Chris Lowder, Ed.D. | Cabarrus County Schools Superintendent As I reflect on what has unquestionably been a consequential, and dare I say, unprecedented year in history due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I can’t help but think of the resilience of our students and families, and the resolve of our educators, administrators and staff. Even our most unusual years in education and professionally, recognitions at state and couldn’t have predicted how swiftly the national levels and continuing our district tradition of dynamics would change in a single school year. community involvement. As much as we’ve taught and studied history as educators And although no publication can capture all that and students, we likely never dreamed we would be a occurred during a single school year – especially this part of the story. Yet, years from now, the actions we’ve one – this summary gives us a look back at the year taken, and the resiliency we’ve shown as a school and pays tribute to the inimitable spirit, the tenacious community and beyond, will light the way for future grit and the steadfast determination of our students, generations to manage through challenges with resolve. families, staff and community. • North-Carolina Ctsos
Career and Technical Student Organizations Serving Career and Technical Education Students in North Carolina 1 As a career educator for more than 30 years in North Carolina and a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) adviser for the majority of these years, I value the impact of CTSOs. DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, Skills USA and TSA provide our students multiple opportunities to network in their field. In high school I developed and excelled in the business skills that led me to choose my career path in college and career. As our students prepare themselves for their future in education or the job market, equipping them to find their career path and to be competitive in the marketplace are two of the many benefits to belonging to a CTSO. I have seen directly how CTSOs have impacted students’ lives in multiple ways. By attending local, regional, state and national events hosted by their CTSOs, our students learn to network socially and professionally and develop leadership skills necessary to succeed in their career field and life. Our goal is for each of our students to be able to compete globally in the 21st century and find gainful employment in their field. CTSOs provide positive opportunities for our students to meet these goals by building leadership, public speaking skills, technical competencies and self-confidence. In North Carolina over 104,000 work-place credentials have been earned by students enrolled in business, health science, marketing, family and consumer science, technology, agriculture, and trade and industry

CCEF Annual Report 2015-2016 2015—2016 History The brainchild of Grace Mynatt and the late Roy Davis of S&D Coffee and Tea, the Cabarrus County Education Foundation (CCEF) was established to connect students, teachers and the Cabarrus County community. As Ben Franklin stated, “ An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” And that is what CCEF does—invests in providing extraordinary opportunities for CCS students to gain knowledge and experiences that would not be funded through normal funding sources. "I support the Foundation because I believe strongly in public education in Cabarrus In the beginning, CCEF funded the Direct Instruction County. I received a superb education in our Reading Program which targeted students who were public schools as did our sons, and we have grandchildren in the school system. My non-readers or below level readers in the primary challenge to all of us who know the value of an educated mind is to support grades, as well as the school district’s Spelling Bee, the foundation." the Superintendent’s Choice Art Awards and a spring Roy Davis Jr. (1933-2011) luncheon celebrating first year teachers in Cabarrus County S&D Coffee and Tea public schools. CCEF hired its first Executive Director, Rachel Wilkes in 2014 to expand CCEF’s impact on students by providing resources to teachers. During this time, CCEF’s classroom grant program doubled in size and the First “The world our children live in demands the Generation College Scholarship Program was started. highest quality education we can provide. I hope you will join me in making the Foundation’s dreams come true.” Upon Rachel’s resignation in early 2016, the CCEF sought a Grace Mynatt - Commissioner, Cabarrus County new Executive Director and selected Amy Gough to fill this CCEF Immediate Past President role.
