PREFACE: The Northern River Basins Study was initiated through the "Canada-Alberta-Northwest Territories Agreement Respecting the Peace-Athabasca-Slave River Basin Study, Phase II - Technical Studies" which was signed September 27, 1991. The purpose of the Study is to understand and characterize the cumulative effects of development on the water and aquatic environment of the Study Area by coordinating with existing programs and undertaking appropriate new technical studies. This publication reports the method and findings of particular work conducted as part of the Northern River Basins Study. Under the auspices of the Food Chain Component, freshwater scientists developed a multi-faceted investigation into the movement, life history and diet of fish in the Northwest Territories portion of the Slave River, north of the 60°th parallel. The work was undertaken in such a manner that it could be compared to a mid-1980's investigations. This project report describes the results of an investigation into the life cycle and population characteristics of two key harvested fishes, inconnu {Stenodus leucichthys) and burbot {Lota lota). The fish were monitored from June to December, 1994. Both species of fish are predators that feed on other fish. Consequently, they have the potential to biomagnify contaminants that may accumulate within fish tissue. They are also species likely to be the most vulnerable to change. Results indicated the inconnu that utilize the Slave River for spawning, generally show faster growth rates and mature at an earlier age than more northerly inconnu populations. The spawning population also tends to be younger with a more limited range in age structure. Conversely, burbot exhibited slower growth, later maturity and the population appeared to be relatively unexploited and unstressed. The project assessed inconnu as the species most vulnerable to environmental change due to the narrow range of its spawning year classes. Yet, burbot were considered the species most likely to bioaccumualte contaminants arising from localized pollution because of their restricted activity except during spawning. The results of this project will be combined with the other complementary fish projects dealing with movement (Report # 117) and diet-food web investigations (Report # 119) in the form of a synthesis report that will compare current findings with those of the 1980's. Report Summary To determine the life cycle and demographic characteristics of the inconnu, Stenodus leucichthys, and burbot, Lota lota in the Slave River, Northwest Territories, we sampled between June and December, 1994. Inconnu are migratory utilizing the Slave River for spawning. They were most abundant in the river in late September and October. Based upon the gonadosomatic index, inconnu probably spawn in mid- to late-October in the Slave River. Burbot appear to be highly

    Interview Summary Interviewee: Ronnie Semansha Date: November 4, 2009 Location: Chateh Administration Office Interviewers: Kathrin Janssen, Adena Dinn “This [BC] is our traditional lands” -Ronnie Semansha Hunting and Trapping Ronnie hunts for moose in British Columbia (BC) near Kotcho Lake along the winter access road that spans from Rainbow Lake to Fort Nelson. He once shot a moose adjacent to Cabin Lake. He also uses the Sierra Yoyo Desan road and the winter access road that loops around Kotcho Lake for hunting. He takes this route once a week beginning on Friday afternoons when he is finished work. Ronnie also hunts in the area near Kwokullie Lake; he travels there via the winter access on the 31st baseline. Ronnie strictly hunts for moose in BC, and noted that there are hardly any caribou left. He explained that there used to be lots of caribou in BC but there has been a drop in recent times. Fishing Ronnie noted that there are pickerel in Kotcho Lake and explained that there are all different kinds of fish out there [BC]. Travel Routes Ronnie travels to BC using the winter access roads. He noted that there were two roads that he generally used, one from Rainbow Lake to Fort Nelson and one that cuts North to the Zama area (along the 31st baseline). When he does go out, other community members will often accompany him and everyone chips in a little for gas and supplies. However, he generally goes out for just one day and does not require supplies beyond fuel. One reason is the absence of pre-defined targets, impeding the measurement of success. In this review, success has been measured as a saturation index, where the presence of target plant species in a restoration site is expressed as a percentage of a regional target species pool. This review is intended to evaluate and compare success of many different sites on an idealistic concept where all regional target species have the potential to establish in a site, but may not actually do so because the site is unsuitable or inaccessible. Factors affecting suitability and accessibility and management options to increase regional species diversity are discussed. The results show that many sites contain less than 50% of the regional target species, especially when sites are smaller than 30 ha. Higher species diversity is observed for sites exceeding 100 ha and for sites with the largest elevational range within mean high water neap to mean high water spring tide.

Dreissena polymorpha, Potamopvrgus antipodarum, Corophium curvispinum) and in the Pomeranian Bay (Cordylophora caspia, Mya arenaria, Balanus improvisus, Acartia tonsa) in historical time and which now are dominant components of animal communities there as well as other and less abundant (or less common) alien species in the estuary (e.g. Branchiura sowerbyi, Eriocheir sinensis, Orconectes limosus) are presented. In addition, other newcomers - Marenzelleria viridis, Gammarus tigrinus, and Pontogammarus robustoides - found in the estuary in the recent ten years are described.     The Hay Water RiverMonitoring Activities in the Hay River Region Kátåo’dehé at Enterprise Kátåo’dehé is the South Slavey Dene name for the Hay River. In Chipewyan, the Hay River is Hátå’oresche. In Cree, it is Maskosï-Sïpiy. The Hay River is a culturally significant river for Northerners and an integral part of the Mackenzie River Basin. Given its importance, there are several monitoring initiatives in the region designed to better understand the river and to detect changes. The information collected through these programs can also help to address questions that people may have. While amounts vary from year to year, the volume of water in the Hay River has remained relatively stable since monitoring began in 1963. Only a slight increasing trend in winter flow was revealed. Some changes in water quality were also found, such as increasing trends in phosphorus and decreasing trends in calcium, magnesium and sulphate. This means that the levels of these substances have changed since sampling began in 1988. Further work is needed to understand the ecological significance of these trends. Overall, the water quality and quantity of the Hay River is good. Continued monitoring activities will increase our knowledge of this important river and identify change. Fifteen samples were taken in Zingst–Osterwald and Windwatt from beach ridges to reconstruct the development of the Zingst spit system and separate phases of sediment mobilisation. The Keywords: single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol was applied to coarse grain quartz for OSL dating. The Chronology reliability of OSL data was tested with laboratory experiments including dose recovery, recycling ratio and OSL dating recuperation as well as the stratigraphy. We conclude that the sediment is suitable for OSL measurements Quartz Coastal evolution and the derived ages are internally consistent as well as in agreement with the existing stratigraphy and the Baltic Sea geological models of sediment aggradation. The beach ridges at Zingst–Osterwald aggregated ∼1900 to Coastal sediments ∼1600 years ago before the alteration of the sediment system related to the late Subatlantic transgression and the closing of the coastal inlets.

V6C 0A3 January 2013 Site C Clean Energy Project Volume 5 Appendix A22 Part 1 Community Summary: Salt River First Nation Salt River First Nation #195 The Salt River First Nation #195 (SRFN) has three reserves and one settlement totalling 44,113 ha along the Northwest Territories/Alberta border.1 According to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, as of December 2012, SRFN has a registered population of 923, with 5 members living on SRFN’s reserves and 265 members living on their own Crown land.2 SRFN has a Chief and four Councillors3 and follows a custom electoral system.4 SRFN is a mix of Cree and Chipewyan people.5 SRFN maintains a Development Corporation that is responsible for firefighting, public works and services, construction projects, and line cutting.6 The Development Corporation is also preparing to open a gas bar and convenience store in 2012.7 Historical Background SRFN’s ancestors, known as the Chipewyan Indians of Slave River, adhered to Treaty 8 on July 17, 1899 at Smith’s Landing.8 The Chipewyan Indians of Slave River consisted of two distinct bands: the Dedharesche (now recognized as the SRFN) and the Thebatthie (now recognized as the Smith’s Landing First Nation). However, Canada traditionally recognized the two as one band, the Fitz-Smith Native Band and later the Salt River First Nation #195 (the Consolidated Band).
