Helston

Is a borough, market town and chapelry, in the parish of , and hundred of ; 277 miles from London, 91 from Exeter, 17 from , and 10 from Penryn. Its ancient name was Hâl- laston, signifying a ‘hill on the green moor’; and in all records it is spelled Helleston, whence its present appellation is derived. It is a thriving and populous town, situated on the great road from Plymouth to the Land’s End, and on the side of a hill, which gently declines towards the west, and terminates on the margin of a vale, through which the little runs to the pool. The houses are chiefly ranged along four principal streets, which cross each other at right angles; they are tolerably well laid out, all paved, and lighted with gas; a stream of water runs through them, and they are kept in general remarkably clean. Near the centre of the town is a large market-house, over which is the town-hall, erected in the year 1576. The coinage hall is at the extremity of the street which bears its name. This town having formerly been connected with an ancient castle, (which once stood where the bowling-green now is), has been a place of considerable note from a very early period; and, growing up under its auspices, enjoyed many privileges, which the inhabitants contrived to preserve when the castle mouldered to decay. has, at different times, received no less than sixteen charters; in all of which some privilege has been either granted or augmented. The first of these charters is said to have been bestowed by King John, in the year 1201. By Edward I, Helston was made one of the coinage towns for the county; and the privilege of sending two members to parliament was conferred by the same monarch. This charter continued in force until the year 1774, when a new one was obtained, which determined the corporation to consist of a mayor, four aldermen, a recorder, and an indefinite number of freemen; this is the charter that is now in force. The right of voting for members is in the freemen, elected by the majority of the mayor and aldermen; the number of voters is generally about 80; the mayor is the returning officer; the present representatives are, the Marquis of Carmarthen and Lord James Townsend. In the vicinity of Helston are some very productive mines of tin, lead, and copper; particularly one of tin, called ‘Huel Vor’, from which is obtained annually a quantity equal to one-fourth of all the tin in the county. The church, or rather chapel of ease, is a neat modern structure, with a lofty pinnacled tower; it is dedicated to St Michael; the present curate is the Rev. Derwent Coleridge, who is appointed by the vicar of Wendron. Here are a meeting-house for the baptists and methodists; a national school; and a dispensary for the sick poor, not paupers. There are two very superior inns here (the ‘Angel’ and ‘Star’) well known by travellers through the county for the excellent accommodation they afford. The market-days are Wednesday and Saturday; and there are nine fairs held annually, viz: the Saturdays before Mid-lent Sunday and Palm-Sunday, Whit-Monday, July 20th, September 9th, October 28th, and the first, second and third Saturdays before Christmas eve. Wendron parish contained, in 1821, 6,864 inhabitants, and the borough and chapelry of Helston 2,671 of that number.
