The music video for "Hey Little One" shows an older man strumming his guitar and singing a low, slow ballad. His voice has weathered with age, but we'd know it anywhere: it's the voice of "Wichita Lineman" and "Rhinestone Cowboy," a voice that has won five Grammys, sold 45 million records, and blended country music with pop before it was cool. It's the voice of Glen Campbell. Hearing him tell his stories in song has always been a powerful experience—maybe more so now, because Campbell has Alzheimer's disease (AD). NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/Getty Images In the video (for a track from Campbell's latest album, See You There), we also see Campbell's wife of more than 30 years, Kim. She holds her husband's hand as they look out at the ocean and the horizon together. It's a poignant reminder that AD changes the lives not only of those who have the illness, but also of those who love them. A Widespread Disease Campbell is one of 5 million Americans with AD, defined by the National Institutes of Health as "an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills, and the ability to carry out simple tasks of daily living." (See "Alzheimer's Disease: The Basics" below.) AD begins with memory loss because the disease "starts in brain areas important for memory, such as the hippocampus," explains Janet Jankowiak, M.D., a geriatric neurologist and member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

As we move into 2017, it seems appropriate to take time to reflect on the successes of our year thus far and celebrate exciting events and changes to come in the new year. Good things continue to happen at Ranch View! Points of Pride: Outdoor Classroom Continues to Support Learning: Our outdoor classroom continues to provide innovative and inquiry-based learning opportunities for students throughout the winter months. Our weather station is now operational. Sensors placed on the roof send information to our office receiver which is then relayed to students via our student meteorologist report each morning. Students are observing changes in plants, animals, sun/moon locations and the effects of the water cycle on our landscape. Bricks purchased by families in the fall have been delivered and were installed when weather conditions permitted. An additional brick sale opportunity will be made available in the spring for those of you who want to leave a lasting legacy in our outdoor space. STEM Education Makes a Difference: For a second year in a row, select fourth and fifth grade students participated in the First Lego League Competition this past December. Students received recognition for their work in building and programming robots, successfully completing course challenges, presenting research related to the interdependence between humans and animals and their ability to demonstrate teamwork. All teams demonstrated GRIT during this challenging competition! Data collected via the Pear Institute/Harvard School of Education survey instrument affirmed that participation in our STEM program had significant positive impact on students’ mathematic skills, social emotional learning and self-esteem.

CELEBRATIONS: STEM Education: Once again select 4th and 5th graders participated in First Lego League. Students were challenged to think like scientists and worked in teams while attempting to solve real world problems. Through this experience teams get to: “Research challenges facing today’s scientists.” “Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology.” “Apply real-world math and science concepts.” “Learn critical thinking, team-building, and presentation skills.” “Participate in tournaments and celebrations” “Understand and practice Gracious Professionalism” We are very proud of the students who participated this year as they worked to study and present on hydro-dynamics. Presentations revolved around exploring the location, use, storage and movement of water. Information about our spring STEM program is coming soon! Social Emotional Learning: The Ranch View SEL committee created a school wide behavior matrix which clearly and positively outlines behavioral expectations for our Ranch View School community. Being that this is over 30 years, more than a few have taken on an appearance to match their age. Many of you have updated the exterior of your park models over the years. This is an important step to keep the park in tip top shape and continue to attract buyers. During the next month, I will be asking many of the rest of you to spend a few bucks to update and repair the outside of your unit. Some units will require painting, oth- ers may require changing the siding from aluminum to hardy board, others might just need to have the existing unitized trim replaced. If we both agree that the unit, in its pre- sent condition, is okay then nothing will need to be done. An official Rincon Country Authorization for Space Improvement form will need to be filled out and approved prior to any renovations taking place. The renovations and con- tractor will need to be approved by the office before any work can commence. Authori- zation Forms can be obtained in the Front Office. This is not an effort to penalize anyone, rather it is fairness to the folks who spend $70,000 or $80,000 for a new unit. We constantly upgrade our park owned units in both RCE and RCW Resorts. This coming year, nearly $300,000 is earmarked to add and update park owned units in RCE.
