Call For Meeting Muddies The Waters this month A Special Meeting of Council has been called to discuss the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Programme – and to direct the CEO to take all action necessary to expedite an application for funding for a swimming pool/recreation centre. The meeting, which follows a fiery discussion at last week’s Council Forum, has been called by three Councillors who raised the issue of an increase of funds in federal funding for infrastructure. Following an allegedly reluctant acceptance of the meeting request, the Special Meeting was called for the following Thursday – one day before hard copy of the grant application is Your cut out and keep due in Canberra. emergency plan, page 3 “With large federal grants being offered to local councils for projects,” said Toodyay Swimming Pool Action Committee President, Carol Plackett. “It’s disappointing to hear that, after many surveys which indicate that aquatic facilities were the most desired recreational facility, the community’s recommendations were not the Council’s highest priority. We hope that the Special Meeting will help meet the deadline.” The purpose of the meeting is: a) To discuss the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Programme – Strategic Projects 2008/2009 Grant 50s Toodyay, page 9 Application, extension of deadline and increase in available funds; and b) To move a motion directing the Chief Executive Officer to take all action necessary to expedite an application for funding for a swimming pool/aquatic facility/recreation centre for the Shire of Toodyay. Criteria for the grant include: • applications being limited only to local governments, and only one application per council; • projects being ready to go and able to proceed within six months of signing a contract; Student Council, page 10 • projects also seeking a Commonwealth contribution of at least $2 million; • councils and shires being encouraged to contribute their own funds or secure Auctioneer Nathan ‘Marty’ Martin in action at the Freemason’s Hotel Victorian partnership funds for projects; and Bushfi re Relief Fundraising Night • community organisations’ projects permitted as long as they are sponsored by a local government. THE TOODYAY HERALD March 2009 Toodyay Music Club All our singers, toting their various guitars, when and where they meet double bass, ukuleles and violin, were out in force this month, providing a terrific night’s entertainment. Allan and Leila are a powerful combination on guitar and double bass and their singing this month was really impressive. It’s hard to believe Leila has been playing the double bass for such a short time – it seems the instrument was just made for her. We welcomed Nancy back after her extended time out of town. It was good to hear the accordion again, with tunes like the ‘Christina Waltz’, and ‘Road to the Isles’. Jeanette’s contribution included her beautiful rendition of ‘If Wishes Were Fishes’ and Jan delighted us with Patsy Cline’s classic signature tune, ‘Crazy’. Great to see Kathy and Rhonda have been practising and increasing their repertoire, with a hilarious, ‘Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’, although there was apparently some disappointment that they had not dressed accordingly. They are getting better every month. I don’t think there would be any disagreement when I say that the high point of the evening was when our newest member, Shirley, performed an absolutely stunning version of ‘Summertime’. The audience was enraptured. As always, it was a pleasure to hear Frank’s version of ‘Where Do You Go to My Lovely’, then we enjoyed the blend of strumming with finger-picking when Joe joined him for ‘Streets of London’. Spencer has been successfully branching out into ‘picking’ as well, on the ukulele, which opens up a whole new world of songs to play – this month he and Teddy treated us to ‘One Day at a Time’ and ‘We’re a Long Time Dead’. The ukulele band really had the hall rocking with, ‘This Old House’. It was quite a contrast but equally enjoyable shortly after when Allan switched from this to the lovely lament he had written for his mother. Another happy and stimulating evening, with plenty more to look forward to. COUNTRY AND WESTERN NIGHT COMING ON 13th MARCH. Join us as audience or performers, and hear for yourself the amazing variety of styles and the considerable talent to be found in our club. Next Meeting: Friday 13th March. Any style of singing or instrumental performance is welcome, so long as it is ‘acoustic’. Toodyay Music Club Inc, Second Friday of each month, 7pm at the CWA Hall. For further information contact Teddy or Spencer on 9574 4492. Jenny Edgecombe Toodyay Ratepayers & Residents Association (Inc) The Toodyay Ratepayers & Residents Association (Inc) has continued to meet on a monthly basis to discuss matters of interest and importance to residents of the Shire as well as to interact on a social basis. We have changed our meeting nights to the THIRD TUESDAY of each month as this has been easier for members to attend at the CWA Hall. It has proved a good opportunity for residents to meet new people and to discuss issues that arise. Being informed is of great assistance in dealing with the Shire on a wide-ranging variety of issues. Issues dealt with recently have included the Rural Road Numbering Scheme, the disposition of funding from both State and Federal Governments, the apparent secrecy of Council Forum meetings, proposed amalgamation of our Shire with one or more other Shires and the accountability of the Shire in regard to spending ratepayer funds amongst other minor matters. Councillors are welcome to attend our meetings and we are pleased to note that some take this opportunity to interact with us in an informative and positive manner. We are always pleased to meet new, as well as long standing, members or visitors to our meetings and to get ideas and views of issues, both positive and negative from as many people as possible. Discussions take place in an amicable and friendly atmosphere, the aim being to listen to all views before reaching a decision as to the Association’s position on any matter. We look forward to old members renewing their interest and new members developing an interest. Remember, CWA Hall at 7 p.m. on the if your details need updating, email [email protected] third Tuesday of each month. See you there maybe? THE TOODYAY HERALD March 2009 Page 17. public notices
