WELLINGTON AFC Club History

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members.

The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level.

The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year.

Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and could be promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season.

The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club.

This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year.

During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site.

Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)

THE FIRST TEAM SQUAD TAKEN BEFORE A RECENT GAME MATCH REPORT – 20TH NOVEMBER 2019 TOOLSTSTAION WESTERN LEAGUE – PREMIER DIVSION WELLINGTON 0 2 PLYMOUTH PARKWAY

Wellington were unable to stop Plymouth Parkway’s charge to the top of the league as a goal in each half saw them take all three points back to Devon. Parkway are intent on gaining promotion to the Southern League, having been pipped by Willand Rovers last season, and have invested heavily to make the leap.

For their part, Wellington are still undergoing a rebuilding process following the departure of manager Clive Jones and, subsequently, 12 of his first-team squad. To make matters more difficult, new boss Tim Legg was without four of his starting 11 from the previous game and so included himself in the line-up, having recovered from injury, along with Harry Hamblin, a new signing from Town.

Wellington created an early chance on 12 minutes with Joe Wilkinson breaking clear on the right and putting in a dangerous cross which just went behind the onrushing Hamblin. Not surprisingly, Legg’s inexperienced team were under the cosh for most of the game but they held Parkway at bay for the first 36 minutes until their stubborn defence was finally breached. A low cross caused problems for Wellington and Luke Mortimer was left to prod the ball home from close range.

Keeper Tom Welch was again on top form in the home goal but could not prevent Parkway doubling their advantage five minutes after the break. Striker Adam Carter showed why he is the league’s leading scorer by getting in behind the defence and producing a clinical finish from a tight angle.

To their credit, Wellington refused to lie down and, just after the hour mark, skipper Glen Wright sent in a fierce shot which was parried by the keeper with George Sinnott just unable to reach the rebound first. Welch produced a number of fine saves to keep the score at 2-0 but the visitors ran out worthy winners and will undoubtedly be title challengers this season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Carl Jones was named Man of the Match and the award was presented by Club Chairman, Mike Hall.

MATCH REPORT – 23RD NOVEMBER 2019 TOOLSTSTAION WESTERN LEAGUE – PREMIER DIVSION BITTON 2 0 WELLINGTON

Re-built Wellington gave another spirited display but were unable to halt their run of defeats at Bitton. The hosts, who started the game in ninth place, are among the most highly-rated sides in the division and were good value for their victory. It was the last in a run of difficult fixtures since new boss Tim Legg took over and Wellington now have time to re-group as they are without a game next Saturday.

Legg made a number of changes to the side from the midweek defeat by table- topping Plymouth Parkway with the return of defenders Tom Stone and Neil Last plus a call-up in midfield for Ollie Nott. It was a cagey opening to the game but the first effort on goal saw Bitton take the lead as defender Alex Grimshaw rose unchallenged to head home a corner.

Although the visitors were under the cosh for most of the first half, they almost drew level in similar circumstances after 41 minutes. Stone rose to meet a corner from George Sinnott but his thumping header was acrobatically tipped over by keeper Sam Burgess to sum up Wellington’s luck in front of goal since Legg took over.

To make matters worse, Bitton scored what proved to be a second killer goal on the stroke of half time when the dangerous Aysa Corrick cut in from the right and sent a low shot past keeper Tom Welch.

After the break, it was a similar story with the home side always on top but they failed to add to their tally thanks to some poor finishing and another excellent display by the in-form Welch. At the other end, Charlie Dodd and substitute Luke Boyle both had chances to reduce the deficit but were denied by Burgess.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Harry Hamblin was named Man of the Match and the award was presented by Ken Bird, the Club Website and Social Media Officer.

TODAY’S VISITORS SHEPTON MALLET

We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Shepton Mallet for today’s Toolstation Western League Premier Division game.

Shepton Mallet Town FC originated from the amalgamation of three local teams in 1933, and they won the Somerset Senior League Premier Division title in 1949,1959,1974 and 1975, as well as lifting the Somerset Senior Cup in 1950 and 1965.

Manager Richard Fox took the club into the Western League in 1976, finishing runners up in their first season and gaining promotion to the Premier Division. Relegated two seasons later, ex. City player Bryan Drysdale regained promotion for the side in season 1981-2 when they won the 1st Division title, but four years later at the end of season 1985-6 the original club folded and dropped out of the Western League.

A new club called Shepton Mallet AFC was formed for season 1987-8 starting back in the County league in division 2, and reaching the Premier division three seasons later after two promotions. Manager Alan O'Leary brought them their only success in the 1990s, winning the Somerset Senior Cup in 1997-8 after a thrilling final against local rivals Radstock Town.

Then after a 15 year absence, manager Roger Smith took the side back into the Western League after winning the Somerset Premier League title in season 2000- 01. A respectable 7th placed finish followed, as did Smith's resignation early the following season, before former players Gary Banfield and his assistant Jason Neale took over and achieved another decent finish in 9th spot.

A dip in fortune then followed, the club invariably finishing near the bottom of the table and flirting with relegation more than once, as managers Shane Smith, Malcolm Beck and Mark(Dusty)Ford followed. Ex Castle Cary manager Kevan Davis then gave the club some stability and higher placed finishes with four seasons in charge up to 2009, before another regular turnover in the following three seasons saw Keith Brown, Chris Mountford, Glynn Shaw and Benji Tricker come and go.

The inspired appointment of ex Paulton Rovers manager Andy Jones in 2012 gave the club four seasons of success, with promotion in 2nd spot in 2013-14, followed by two top 10 finishes in the Premier division in 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Andy brought a number of ex Bristol City players to the club such as Scott Murray, Louie Carey, Steve Phillips and Joe Burnell, not forgetting ex Gas player Jon French as well. Along with his assistant Ben Cleverley, he then stood down and former Yeovil Town player Rob Cousins was appointed for season 2016-17.

Poor results early on saw Rob leave in September and club skipper Craig Loxton took over, helping the club achieve a creditable 12th spot that season. Craig was joined by Jon Burr as co-manager for a successful 2017-18 season that saw the club achieve their highest ever league place when they finished in 6th place as well as narrowly missing out on the Les Phillips cup final after a penalty shoot-out against Buckland Athletic.

Craig and Jon remained at the helm again last season, which saw the team finish mid table in 11th place. This season we welcome a new addition to the club in ex Hengrove manager John Durbin, he will now form a 3 man management team with Craig and Jon.

WELLINGTON RESERVES – TAKEN BEFORE THEIR GAME AGAINST CREDITON MATCH REPORT MACRON DEVOM & EXETER LEAGUE – DIV 1 WELLINGTON RESERVES 1 0 CREDITON UNITED

After a massively frustrating four weeks of postponements, the Reserves finally got back on the pitch and table-topping Crediton were the visitors. Wellington gave debuts to midfielder Brad Holmans and 16-year-old defender Danny Nicholls, both products of the successful A team, and there was also a recall for tough- tackling veteran Matt Holmes while Jamie Fleet took the armband with skipper Mark Owen out through injury.

Crediton started well, moving the ball around with confidence, but without too much threat early on. It was a tight affair for the majority of the first half although the better opportunities fell to Wellington. Josh Baker fed a rejuvenated Luke Woodgate through the middle on 20 minutes. He rounded the onrushing keeper but his touch took him wide and the chance was soon gone. Welly created numerous half chances, but never really tested the opposition’s keeper. They should have gone ahead on the half-hour when a free kick from the left was delivered deep to the far post. Tom Davies met it and headed back across goal when Fleet went close, but the ball was partially cleared. It fell invitingly to Woodgate just inside the box but the usually calm and instinctive striker fired his shot high.

Wellington were very well marshalled throughout by the centre back pairing of Fleet and Davies who had a solid look to them. But their defence was breached on 37 minutes a powerful shot across goal was met by the strong hands of young keeper Rob Hall who somehow pushed the goalbound shot behind for a corner. The half ended goalless with the home side just about ahead on points. Playing up the slope for the second half, Wellington knew they needed to be more composed and clinical in the final third. The match continued in much the same fashion as the first with both sides working very hard, with lots of physical encounters and few clearcut chances.

The all-important goal came in the 63rd minute … and what a goal. Oli Nott collected the ball in the final third, high on the right. Cutting inside, he played a neat pass into Ash Saunders who calmly laid the ball off for Nott to move on to at pace. Bursting into the box he brushed off one defender before hitting an absolute screamer of a right-footed shot past a motionless keeper high into the far corner. It was that good, even the opposition applauded the strike.

Fresh legs were needed to see out the remaining 20 minutes and this saw the introduction of 17-year-olds Wes Poulsom (winger) and Robbie Broomhead (midfield) – both unlucky not start – for Saunders and Holmans. The game continued to ebb and flow, but Wellington’s desire to hold out for the win was admirable, epitomised by the workrate and tackling back of Clay Westcott in midfield. Darren Mace replaced a tiring Holmes with 10 minutes remaining. Wellington had one last chance on 82 minutes. A free kick on the right was delivered superbly by young Broomhead to the far post where fellow teen Nicholls stretched to head goalbound, but unfortunately straight into the chest of the away keeper. Wellington deserved their win – not always pretty but the desire and effort was apparent for all to see. Man-of-the-match went to young debutant Nicholls. This win is the Reserves’ third on the bounce without conceding and sets them up nicely for next week’s away game at lowly Tipton St John. A win there will continue their rise up the table to where they deserve to be.

MATCH REPORT INVEST SOUTHWEST TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE – DIV TWO WELLINGTON A 3 0 MINEHEAD RESERVES

After a frustrating postponement, Wellington A returned to league action in Baltic but thankfully dry conditions against Minehead, who had always previously proved tough opponents.

In a game of first versus tenth, it was clear from the off that Wellington were the better side and bossed possession of the ball. The Tangerine Army created chance after chance but high quality was required to break the deadlock against a resilient opposition. This came through the left foot of Tyler Fyfe whose inch perfect cross split the defence and was met by Aaron Merry, who energetically led the front line. Wellington continued to press but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the break.

The second half continued in much the same way and Wellington were finally rewarded for their dominance when a tactical rotation switched Rohan Poulsom up front and he was able to calmly sidefoot past the keeper to double the lead. The game was made comfortable when a Wellington cross from the left was turned home by a Minehead defender. Wellington should have had a fourth when assistant manager Will Hammond, coming on to look for his annual goal, had a low volley blocked on the line by James Kitson who then couldn’t finish either. In the end, Wellington happily took the victory and points and move on to another home game against Bridgwater Grasshoppers on Saturday. EXTRACT FROM TOOLSTATION BULLETIN ST 1 DECEMBER 2019

FA Vase: Bradford Town booked their spot in fourth round following a dramatic extra-time victory over Bridgwater Town. In what started out as a tight affair, the Bobcats took until 62 minutes to break the deadlock, with Gary Higdon heading home a Matt Morris cross. Bridgwater weren’t there to make up the numbers however, and having been behind for less than ten minutes, they got back on level terms with Mr Reliable, Jake Llewellyn tucking home his penalty. With the extra- time period less than three minutes old, Bradford went ahead for the second time in the contest through Sean Keet. A frantic 30 minutes then ensued, with Harry Horton volleying the visitors level, before Tyson Pollard restored Bradford’s advantage from the spot. Jack Witcombe was then sent off for the home side just before half-time of extra-time, with Pollard then scoring for the ten men to give them their first two-goal lead of the afternoon. That second Pollard strike proved crucial, after Tom Ellis headed home for Bridgwater who fell one goal short of a last-ditch comeback. In another incident-filled clash, nine-man Buckland held off a late charge from ten-man Tavistock to prevail by two goals to one in Devon. Tavistock made a really poor start to the contest, and after Tom Strike was awarded an early red card, they then fell two goals behind with Richard Groves and Mani Skett scoring in quick succession. A flash point at the beginning of the second half threatened Buckland’s position of strength, with Dan Harrison dismissed for a foul in the area which led to a penalty for the home side. Jack Crago saw his spot kick saved by Ken Griffiths however to maintain his side’s two-goal advantage. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Lloyd Gardner joined Harrison in getting an early bath, and Tavistock set up a nail-biting final few minutes when Jordan Annear pulled a goal back. The hosts pushed hard in the closing stages, but they were unable to force home an equaliser, giving Buckland a memorable victory.

In the other all-Western League tie on Saturday afternoon, Bitton defeated Cribbs 2-1 to extend their run in the competition. Having taken a 15th minute lead through Josh Egan, Bitton were hauled back by their visitors who levelled affairs through George Kellow following a fine set-piece delivery from Jacob Hodgson. The game was decided just prior to the hour mark, with Ryan Bath popping up in the right spot to slot home the winner. The star of the day in the FA Vase was Plymouth Parkway’s Jordan Copp, who scored all of his side’s goals during a 4-1 victory away at Hamworthy United. After Copp had given Parkway a fifth minute lead, the Hammers responded to make it 1-1 towards the end of the first half. After the interval, Copp was unstoppable, firstly restoring Parkway’s lead, before then curling home a terrific effort from outside the box to complete his hat-trick. With less than five minutes left on the clock, Copp added some gloss to the scoreline, slotting home his fourth of the game to wrap up a terrific win for the in-form Devonians. On Sunday, Warminster knocked out Premier Division outfit Roman Glass St George with a come from behind 2-1 victory. After falling behind to George Box’s early opener, Eben Mortimer-Taylor levelled for Warminster at the end of the first half, before James Vincent struck late on to book the Wiltshire side’s spot in the last 32.

Premier Division: Hallen have now won four league games on the bounce thanks to a last-gasp 3-2 victory away at Chipping Sodbury Town. After taking a very early lead through Sacha Tong, Hallen conceded either side of the interval to trail going into the final half-hour. They were handed a lifeline when Kyle Thomas slotted home the equalising penalty, and then in injury-time, Hallen managed to beat their ten-man hosts when Isaac Reid scored the game-winner. Bridport were the last time to beat Hallen in the league, and they moved up to 18th on Saturday afternoon, after second half goals from Declan Cornish and Tom Richardson handed them a 2-0 victory at home to Cadbury Heath. Another team to win by two goals to nil were Clevedon Town, with a pair of second half strikes helping them see off Westbury at the Hand Stadium. Morgan Williams headed Clevedon in front on the hour mark thanks to a fine cross from George King, with Lucas Vowles then wrapping up the victory to help his side rise up to fourth. Just one place lower on the table are Exmouth, who collected their ninth league victory of the season thanks to a 2-1 triumph at home to Shepton Mallet. Goals either side of the break from Ben Steer and Jordan Harris proved to be enough for Exmouth, who were given a late scare when Jacob Lyons headed home for the visitors during the final 20 minutes. Keynsham Town ended a five-match losing run by sneaking to a 1-0 victory away at free-falling Odd Down. With neither side bringing any semblance of form into the contest, it was no surprise that one goal was all that separated the sides, with Stefan Lee’s 62nd minute effort handing the K’s all three points. Brislington were denied victory late on during their clash at home to Street, with the visitors bagging a late point to end their two-match losing run. After Neikell Plummer had put the hosts within sight of anther home win, Olly Hebbard stepped up to equalise with 11 minutes left on the clock.
