The series, which debuts on Bleacher Report across its B/R Football channels at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 19, shines a spotlight on developing the next generation of soccer stars as they work to join the ranks of MLS professional athletes. Featuring Sporting Kansas City and made possible by Audi, "THE ACADEMY" provides an all-access look at the commitments and sacrifices that young athletes make to become professional soccer players. Highlighting the youth talent development system used by every MLS youth Academy in North America, the five-part series gives fans a first-hand account of how MLS youth Academies and Audi are working to ensure the next generation of athletes is ready to compete at an elite level. A program funded by Audi – Audi Goals Drive Progress—allows MLS Academies to support youth players by removing barriers that would otherwise impede success, such as limited access to transportation. These funds also support players’ educations to ensure their success off the field. “Audi’s commitment to MLS has always focused on advancing the game of soccer in North America, so we thought it was important to put a personal face on that commitment by showcasing these young players and their experiences,” said Shawna Burtscher, director of Experiential Marketing, Audi of America. “We think of 'THE ACADEMY' as a much-needed source of inspiration to soccer fans everywhere. 1/2 The documentary series will provide a detailed look at tactical meetings, closed training sessions, and how Sporting Kansas City’s Academy managed the transition to remote and virtual trainings, as well as season delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is the first look that any fans will have at one of the most respected soccer academies in the U.S. and a chance to catch a glimpse of who could be tomorrow’s greatest stars,” said Raphael Poplock, SVP of New Business Development, Bleacher Report. “We faced a unique challenge to create a very personal documentary from remote and social distanced settings during this period and think we have captured exceptional stories from the Sporting Kansas City’s Academy player’s journey.” Prominent Sporting Kansas City personalities are featured in the episodes, including Sporting Kansas City Manager and Sporting Director Peter Vermes, Academy coach Rumbani Munthali, Homegrown midfielder Gianluca Busio, along with Academy players Gage Akalu, Nati Clarke, Osvaldo Cisneros, and Jake Davis. “The Sporting Kansas City Academy is a core part of our club, and receiving this tremendous support from Audi helps us with so much, including housing and transportation within our Academy,” said Peter Vermes, Sporting Kansas City Manager & Sporting Director. “Our focus will continue to be placed on having a clear and productive pro-pathway from the Academy to the first team, and the Audi Goals Drive Progress initiative helps us immensely in achieving that goal.” As of April 2020, Audi has committed more than $1 million dollars to MLS Academies across North America, and the impact of this funding has been immediate – since March 2020, ten MLS Academy players who benefitted from the program have been signed to First team, Homegrown pro contracts. “Audi’s progressive vision to support MLS Academies and foster elite player development is truly innovative,” said Todd Durbin, executive vice president of Competition & Player Relations, MLS. “Audi is positively impacting the next generation of soccer players through the ‘Audi Goals Drive Progress’ program. Their commitment advancing the game is elevating the level of the MLS club player development programs and bringing the best players to our fans.” For more information on "THE ACADEMY", visit BleacherReport.com and MLSsoccer.com. PHILADELPHIA SOCCER HISTORY / US OPEN CUP Philly and the US Open Cup Final Posted by Ed Farnsworth on August 13, 2014 at 12:15 pm Featured image: The Bethlehem Steel FC victory float after winning their second US Open Cup, then known as the National Challenge Cup, on May 6, 1916. (Photo: University Archives & Special Collections Department, Lovejoy Library, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) Philadelphia teams, both amateur and professional, have a long history of appearances in the final of America’s oldest soccer competition, winning the US Open Cup ten times. The last Philadelphia team to do so was the Ukrainian Nationals in 1966. At PPL Park on Sept. 16 at 7:30 pm, the Philadelphia Union will look to restart that winning tradition. Before the US Open Cup Before the founding of the US Open Cup in the 1913–1914 season, the claim for a national soccer title was held by the American Cup competition, also known as the American Football Association Cup and the American Federation Cup. First organized by the American Football Association in 1885, the competition primarily featured teams from the early American soccer triangle of Northern New Jersey, Southern New York and lower New England. In 1897, the John A. Manz team became the first Philadelphia club to win the American Cup. Tacony won in 1910 with Philadelphia Hibernian losing in the final the following year. In 1914, Bethlehem Steel FC won the first of its six American Cup titles by beating Tacony, who had also lost to Northern New Jersey’s Paterson True Blues in the final the year before.

Sporting KC Gets an Assist from SeatGeek: Can Sporting KC Score? Prepared for the 2017 National Sports Forum Case Cup Competition Written by: Jan Owens, Carthage College Deborah Cowles, Virginia Commonwealth University Matt Sauber, Eastern Michigan University Sporting KC Gets an Assist from SeatGeek Can Sporting KC Score? Executive Summary Sporting KC is an American professional soccer club based in the greater Kansas City metro area with the actual matches played at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Beginning in 2017, the club will sell tickets through SeatGeek, an online ticket platform as its primary ticketing distributor. Jake Reid, Sporting KC’s President, sees this relationship as the next generation of online ticket sales. As the popularity of professional soccer expands, Millennials will become the largest demographic segment of sports fans. Moreover, as consumers increasingly make purchases in a digital -- largely mobile -- environment, Sporting KC expects the SeatGeek relationship to be a strategic partnership for growth and profitability for both entities. Now, the challenge is for you, as Sporting KC’s marketing team, to take advantage of SeatGeek’s – and the team’s – strengths and to ride the momentum of positive trends. The Case Study The Scene Sporting Kansas City President Jake Reid 1 leaned back in his desk chair, elated yet aware of new challenges. It had just been announced “that ticketing industry leader SeatGeek will become the club’s official ticketing partner starting in 2017”.2 This was an outcome of a ground-breaking multi-year initiative between SeatGeek and Major League Soccer (MLS), which made SeatGeek the official ticketing partner of MLS.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions “FAQs” Proposal to Bring Major League Soccer to Portland, Oregon Prepared by the Office of Mayor Sam Adams, the Office of Commissioner Randy Leonard, Office of Management and Finance, Office of the City Attorney Updated March 10, 2009 1) Why bring major league soccer to Portland? Mayor Sam Adams: “Sports have the power to bring people together diverse groups…to inspire…to promote in the community healthy lifestyles and family- friendly opportunities…to raise a city’s profile nationally and even internationally…all the more so with a sport like soccer, the most played sport on earth…as we aspire to build the most sustainable economy in the world, we will add a community point of pride that resonates with the world in a language so much of the world speaks – the language of “futbol.” Link to full statement by Mayor Sam Adams: http://www.portlandonline.com/mayor/index.cfm?c=49519&a=234419&direct 2) Given the economic uncertainties and pending cuts to City government services why spend the time and money now to bring major league soccer to Portland? To help answer this question and others, on November 26, 2008, the City Council created the Task Force to evaluate the possibility of bringing major league soccer to Portland. The Task Force meetings were public and broadcast on television. Major league soccer is making its decision now for selecting new cities for new teams. MLS would like teams to be fielded concurrently in Vancouver, BC, Seattle and Portland. The City Council also provided the Task Force a set of Guiding Principles: http://www.portlandonline.com/omf/index.cfm?c=49495&a=227942 to shape their evaluation.
