Participants will also be contacted periodically to provide answers to questions that will inform a greater understanding of community response to the pandemic and planning for this and future events. • For questions about the study, you may contact Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda, the project’s lead investigator, or Rashida Callender at [email protected].

State Representative Mayes Middleton

• Property Taxes & Value Increases o What you owe in property taxes does not go up or down until the tax rate is adopted by each property taxing entity later this Summer. This means that, as valuations rise, tax rates should fall, which is the mechanism the legislature put in place last year by limiting property tax revenue growth (the combinations of valuation increases and/or tax rate increases) to 3.5%. However, in a year of extreme economic decline, and the fact that we all know our properties are not worth today what they were when valued at 1/1/2020, each taxing entity must adopt a rate below the “no-new-revenue” rate. The “no-new-revenue” rate is the tax rate which takes into account valuation increases and requires a tax rate cut when valuations rise, so that each taxing entity generates the same amount of taxes as the previous year from existing properties. o The Comptroller requires Central Appraisal Districts (CADs) to do property valuation studies and penalizes them if they do not comply. Protests need to be substantially completed by July 20th for the Central Appraisal District to be able to certify and use 2020 values. Using 2019 values is not totally off of the table though. o There are two very important actions you can take to help lower your tax bill. 1) First, protest your valuation increase with your County Central Appraisal District. Normally, you have until May 15, but this has been extended due to notices being mailed out late. The deadline for Galveston County is May 22nd and 30 days from when your notice was mailed for Chambers County. . Galveston County Taxpayers can go here. . Chambers County Taxpayers can go here. 2) Second, demand that each property taxing entity adopt the “no-new-revenue” rate or a lower rate. Better indicators for the negative economic impact of COVID-19 in our community will become clearer soon, but the “no-new-revenue” rate can be the baseline to cut from.

Little Red Box Grocery

• Little Red Box Grocery is all about Good Food. For All. We are reimagining the old model of grocery retail – think of us as a neighborhood bodega meets curbside pick-up, with a focus on community engagement and empowerment – in order to eradicate food deserts. • The Little Red Box was once a thing that turned into an idea. In 1898, a newly-arrived immigrant opened up Joe Lung Café on what is now Sixth Street and San Jacinto in downtown Austin. On Fridays, farm families would sell their produce and bring ‘Grandpa Joe’ money for safekeeping in his trademark 'little red box,' which he would use to lend to folks who couldn’t go to the banks, especially minorities. All was done on a handshake; he never lost a dime for his generosity. Grandpa Joe was my great grandfather, and the values exhibited in his story - kindness, equity, trust - were foundational to the idea of this version of the Little Red Box. They are our way to carry on his legacy of access. • Contact Information 905 43rd St. Galveston, TX 77550 | 713-95-8965 | Tuesdays & Fridays | 9am-6pm Sewa International
