It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Annual Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival! For more than five decades, this signature event embraces visitors from far and wide to enjoy a wonderfully sweet experience in our community. I encourage you to take in the entertainment, shop for unique gifts and try some mouthwatering maple syrup. This local tradition brings together family, friends and neighbours to celebrate our cultural fabric and rural pride. Thank you to the team of volunteers and organizers for your hours of hard work, Don Allen and for what you continually Mayor of Springwater Township fundraise for local projects and charitable causes through this spectacular event. It is the tireless dedication of volunteers that make Springwater such a charming and vibrant place to live. Each year, this event brings together the local community to celebrate the annual Maple Syrup Harvest. This important and valuable tradition attracts visitors from all across the province and country who come to Elmvale seeking a reminder of their Canadian roots. Weaving together local talent, creativity, and innovation, the festival delights us in new and exciting ways each year, while remaining deeply grounded in the traditions of the area. As the world’s leading producer and exporter of maple products, we can safely say that maple syrup is a highly valuable Canadian commodity. From its discovery and first use, through the years of innovation and advances in collection methods, to the presence of the Maple leaf on our national flag, it certainly holds true as one of the classic symbols of Canadian culture. Today, Elmvale continues this proud tradition as a hub for maple syrup production and celebration. Thank you to the volunteers and organizers who work tirelessly to make this event happen year after year. Following the counting and tabulation of the ballots, the winner will be announced on Sunday, August 23 starting at 6:00 PM. Initially slated to end June 27, the contest was extended to August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Candidates Four candidates are in the running: Peter Mackay: He was a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2015 and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006–2007), Minister of National Defence (2007–2013) and Minister of Justice and Attorney General (2013–2015) in the cabinet of Stephen Harper. Earlier, MacKay was the final leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, and he agreed to merge the party with Stephen Harper's Canadian Alliance in 2003, forming the Conservative Party of Canada and became its first Deputy Leader. Erin O’Toole: Currently the MP for Durham, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in a by-election in 2012. O'Toole served as Minister of Veterans’ Affairs in 2015. In 2017, O'Toole ran in the 2017 Conservative leadership race to replace Stephen Harper, where he finished third. Since August 2017 and until he entered the current leadership race, O'Toole served as the Official Opposition critic for foreign affairs.
