Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt became a national hero during the Spanish-American War in 1898, leading his famous cavalry regiment, the Rough Riders (pictured right), against the Spaniards in Cuba.

The U.S. growing toward the south and toward the east as a result of the Spanish-American War of 1898. Spain ceded Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands to the United States as a result of the Spanish-American War of 1898. The United States, in turn, paid $20 million to Spain for the Philippine Islands. Thus, for the first time, America became an imperial power in the Far East. The Spanish-American War also clarified the need for a canal through the Isthmus of Panama, which separated the Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish-American War thus led to the construction of the Panama Canal.
