SOUND THE ALARM: THE GOALS OF HUMANISM1 The watchman on the wall of an ancient city had to be alert for signs of danger. His responsibility was to inform others of what he saw. Should he detect a foreign army about to attack, he needed to sound an alarm. In our own American history, we remember the midnight ride of Paul Revere—from Charleston to Medford, and on to Concord and Lexington. So through the night rode Paul Revere And so through the night went his cry of alarm To every Middlesex village and farm.2 Likewise, we must sound an alarm regarding humanism and the dangers it presents to Christians. I wish it were possible for us to shout, as did those watchmen on ancient walls, “The enemy is coming!” But that’s not the message about humanism which we must convey. That message would imply that we are here, and that humanism is off over yonder somewhere. Our message—one which leaves us with a sinking feeling—is more comparable to the announcement that “we’ve got termites in our woodwork!” Humanism is not coming. It’s already here! It has already done much damage. It has already eaten far into the structures of our society. It kills unborn babies. It hurts youth with drugs. It dirties minds with profanity. It turns children against their parents. It robs families of their wealth. It severely damages and often destroys Christian families. If left alone, humanism will eat its way through the country until eventually it has destroyed all Christian homes and churches. -
In Memoriam Mary Morain (1911-1999)
IN MEMORIAM MARY MORAIN (1911-1999) We note with great sadness the passing of Mary Stone Dewing Morain, who died on June 14, 1999 . A graduate of Radcliffe College and the University of Chicago, Mary Morain accomplished much during her long life . Upon learning of her death, many noted her support and leadership of American and International Humanist organizations and her work on behalf of the United Nations Association and Planned Parent- hood . A former president of the International Society for General Semantics, she edited two collections of articles from ETC and two educational anthologies . With her husband Lloyd Morain she wrote Humanism As the Next Step . A second edition appeared in 1998 . Lloyd describes Mary's early involvement with general seman- tics: While a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the mid-1930s, Mary became acquainted with Douglas Gordon Campbell and Dr. Condon, both of whom felt general semantics assisted them in student counseling . Korzybski established his Institute near the campus and Mary attended one of his early seminars . Mary's mother, a Harvard-Radcliffe Ph .D ., was already interested in general semantics and assisted several stu- dents with scholarships to the Institute . Both of Mary's parents considered themselves humanists, and her father, a retired Har- vard professor, consented to serve on the Institute's advisory board. After receiving her M.A ., Mary attended a gs seminar under Donald McLean at Mills College in Oakland, California. A Call for a New Planetary Humanism A Call for a New Planetar y I Humanism The following document was drafted by FREE INQUIRY Editor-in- Preamble Chief Paul Kurtz, drafter of Humanist Manifesto II (1973), A Secular Humanist Declaration (1980), and A Declaration of Interdependence: A New Global Ethics (1988). umanism is an ethical, scientific, and philo- sophical outlook that has changed the world. Its heritage traces back to the philos o phers and po ets of ancient Greece and Rome, Confu cian Chi na, and the Carvaka movement in classical India. Humanist artists, writers, scien tists, and Hthinkers have been shaping the modern era for over half a millennium. Indeed, humanism and modernism have often seemed syn on y mous; for humanist ideas and values express a renewed confidence in the pow er of human beings to solve their own problems and conquer uncharted frontiers. Modern humanism came to fruition during the Renaissance. It led to the development of modern science. During the Enlightenment it germinated new ideals of social justice and inspired the democratic revo lu tions of our time. Humanism has helped frame a new ethical out- look emphasizing the values of freedom and happiness and the virtues of universal human rights. The signers of this Manifesto believe that humanism has much to offer humanity as we face the problems of the twenty-first century and the new millennium beyond. Many of the old ideas and traditions that humankind has inherited are no longer relevant to current realities and future oppor- tunities. We need fresh thinking if we are to cope with the global society that is now emerging, and fresh thinking is the hallmark of humanism. -

It has its roots in clas sical China, Greece, and Rome; it is expressed in the Renais sance and the Enlightenment, in the scientific revolution, and in the twentieth century. Each age seeks to define what its distinctive values are, what it seeks to cherish and enhance. Each age has to contend with alienating and restrictive forces that seek to denigrate the individual, undermine humane values, and suppress social justice. In the twentieth century, humanist awareness has devel oped at a rapid pace; yet it has to overcome powerful anti- humanist forces that seek to destroy it. In 1933 a group of thirty-four liberal humanists in the United States defined and enunciated the philosophical and religious principles that seemed to them fundamental. They drafted Humanist Manifesto /, which for its time was a radical docu ment. It was concerned with expressing a general religious and philosophical outlook that rejected orthodox and dog matic positions and provided meaning and direction, unity and purpose to human life. It was committed to reason, sci ence, and democracy. -

Secular Humanism in Public School Textbooks: Thou Shalt Have No Other God (Except Thyself) The Supreme Court has recently developed an increasingly broad definition of religion for the first amendment in the context of free exer- cise cases.' As the number and diversity of religions in the United States continue to grow, interesting issues have arisen in attempts to apply this broad definition. One of the more notable issues has been raised by con- servative Christians 2 who have argued that the expansive Supreme Court definition should be applied to establishment clause cases as well as free exercise cases, and that secular humanism is a religion under this defini- tion.3 These conservative Christians argue that the religion of secular humanism is being endorsed in public school textbooks in violation of the establishment clause. Several lower federal courts have already ex- amined this issue with mixed results.
