keys to your room.
Students/Post-docs: Male participants will be housed in student hall of residence HALL 5 Female student participants will be housed in Girls Hostel GH1 Bedding will be placed to your room starting 7th & 8th. This consists of a blanket, a bedsheet and a pillow with cover. But please carry extra bedsheets, blankets & pillow covers, mosquito repellants etc. as you need. Go directly to the Hall office located within your hall and get the keys to your room.
Weather at IIT Kanpur is quite cold. Please carry sweater, jacket, socks, cap, shoes etc. as needed. Food: Lunch and Dinner: From 8th Lunch to 12th Lunch, all participants will take lunch and dinner at the Main Auditorium lawns. For breakfast and other meals, the arrangements are given below.
Other meals for Faculty Participants: All Faculty participants will take their breakfast at the Visitor Hostel Dining Hall. Participants staying at VFA and VH Extention will have to go to the Visitor Hostel to take breakfast every day. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the Visiting Faculty Apartments to the VH and about 15 minutes from the Visitor Hostel Annexe to the VH. There will be cars arranged to take people staying in VH Extension to the VH at 7:30 every morning. Faculty participants who arrive before 8th or stay on after 12th, can also take meals at the dining hall of the Visitor Hostel. In such cases, the VH dining room staff need to be informed in advance, so please take care of that.
Other meals for Student Paricipants: Male participants staying at Hall 5 will take breakfast at Hall 2 mess (next to Hall 5). You will be given 4 breakfast coupons at the registration desk which can be used for each day from 9-12 December. Please give one coupon to the mess manager of Hall2 before taking your breakfast each day. Female participants (staying at GH 1) will take their breakfast at GH 1 mess. There are no coupons for this. Student participants have to manage their meals on 7th and their breakfast on 8th and all meals from 12th diner on their own. It is possible to get good meals at reasonable prices in any of the halls or the various canteens on campus or go out to Kanpur city for meals. We will provide you necessary assistance at the help desk.
Venue of Conference: All academic sessions will be in the Main Auditorium. The main auditorium is only about 5 minutes walk from the Visitor Hostel. No transportation will be provided from the VH to the main auditorium. Poster session will also be in Main Auditorium. More details on posters will be given to you at the conference.
Registration: The registration desk will be located in the Main Auditorium and will be open from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm on 8th & from 8:am onwards on 9th. The registration desk will be open throughout the conference for all assistance necessary.
Internet Access: Most areas of IIT Kanpur are connected to the internet through Wireless internet. In order to access the internet, you need to set the proxy with a login and password. The login and password information is present in your registration bag. You need to set proxy settings on your browser, as illustrated below for Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
