P a g e 8 C a l C l u b N e w s M a y / J u n e - 2 0 1 1 2011 Toyota Review By Larry Mason Another year, another fantastic race weekend chock full of action both on and off the track. Scorching temperatures in the 90s started off Friday and Saturday, but Sunday dawned gray and cold with a misty fog apropos for a London mystery. Nevertheless, the thrill of winning this seaside event has only grown stronger over the 37 years. With the economy still suffering, it was a pleasant surprise to see 27 competitive cars on the grid. The action off the track wasn’t so pleasant as a number of people with per- haps “too much squeezin’ of the grapes” as Chick Hearn used to say, got into a brawl in front of the official souvenir stand just outside the arena/convention center. Lots of ugly yelling, screaming, punches thrown, wrestling and eventual- ly one taken away on a stretcher was not the way to celebrate an otherwise great weekend. Interestingly enough, Charles, the IZOD IndyCar Series head of securi- ty was one of the first responders on the scene. He was wearing that same wry smile as when Helio Castroneves grabbed him around the collar last year.

P a g e 1 2 G r i d L i n e s M a y / J u n e - 2 0 1 1 San Diego Region Grid Lines OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE SAN DIEGO REGION OF THE SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA, INC The Region Board Needs Your Help! During a recent meeting of the San Diego Region Board of Directors, there was dis- Legends of Riverside III cussion of how to better serve the members of the Region. As most of you know, the Board’s responsibility is to manage the affairs of the Region in the best interests of the SCCA and it’s members. These responsibilities include fiduciary governance of the Region’s finances and the administrative requirements of sponsoring various motorsports events. But the Board must consider the desires and needs of the members of the Region when making decisions. To best serve the members, we must fully understand those desires and needs. Currently, there are approximately 565 members in Region 57. While we have a strong Solo program, a few Club Race drivers and a stalwart group of Club Racing workers, a large number of our members do not participate on a regular basis. There was a small number that showed an interest in RallyCross, but that has been a difficult pro- gram to gain momentum. Certainly not having a local race track or a large expanse of dirt makes participation in these activities more difficult. Long out of town travel, a struggling economy and the onset of higher gas prices will not help that situation. However, there are other motorsport activities open to the SCCA family that won’t nec- essarily strain the budget. The Board truly needs your input to better guide the Region to pursue those other options and provide the best opportunity for each and every member to participate. The Region can’t do it all and since this is a member driven organization, your opinion and active support are crucial. As a result, the board has asked me to create a survey to “Poll the Electorate” so to speak. Some of you may be happy to sit back and read SportsCar and Grid Lines in SoPac News. But given the opportunity, many of you would Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Bobby Allison and dozens of legendary racers probably prefer to be engaged in motorsports rather than reading about it.
