Feuer recommends free credit report checks In a follow up to his September warning about how consumers should protect themselves follow- ing the massive Equifax data breach, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer is encouraging mem- bers of the public to obtain a free annual credit report by visiting annualcreditreport.com before the end of the year. Each of the three credit bureaus are required to provide free copies through the website once every 12 months as a result of 2003’s Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. Free credit reports from Equifax, TransUnion and Experian will give Los Angeles consumers a summary of credit histories, including payment history, inquiries made by financial institu- tions and information on the public record, such as foreclosures or bankruptcies. The website is the only one authorized by federal law to provide the information. The city attorney also warns consumers to be cautious about other websites that claim to offer free credit ports. Only annualcred- itreport.com is authorized to pro- vide the free annual credit report people are entitled to under federal law. Other websites often charge fees. After visiting annualcreditre- port.com, consumers should close their internet browser to ensure their transaction is secure and per- sonal information is not at risk. Consumers also may order their free annual credit report by calling (877)322-8228. For additional safety measures, consumers can consider placing freezes on credit reports with the three agencies to make it harder for new accounts to be opened in their name. Equifax is offering this service for free until Jan. 31. Lastly, the nationwide credit reporting companies and annual- creditreport.com will not send emails asking for personal infor- mation. If you get an email, see a pop-up ad or receive a phone call or text message from someone claiming to be from annualcred- itreport.com or any of the three nationwide credit reporting com- panies, do not reply or click on any link in the message. Instead, for- ward the information to the Federal Trade Commission by emailing [email protected]. 6 December 28, 2017 Park Labrea News/Beverly Press

Bass calls for swift action on Libyan slave trade

photo courtesy of Congresswoman Karen Bass’ office Rep. Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) introduced a resolution on Dec. 4 that condemns migrant slave auctions in Libya that were recently exposed in a CNN report. The resolution calls on the Trump administration to develop strate- gies to rapidly respond to the migrant and refugee crisis in Libya, and demands that the Libyan government conduct an investigation into the slave auctions. It also recommends that the African Union con- duct an investigation into what Bass called a human rights crisis. “Congress cannot sit idly by as news of the Libya slave trade spreads,” said Bass, the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Africa. “Slavery is a crime against humanity. This resolution calls for a comprehensive response, both domestically and internationally, to this report, which is what we’ll need going forward to take an effective stand against this tragedy.” The CNN report stated that Libyan authorities are investigating allegations about the illegal slave trade and are working to return vic- tims to their countries of origin. Bass’ bill was co-sponsored by a bipartisan coalition of 40 members of Congress. On Dec. 8, Bass and members of the Congressional Black Caucus met with Libyan Ambassador Wafa Bughaighis to discuss the issue. “We met with the ambassador out of the profound concern that in this day and age, people are being sold as property,” Bass added. “The international community must operate on the assumption that we don’t need further proof, what we need is to stop it. The ambas- sador has agreed to provide us a detailed update on the specifics of the Libyan investigation and will continue to work with us transpar- ently to respond to the migrant and refugee situation.
