“Spaghetti Western” assorted , aerosol paint, crystals

As my year of maternity leave with a ten-month-old and a very creative four year old draws to an end, I have chosen “ art” and sparkles as my muse! The four year old has tagged this the “ hat” and has played an important role as artistic collaborator throughout. Glammed up macaroni art- I guess that’s where I am at these days, artistically speaking. As well, spaghetti westerns are a cinematic genre loved by my dear dad and his is constantly not far from my thoughts these days. So, Dad, and Thea, this hat is for you both.

Jody’s hat was given to William, Duke of Cambridge, during his royal visit to Calgary.

Lot 1 The DI & From “The Faces Within.” Within. Rachel Mo and her “Story of the Ocean” mother June. (Rachel is 3 almost 4) Lot 2 Alice S. Helwig “Cowboy Camouflage”

Alice S Helwig was inspired to paint her hat by those big Alberta Skies. As a child she spent a lot of time under them. In fact she remembers trying to count the different number of blues in those vistas. The sky is a common motif in Helwig’s paintings as she paints the Alberta landscape, developing both plein air work and larger studio pieces. Her work is represented by Alley Cat Galleries in Bragg Creek, Mountain Galleries in Banff and Jasper as well as Artbeat Gallery in St Albert. Helwig is also an art educator who teaches for the Wildflower and Northmount Art Centres here in Calgary.

It's the power of imagination that can turn a sock into a horse. Easily abandoned once we grow from child to adult, but once in a while it is unleashed and we find ourselves free to play.

This hat was created by Holly McWilliams with help and inspiration from her six year old, Abby. Together this creative duo can often be found with a needle, scissors and a pair of socks creating their Silly Little Sock Monkeys and other sock derived critters. Myron Krause “Beyond the Blue” Lot 5 daniel j kirk “The Plastic CAP...” www.dksmind.com Inspired by the matte finish plastics that we utilize each day this creation departs from the cliche of the wild west and enters into the world of the whimsical west. The characters depicted represent members of the Urban By-productz community and are designed to question the ideas of waste, recycling as well as community itself. Spray Paint, latex, and ink Reid and Michael “Cow Pies” Frisby Lot 6 Mary Swain b.f.a. “Raven” It seems to me that the way we treat each other is a reflection of how we treat our environment: lacking respect, compassion and understanding. Perhaps when we begin to care for our fellow Human beings, we will then begin to care for our Natural World and find a gracious balance.

The City of Calgary is my home these days but my childhood evolved around the woods, brooks, and exploring the river’s shoreline of rural N.B. Growing up close to Nature it is no surprise that the work I produce is largely informed and directed by the inexhaustible inspiration provided through our Natural environment.

Alberta has a vast and brillant landscape offering endless inspiration and has been a large part of my present-day work with the ever present ravens, hares and dynamic winter nights. I continually travel this great Province from border to border in all directions and will always remember the first time I saw the Canadian Rockies: a surreal experience! Woven into my drawings, designs and forms is the primitive connections of nature, clay, and the raku firing process.

Since then, the artist has taught a variety of community art classes and has been privileged to coordinate numerous art exhibitions, fundraisers, and festivals.

In 2008, Lisa was accepted to an artist residency at the Centre D’Art I Natura located in Farerra, Spain. Like a cozy, well-loved quilt our city is a of neighbourhoods, cultures and interests. Although It has acquired the shiny adornment of new money, its heart is still filled with old- fashioned kindness and hard work. We must put our generosity and ingenuity to work to provide comfort and dignity for all who want to call Calgary home. Mike H. “Butter Flys” The symbol of the butterfly means freedom and peace.
