  • Performance Nutrition Eat for Your Sport
Performance Nutrition Eat For Your Sport Your Sport Hockey is characterised by high intensity passages of play, mixed with low intensity activities, including standing, walking, jogging. Hockey players rely on instant sources of muscle fuel during short bursts of play. For longer phases of play, or “recovery” in between activities, your body will rely more on a mixture of fuels to support your ability to continue in the game, or practice session. Nutrition can have a significant effect on your hockey performance. Your ability to run to a ball a number of times in short bursts, stick and ball control, decision making or shot stopping are all key performance tasks that nutrition has been shown to affect. Unlike conditioning there is no “nutritional age” as such, but there will be things that are important to support your phase of development growth, as well as boost performance. Training Diet Traditionally many hockey players have focussed on improving their nutrition towards the weekend game. However, the daily demands of your busy lifestyle either from school, college or work as well, as training, will limit your hockey performance practice if you don’t get your nutrition consistently right. Hockey players require a variety of foods and should aim to include: Fruits and green vegetables every day in any form e.g. cooked separately or on pizza toppings Breads and cereals – pasta, brown rice, oats, potatoes, noodles, lentils, couscous Low fat dairy products – including milk, yogurt and cheese Lean meat – chicken, game e.g. rabbit, pigeon, fish, eggs and other more vegetarian forms of protein such as pulses e.g.

LEADING THE FIELD THE STORY OF SPORT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM MATT COLE The University of Birmingham has invested its aspirations and its resources in sport from the opening of the university to the present day. Whether for the recreation, education and health of its staff, students and the public, or for the development of some of Britain’s sporting pioneers, the University has recognised the integral role of sport in its work. The investment has paid dividends for over a century now in Birmingham’s role in the development of sporting participation, expertise and influence. Sir Oliver Lodge was interrupted on the golf links to be recruited by Joseph Chamberlain as Birmingham University’s first Principal. • News of the Carlton Tavern
Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club Newsletter January 2017 Keeping Vice Presidents and Friends in the know Welcome This is the eighteenth in our series of Newsletters. It marks a new scheme of trying to provide more relevant news quicker by reporting during the mid-season break in the National League calendar. It may be briefer but will be followed by an end of season edition as customary, although that, too, may have less content, for hopefully obvious reasons. Executive Summary The Club is in good heart, with both first teams well placed in their Leagues, the Women seemingly able to avoid the post promotion effect and able to maintain their showing of last season as newcomers. The Men have seen the hard work of pre-season reap rewards. A new team has evolved in quick time and has enjoyed success not seen in recent seasons and are well-placed at just more than the half way stage. Up to 14 January 2017, in the London League the Men’s 2nd XI and 3rd XI are leaders in the Premier Division and Division 1, respectively. Zak Hond XI are in ninth spot in the same League Division 1. The 4th XI are in tenth position in London League Division 2. In Division 3, the 5th XI are league leaders, with nine wins and three losses, a point ahead of London Wayfarers. In Division 5, the Hammers XI are in fifth place. Division 6 has two H&W teams: the Spaniards XI are fourth and the Thirsts XI are fifth. The Vets sit top of Veterans Division One, with nine wins and three losses but the Supervets are struggling a little, being seventh of eight in Supevets Division 1, helped by a win on 7 January 2017 against Chelmsford.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE University of Birmingham Students
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE University of Birmingham students and alumni selected for Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Six students and eighteen alumni have been selected for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, across a broad range of sports and representative nations. For some it will be their debut Commonwealth Games experience, whilst others are continuing their successes from Glasgow. Representing Team England in the 1500m, sports scholar Sarah McDonald is also a fourth-year medical student, taking time off from her demanding academic schedule to concentrate on her first Commonwealth Games. She secured her place after reaching the semi-finals at the August 2017 IAAF World Championships, and in February this year smashed her indoor personal best by four seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, which saw her rise up the ranks from 26th on the indoor women’s rankings to 9th in the world. Sarah said about her selection: ‘I’ve wanted to go to a major games since I started in the sport - so I’m really excited about going and experiencing a multi-sport championship and being with the whole team in the athlete village. I’ve never been to Australia either so I’m very excited about that!’ Also taking on her first Commonwealth Games for England is 3000m Steeplechaser and alumni, Iona Lake, who qualified for the team back in 2017 when she competed in Zagreb and achieved a lifetime best of 09.39.03 - six seconds inside the Games qualifying time. Birmingham-based Bethan Partridge, the Birchfield Harriers’ highjumper who graduated with a Sport, Physical Education and Coaching Sciences degree in 2013, is returning to the competition, following an 8th place in the qualifying rounds at Glasgow 2014.
