Harper's Island Wetlands Butterflies & Moths (2020)
Introduction Harper’s Island Wetlands (HIW) nature reserve, situated close to the village of Glounthaune on the north shore of Cork Harbour is well known for its birds, many of which come from all over northern Europe and beyond, but there is a lot more to the wildlife at the HWI nature reserve than birds. One of our goals it to find out as much as we can about all aspects of life, both plant and animal, that live or visit HIW. This is a report on the butterflies and moths of HIW. Butterflies After birds, butterflies are probably the one of the best known flying creatures. While there has been no structured study of them on at HIW, 17 of Ireland’s 33 resident and regular migrant species of Irish butterflies have been recorded. Just this summer we added the Comma butterfly to the island list. A species spreading across Ireland in recent years possibly in response to climate change. Hopefully we can set up regular monitoring of the butterflies at HIW in the next couple of years. Butterfly Species Recorded at Harper’s Island Wetlands up to September 2020. Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 D (Barrowhill, Otterpool and East Stour River) The tetrad TR13 D is an area of mostly farmland with several small waterways, of which the East Stour River is the most significant, and there are four small lakes (though none are publically-accessible), the most northerly of which is mostly covered with Phragmites. Other features of interest include a belt of trees running across the northern limit of Lympne Old Airfield (in the extreme south edge of the tetrad), part of Harringe Brooks Wood (which has no public access), the disused (Otterpool) quarry workings and the westernmost extent of Folkestone Racecourse and. The northern half of the tetrad is crossed by the major transport links of the M20 and the railway, whilst the old Ashford Road (A20), runs more or less diagonally across. Looking south-west towards Burnbrae from the railway Whilst there are no sites of particular ornithological significance within the area it is not without interest. A variety of farmland birds breed, including Kestrel, Stock Dove, Sky Lark, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Lesser Whitethroat, Yellowhammer, and possibly Buzzard, Yellow Wagtail and Meadow Pipit. Two rapidly declining species, Turtle Dove and Spotted Flycatcher, also probably bred during the 2007-11 Bird Atlas. The Phragmites at the most northerly lake support breeding Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting. In winter Fieldfare and Redwing may be found in the fields, whilst the streams have attracted Little Egret, Snipe and, Grey Wagtail, with Siskin and occasionally Lesser Redpoll in the alders along the East Stour River. Corn Bunting may be present if winter stubble is left and Red Kite, Peregrine, Merlin and Waxwing have also occurred. -

Maria di Galeria (Rome), Italy Received: August 5, 2010 Accepted: November 3, 2010 SUMMARY The Scotch thistle, Onopordum acanthium (Asteraceae) has the Eurasian origin and represents an invasive weed in the USA and Australia. It is a serious problem in pastures, along roadsides, rangeland, etc. The weed is very common in Bulgaria and in 2009-2010 several sites with large populations of O. acanthium have been located. The weekly sur- veys of some of the sites, mainly in the region of Plovdiv, revealed a significant diver- sity of phytophagous insect species, some of which had very high population density. More than 30 species have already been identified and observations on the phenolo- gy and biology of some of them have been conducted. For some of the species, such as endophagous Larinus latus, Lixus cardui, Eublemma amoena, Trichosirocalus briesei, or ectophagous Cassida rubiginosa etc. found during our surveys, there are reports in the lit- erature describing them as having been already introduced as successful biocontrol agents in Australia. Endophagous species like lepidopteran Myelois circumvoluta and Pyroderces argyrogrammos which feed on the stems and the head, and the tephritid flies Tephritis pos- tica and Chaetostomella cylindrica which feed on the capitula, seem quite destructive for the weed, but need to be further studied regarding host specificity. -

Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 I (Westenhanger area and Kiln Wood) One of the more interesting habitats in TR13 I is the lake at Folkestone Racecourse, which holds breeding Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and Coot, with these being joined by Gadwall and Pochard in winter, whilst White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Wigeon, Pintail and Goldeneye have also occurred on occasion, generally during cold weather, though the lake is prone to freezing over during prolonged frosts. Snipe can sometimes be found in the ditches by the lake and Reed Buntings breed in the surrounding vegetation, whilst Marsh Harrier and Merlin have been noted overhead. The parkland area around Westenhanger Castle used to hold Spotted Flycatchers but this species has since declined considerably. Black Redstart has been recorded singing from the racecourse buildings and may occasionally breed here. The fields in the Hillhurst Farm area may attract Lapwings and occasionally Golden Plover, whilst when left as stubble in the winter of 2013/14 they held a flock of up to 50 Yellowhammers, together with single Jack Snipe and Corn Bunting, and small numbers of Stock Doves, Sky Larks, Meadow Pipits, Linnets and Reed Buntings. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls may be attracted, with a peak count of about 100 in November 2013. Kiln Wood has breeding Buzzard and typical woodland species, including Nuthatch, whilst Woodcock, Siskin and sometimes Lesser Redpoll may winter and the small pond in the wood can attract Mandarin. In May 2009 a singing Wood Warbler was present but was presumably just a migrant. -

Survey of species in the HAM HILL COUNTRY PARK for the South Somerset District Council by members and friends of the Yeovil & District Wildlife Recording Group & SSDC Countryside Officers Updated – end December 2017 - 1 - Key: S = Northern Spur; F = Plateau Fields; V = Witcombe Valley (includes Horse’s Wood); W = Pit Wood. - 2 - Survey of species in the HAM HILL COUNTRY PARK for the South Somerset District Council by members and friends of the Yeovil & District Wildlife Recording Group & SSDC Countryside Officers This survey was started in 2004 with the object of recording species found within the Ham Hill Country Park. For the purposes of wildlife recording the area was split into four separate sites: the so-called Northern Spur, that is the area more or less comprising the original Ham Hill Country Park, and the areas added to the country park from 1996 onwards, namely Plateau Fields, Witcombe Valley (including Horse’s Wood) and Pit Wood. Lists have been prepared of: Mammals Reptiles & Amphibians Birds Invertebrates Flowering plants Ferns Fungi Lichens - based on a survey by V. J. Giavarini To be added: Mosses & Liverworts Members are asked to record any species seen within the Park and send that list to the Recording Group so that a continuing up-date of the records can be made. Records will be passed to the SSDC and the Somerset Environmental Records Centre to ensure the best possible use is made of them. Summary Located in the Parish of Pamber, Little London is a Biodiversity hotspot with New Road at its environmental heart. Despite the name New Road is one of the oldest highways in the village and this is reflected in the range of wildlife found along its length, and in the countryside bordering it. New Road has significance for wildlife far beyond is narrow, single-track status. Its ancient hedgerows and adjacent meadows are rich in wildlife but of equal importance is its role as a corridor of wildlife connectivity. -

It is contiguous with Pillar Wood immediately to the east and in the north incorporates Fox Wood and to the south, Auster Wood. The woodland complex (including Pillar Wood) covers an area of around 300 hectares (741 acres) but for the purposes of this booklet, the focus is on the Forestry Commission (FC) owned Bourne/Fox Wood which amounts to around 225 ha (556 acres). It overlooks the town and the reclaimed fens to its east. It lies at altitudes between 20 and 50 metres with the land generally rising in an east to west direction. The wood is owned by the FC who manage it for timber production, wildlife and informal recreation. Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Ås May 2020 Branislav Endel i Abstract The trend of minimizing pesticide usage in agriculture leads scientists to think about alternatives of how pest numbers can be reduced. The tortricid moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a group of insects responsible for great damage in fruit orchards. Efficient models for predicting damage by these moths have so far mainly been developed for the most serious world-wide apple pest, the codling moth Cydia pomonella. Such forecasting models are not well-established for other tortricids and recent data on their status in Norwegian conditions are scare. -

Quarantine species were not caught in pheromone traps in Lithuania: Spodoptera eridania in 1999, S. frugiperda in 2000, and S. littoralis in 2001. Moths of 18 species and five families were caught in pheromone traps for Spodoptera eridania, of 29 and 11 families in traps for S. frugiperda, and of 28 species and nine families in traps for S. littoralis. During the investigation some rare for Lithuania species (Anarsia lineatella, Argyresthia sorbiella, Ochsenheimeria vacculella, Cydia lunulana, Myelois circumvoluta, Pristerognatha fuligana, Mesapamea didyma, Opigena polygona, Allophyes oxyacanthae, and Xanthia gilvago) were trapped and their new distribution localities detected.
