ALTERED IMAGES: THE NEW PORTRAITURE Simply painting a portrait is so last century. Courtesy of Alison Jacques Gallery From primitive images of hunters on cave walls to portraits of Medici popes and princes, the urge to portray and to be portrayed is as old as art itself. And even in our current era of selfies, Snapchat and Instagram when everyone’s smartphone can take a top-quality snap, there remains a hunger for a more formal portraiture: the National Portrait Gallery’s annual BP Portrait Award packs in the crowds every year and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters continues to rake in commissions. But at the same time the definition of what now constitutes a bespoke portrait has become as broad and as various as art itself, and many of our most progressive artists are pushing back the boundaries of the made-to- order likeness for their own artistic ends. Marc Quinn has not only produced a series of self-portrait busts from his own frozen blood, but his portrayal of Sir John Edward Sulston hanging in the NPG consists of the geneticist’s own DNA (taken from a sperm sample) preserved in agar jelly and mounted in stainless steel. Rather more restrained is German artist Tobias Rehberger’s practice of portraying his subjects as sculptured flowers in vases – patrons are invited to bring along their favourite blooms – while French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s family portrait for Cincinatti collector Andy Stillpass took the form of a freestanding metal clothesline festooned with white clothes belonging to each family member. -

Artnet May 17, 2011 An Interview with Ashley Bickerton EDEN’S ANTI-HERO By Emily Nathan Back in 1993, Ashley Bickerton (b. 1959) abandoned his prominent position in the New York art scene, set up shop on the island of Bali, and never came back. Surprising though the move might seem -- and Bickerton remains a player in contemporary art -- island living was a part of his history. The son of renowned linguist Derek Bickerton, who studied creoles and pidgins, the artist’s childhood was spent in places where “they spoke English funny,” from Barbados to Hawaii. Following his graduation from Cal Arts in 1982, he arrived in New York to attend the Whitney Independent Studies Program, and quickly rose to fame as one of the “Fantastic Four” -- along with fellow Neo-Geo artists Jeff Koons, Peter Halley and Meyer Vaisman -- in the wake of a seminal exhibition at Sonnabend Gallery. It was simply a return to form, then, when the 1987 Black Monday market crash prompted his escape from East Village celebrity to a storied if remote Indonesian isle. His early New York works were high-tech "commodity sculptures,” integrating corporate logos and commercial hardware into strange, machine-like objects that were, at heart, expressions of his manic surfer passions. But once he hit Bali, the beachcomber in him took over, and the nuts and bolts and digital read-outs were replaced by chunks of coral, bottle tops, worn flip-flops and all manner of flotsam and jetsam. Complementing this abundance of Edenic ephemera was the artist’s taste for high- key hyperrealism -- a kind of painting esthetic familiar from any boardwalk airbrush booth, though often enough pushed to a wacky extreme -- and these days, he frequently depicts a cobalt-skinned character he calls the Blue Man. -

PRESS RELEASE ALESSANDRO RAHO 7 SEPTEMBER – 6 OCTOBER 2012 OPENING: THURSDAY 6 SEPTEMBER, 6 – 8PM ʻSince the mid-1990s, Alessandro Raho has been advancing and refining a manner of figurative painting in which the sentience of human presences synonymous with a profound, existential and spiritual sense of being…The figures in his portraits possess the sense of having been re-born – as though cleansed beyond death – or of being seen as platonically ʻrealisedʼ, beyond the less substantial shadow versions of themselves that go about their terrestrial business.ʼ Michael Bracewell, Alessandro Raho, Lund Humphries, 2011 This is Alessandro Rahoʼs second solo show at Alison Jacques Gallery. The subjects he depicts – whether self-portraits, friends or family – are presented in pared down form: each figure centred and isolated on a monochrome ground. Raho's use of harsh, artificial, frontal lighting in studio photoshoots is carried through to the look of his canvases. The patterned or blocked colour of his subjects' clothing deliberately contrasts with the reoccurring white or pastel tones of his backgrounds. This attention to abstract composition might objectify the sitters, if it wasnʼt for Rahoʼs ability to render the subtlest traces of their mood in the direction of a gaze, or the slight up or downward curve of a personʼs mouth. His figures are presented with an unapologetic frontality, free from context or narrative, so as to make the subjectsʼ straightforward presence tangible. Whilst the portraits look to be of the ʻeverydayʼ, and indeed many of Rahoʼs paintings show sitters in their own clothes, he has increasingly come to select what they wear for the pictures.
