If I go out of state, I would go to the University of Michigan,” Williams said. Williams is currently leaning toward pursing a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering. “I have taken two years of chemistry, and I have one more year of it. Chemistry just comes naturally to me,” Williams said. According to Williams, he has always had an interest in science, which was encouraged by his parents. “I remember when I was small, I always got up in the mornings and watched The Science Channel – almost religiously,” he laughed, adding, “My parents steered me toward a career in engineering, architecture or the medical field. They are both in STEM-type jobs. My dad deals with mechanical stuff, and my mom deals with numbers all day.” Williams also divides his time between participating in the TCHS band, for which he is the assistant drum major, and volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club. “I have about 250 volunteer hours with the Boys and Girls Club. I really enjoy it because I get to talk with the kids about science and introduce them to it,” Williams said. Williams will also begin volunteering with the AmeriCorps in August, and he plans to spend his senior year helping as many students as possible explore the world of science. According to the Department of Education, Williams was selected based on his future career goals and his intention to pursue a higher education. “Florida is home to many talented students, but none shine brighter than the Sunshine State Scholars,” said Marshall M. Let Freedom Ring!

Decked out in red, white and blue, thousands gathered in Steinhatchee to celebrate Independence Day on Sunday, July 4th. Scattered showers and menacing skies could did not dampen the celebratory mood among the gathering crowd counting down toward the fireworks spectacular finale. As the evening progressed, golf carts and vehicles lined the Reed Memorial Bridge between Steinhatchee and Jena to secure the best vantage spots. Just before 9 p.m., a barge fully loaded with fireworks was pulled into place. From somewhere on the bridge, patriotic songs rang out celebrating the red, white and blue. As the rockets burst into the air, the clouds let go and sent light sprinkles down on the spectators. However, tit would take more than a little rain to dampen the crowd’s spirits. As the last crack and boom rang out from the firework’s grand finale, a loud roar rose up from those gathered below in celebration of America’s 245th birthday. (Photos by Jessica Moore.)
